This is fun listening to John talk, play, and just hang out like this. Very cool John. The internet is amazing like this. We can sit here and listen to a world class player and hang out with him, which we could have never done 15 years ago.
Hi Quail, the same can be said about you, a decade ago we couldn't so easily just open a browser and watch great guitar lessons from home so conveniently
Quail Studios Guitar I had to read books on guitar chords back in the day.Now I can very easily watch great guitar players show me techniques without looking for a book about it.
He seems like hes still that same kid that set in his room jamming to records. I miss those days. As a kid setting on the edge of my bed trying to learn The Beatles
10:00 jam using major 3rds with backbeat 12:25 jam with thirds 15:40 walking bass 16:58 bass jam 20:20 major over minor jam (very nice!) 35:00 gospel type groove
If you just grab your guitar and actually jam along with him, for a few minutes at a time there, it does seem like it is just you and him playing. And that is very cool.
i have learned SO MANY LICKS from these live shows its ridiculous. i've been playing guitar for 15 years and in the past year he's been doing these i have to have learned twice as many licks as ive learned in 14 years...this guy is a guitar dictionary!
Conrad I would say he is 'obsessed' with music, thats why he is so good! Just listen and appreciate him sharing his amazing chops, how can anybody not be inspired listening to this!? As for his character/personality traits, i accept what i see right in front of me on the video. Personally i think he is an intelligent, interesting and likeable person who i would make time to listen to, seeing that i like his music and really admire his tasteful playing. At least we get to make our own decision of judgement by what we see direct on this media platform rather than the bullshit picture the 'obsessed' mainstream media tries to paint him! He is one of the best musician/songwriters of this generation! Appreciate and enjoy him in this unadulterated, pure artistic platform!
This is some of the most beautiful, skillful guitar I've ever heard in my life . This video has so much information in it, it's crazy. John's a master.
As an acoustic player, an intermediate one at best, I find it fascinating the freedom the bending provides. It seems a sleppery slope for a novice like me because whenever I try to bend my results are mixed. This deep understanding that he can instantly transcribe and execute physically...its such a rare gift. Mix that with creativity, the ability to sing, oversized hands that incorporate the thumb with ease...a rare talent. Thanks John!
Always experimenting, love it. John is a fucking great role model to have as a guitar player. So blessed he does these kind of interactions on instagram.
So far starting at 16:31 is my favorite part. Sooo cool. John starts to really get into his playing here. He just get's lost in the music that he's creating. Such good concepts that he's talking about. I'm still not though the video.
I can’t believe this has so few views, you are an icon and it’s so cool for you to take this amount of time just to give back to your fans. Thanks, Matt
17:00 I still remember that bit when he adds the baseline even 6 years later lmao. And also 24:55 is engraved in my brain. not only the guitar part but the "learn to hear what chords" - even though he messes up a little bit - phrasing and tone are absolutely incredible. I come back to this video every now and then :D
What's all this talk about you making a 'comeback'? Musicians (and people) like you never have to worry about a comeback because you are as 'back' as you decide to be! I'm 68 and I listen to, enjoy, and admire your work almost daily. Keep writing and playing from that good heart, John.
Thanks bro all the way from New Zealand.. love watching, learning and taking inspiration from what you're laying down... showing the human aspect of being a guitarist... I remember not getting to the party and jamming in my room...
I've never had a guitar with a whammy bar, but... I love John's perspective here. 15:28 Bass lines while playing... cool. I was going to click out but then this came up.
Definitely a chill relaxed guy. Pretty cool he inspired me to get into guitar a few years ago, and have learned (not mastered) some of his songs. What is neat is that he owned a house in Montana near Bozeman or Yellowstone Montana which is the state where I was born. Much respect for Mr. Mayer, and his passion for music is inspiring. You da man brotha.
nice vid JM, youve come a long way since HS days and body is a wonderland! :) you should do non-live lessons with specific topics...you're a really good teacher and it's fun to watch you play b/c of how much fun you're having. thx again!
I love that he’s always been a guitarist’s guitar player. I’m so happy he’s playing with The Dead and found an audience that has a love for music as much as his own.
This is great John thanks! l love your guitar playing...you're a natural teacher too. Your tips and tricks have really boosted my Tuba playing. Thanks Again! Ok, I'm kidding I actually play the guitar.
You can always tell a real player. A real player could give a shit about who they are. They are into the sound they are making and the folks that guided them there. Well done. Seriously impressed with all of it. Chops and attitude. I got to jam with Doyle once upon a time long, long ago. He was killer then too.
Thanks for turning me on to Doyle Bramhall and thanks for the lesson I love it when people that have made it take time for there peeps and ty keep do this for the fans plz
The other thing that is really cool is that he is a virtuoso, but so in love with creating - these days there are so few who know how to do this. Nurture the kids!
I feel so bad at playing the guitar now 😩. Whatever, it is super nice to have someone this good giving lessons ... even though I doubt I can fully understand how he's doing that with wood and strings.
Tbh, I'm not the biggest fan of John Mayer, but this video was way cool. It's always great to see what other guitarists are doing and try to integrate their styles into yours.
New Guitar Lesson From John Mayer || 4 February 2018
th-cam.com/video/WBAN_nsriT8/w-d-xo.html
I used to think Mayer was a douchebag. After watching these videos of him just chilling, I have completely changed my mind. He is cool as fuck.
As a big fan of John, he was one but he got a lot better as he aged haha
As a fan of his for a few years, He was a douchebag lol
This is fun listening to John talk, play, and just hang out like this. Very cool John. The internet is amazing like this. We can sit here and listen to a world class player and hang out with him, which we could have never done 15 years ago.
Hi Quail, the same can be said about you, a decade ago we couldn't so easily just open a browser and watch great guitar lessons from home so conveniently
Quail Studios Guitar I agree. This is one of the few things about the internet that I genuinely enjoy
Quail Studios Guitar I had to read books on guitar chords back in the day.Now I can very easily watch great guitar players show me techniques without looking for a book about it.
thats called globalisation
Agreed, sharing this experience wouldn't be possible without TH-cam!
Damn, I wish I could literally just chill with a guitar in my hands and bust out the jams this master does. Mayer is a legend.
17:55 just leaving this here as a bookmark since I can’t find the original video of this, my god that’s a fucking tasty jam.
im watching this for the first time in a while and was like "damn i wonder which part that sick jam he does is at" and then saw this comment lol
Dude gets so much enjoyment just playing guitar by himself... that's how it's supposed to be
He seems like hes still that same kid that set in his room jamming to records.
I miss those days. As a kid setting on the edge of my bed trying to learn The Beatles
It’s the fountain of youth... just watch Keith Richards play guitar in interviews
Hahah he looks like a kid.
10:00 jam using major 3rds with backbeat
12:25 jam with thirds
15:40 walking bass
16:58 bass jam
20:20 major over minor jam (very nice!)
35:00 gospel type groove
Wish he would make a blues album, he's so good at blues!
John Mayor Trio has some good blues on it
Live in La has some blues on it
He has … it’s called continuum
John Mayer trio album is on Spotify! It’s a blues trio! That was his ‘blues album’ and he described it as such too. Enjoy :) it’s fantastic
If you just grab your guitar and actually jam along with him, for a few minutes at a time there, it does seem like it is just you and him playing. And that is very cool.
Sean Marshall hey buddy how do I view his live videos on Instagram?
i have learned SO MANY LICKS from these live shows its ridiculous. i've been playing guitar for 15 years and in the past year he's been doing these i have to have learned twice as many licks as ive learned in 14 years...this guy is a guitar dictionary!
Sean Marshall dream come true
Such a cool and humble dude for taking time out to talk guitar with fans! Top class! Thanks.
Nicky B lol hes just obsessed with himself
Conrad
I would say he is 'obsessed' with music, thats why he is so good! Just listen and appreciate him sharing his amazing chops, how can anybody not be inspired listening to this!?

who cares? the guy can play the damn guitar!
Conrad he’s self-indulgent, not self-obsessive.. huge difference, do you know it?
You can tell he's much of an introvert by being extremely happy just him and his guitar and I can relate lol
What a treat. Having one of the greatest taking time to interact with his fans sharing knowledge. Thanks John.
This is some of the most beautiful, skillful guitar I've ever heard in my life . This video has so much information in it, it's crazy. John's a master.
John jamming alone in a room, we need more of this in the world.
Just him and a bag of cocaine
As an acoustic player, an intermediate one at best, I find it fascinating the freedom the bending provides. It seems a sleppery slope for a novice like me because whenever I try to bend my results are mixed. This deep understanding that he can instantly transcribe and execute physically...its such a rare gift. He keeps getting better and better. Great playing!
He is better
Damn! What an major understanding of the guitar. I have been playing for years and can touch it!
I missed it ! John Mayer Instagram live are the party 😂
john is such a good teacher, guitar player and good singer&song writer. that makes him a great musician
Always experimenting, love it. John is a fucking great role model to have as a guitar player.
So blessed he does these kind of interactions on instagram.
Many thanks for recording these for us. So fun to watch him enjoying his playing!
John Mayer is like the only present time artist still jamming the blues, they're so beautiful and an art that's not as popular as it once was.
Nice profile picture.👍🎸
likewise my friend....
Gary Clark!
I don't play guitar but I love listening to him speak and play.
So far starting at 16:31 is my favorite part. Sooo cool. John starts to really get into his playing here. He just get's lost in the music that he's creating. Such good concepts that he's talking about. I'm still not though the video.
John has to do a master series ... hes one of the few unbelievable players that can articulate the nuances
John Mayer is where melody and rhythm meet. Super cool
thanks guitar music pro for the 8 ads!
You can tell this is all he loves so much passion! Gotta respect it !
It's always fun to watch your instagram live video john.
Hope to meet you one day John, your playing is phenomenal sir. Thank you for this great teaching on guitar, the best instrument in the universe.
First time I watch a 41 minutes video without being bored to death. Thank you John. :-)
This guy loves the sounds he creates! It’s awesome to see his joy in making his guitar do what he wants it to do.
People always freak out when I say JM is my favorite guitar player... this is why!!
Robert T. Vannatta the people who freak won’t know what they’re missing out on!
I can’t believe this has so few views, you are an icon and it’s so cool for you to take this amount of time just to give back to your fans. Thanks, Matt
He has some of the best feel and rhythm I’ve ever seen. Amazing
John Mayer Gives Guitar Lessons to his fans Instagram Live Stream thank you for doing this.
John "the inspiration" Mayer...great jamming!
Man same for me, these moments were transforming for my guitar understanding
Man, he is fluent in guitar!!
What's all this talk about you making a 'comeback'? Musicians (and people) like you never have to worry about a comeback because you are as 'back' as you decide to be! I'm 68 and I listen to, enjoy, and admire your work almost daily. Keep writing and playing from that good heart, John.
Thank you for taking the time to share this with us!
Priceless..Thanks dude, really..
32 mnt.... That's Mr Mayer... That's true Mr Mayer and we love you for that. Thank you for the upload.
This is why pedal steel is so cool.... it's a ton of control on stretching or releasing tension on specific strings at specific intervals.
Thanks bro all the way from New Zealand.. love watching, learning and taking inspiration from what you're laying down... showing the human aspect of being a guitarist... I remember not getting to the party and jamming in my room...
"I'll play it super rudementary..." proceeds to destroy the fretboard...
he is a great player never really listened to his music but i can tell this guy can play man!
Great stuff John, please keep these vids coming! Perhaps you could write a tune and a solo ON THE SPOT for us, what a lesson that would be! 😃
Thanks John Just amazing.

Mr Passionate Musical Genius....👍

Camp High... JM is the coolest, well at least the nerdiest, one man band Guitar God of this Millennium
Love to hear John talk guitar, but he just plays with such feeling, he is just Awesome.
A treasure trove of ideas and inspiration. Thank you!
This dude has a weird way of playing the bass with his thumb and i love it
I love the way u teach music, surprisingly it's fun actually

You can always tell a real player. A real player could give a shit about who they are. They are into the sound they are making and the folks that guided them there. Well done. Seriously impressed with all of it. Chops and attitude. I got to jam with Doyle once upon a time long, long ago. He was killer then too.
Would love to meet you . Although i am an old man now but followed you since i first saw you play with E.C. Great lesson Thanks..

Some people just need to talk to things/people! I've never been that person but I do admire it. John seems like a generous person!

I feel so bad at playing the guitar now 😩. Whatever, it is super nice to have someone this good giving lessons ... even though I doubt I can fully understand how he's doing that with wood and strings.
