First of all let me say that i am like John in one way.....i love strats, particularly of the Fender variety. My picture next to my comment is my strat. I love the old guitars, love them! I'm a "3 our of 5 guy myself", same three too. Don't even care how good the other two are - I'm sticking to those three. Probably the only guitar playing thing I have in common with this amazing player. I have a tele for a great bridge sound and the middle doesn't matter to me...
Seriously. Watching him play you never know what to pay attention to. His right hand is just as or more important than his left. Especially when he gets on those bluesy runs playing the rhythm with his thumb and little lead licks with his index.
I wouldn't say invented. It's not that unusual of a technique, but the way he uses it is different from most other players. He always admits using techniques from other players. It's what all guitarists do. We take what we like from different guitarists and kind of do our own thing with it. John just a lot more succesful than most of us. And he chooses *not* to use half of his skills in a song, only serving the song. That is probably his biggest skill, most of us can't hold back as well.
It's a really nicely made guitar. It feels solid & every knob, switch & tuner works smoothly. It might attract some people to a strat like guitar who would have typically played a PRS fixed neck custom 22s or 24s.

Crazy almost like that has more to do than the style or make.
Congrats bro
I played one at Sam ash here in Georgia. I was really really impressed , the playability and quality blew me away. I couldn’t afford it at the time. But now that they have come down a bit. I might be able to get one soon. I didn’t want to put it down. Iv played about 60 yrs. Well done PRS. I highly recommend this guitar.😊
watching john play the blues at the end here was really awesome bc a couple of guitar techniques and licks just really clicked with me
Hands down the best guitar I own or have played. Love my Fender, but the silver sky is just as John describes. Butter...every time
I like how the guitar is carefully specked out for John and not just a strat with his name on it.
90 percent is your soul. The guitar is the conduit. Bringing you to us. To me .♥️🎼
I have owned multiple Stratocasters and I bought a Silver Sky this past summer. It is definitely different from a Strat, but in a MAGNIFICENT way. It is a VERY inspiring instrument.
I want to hate John Mayer....but I can't. He's just too good. Damn you John!!!
Modernising a strat is a great idea. Like a modern 7.5” radius and modern pickups that don’t sound like their aged over 50 years, the input dish, that can go too because we’re modernising
First of all let me say that i am like John in one way.....i love strats, particularly of the Fender variety. My picture next to my comment is my strat. I love the old guitars, love them! Leo was a genius period. Paul and John have a lot of respect for everything that has come before. John explains his thought process very well here. And Paul makes great guitars. I see how this works. You may not like John's guitar playing, his music, or him. Fine. It's America. You can have an opinion. All of the hate directed at John, Paul, and this guitar is ridiculous. But that is also what we have become because of social media. I think John and Paul are good collaborators and they have done something interesting here. I still haven't played a Silver Sky but i want to. I want to see for myself what the deal is. I personally think John is one of the best artists around. His songs are great and his guitar playing is out of this world. I think he is on to something here and i can't wait to see what is next.
STFU
rdmkeytohwy Thank you!
he's playing BBKing in the middle pick-up position but the index finger vibrato is pure Eric Clapton!
Which makes him unoriginal
g berry you sound jealous
@@GeriDoc8 yeah HOW DARE he take INSPIRATION from some of the all time great guitar players! Totally NO ONE has ever took any inspiration from anywhere!
Ffs you boomers need to get off the internet.
I recently bought one. Possibly the best of my 40 guitar collection.
Literally 5 seconds in and I know I'm staying for the whole video
I wonder if he'll copyright strike himself?
John himself isn't the one enforcing the copyrights; it's the record label..
Brendan k
He can retire off of bankruptcy.
@Jon Oz even a damn hum? Jesus, that is just absurd
Copyrighting blues music is just absurd. Everyone plays everyone's stuff and puts their own licks in it or interpretations. Hendrix played muddy waters and Vaughn played Hendrix etc etc. What a joke TH-cam is becoming
John lived a hard life on a plantation in Mississippi where he developed his style of blues.
Are you supposed to be black?
Yoosh the only explanation for those tragically filthy tones
@@Twinky946 tragically overrated
@@marsantos81 "tragically overrated" could you be a blues and elaborate on this?
@@MarsLonsen yeah, he'll be considered to be one of the best guitarist of all time because he's a good looking pop star and that Rolling Stone said so. What grown man listens to John Mayer seriously? Otherwise he's a pretty good player.
JM, one of the best guitar players ever. The Silver Sky is a great instrument, with all the bells and whistles you would ever need. I only wish PRS would make a telecaster next.
Your wish will be granted soon.
This aged well
Ha this aged well
I'm a "3 our of 5 guy myself", same three too. Don't even care how good the other two are - I'm sticking to those three. Probably the only guitar playing thing I have in common with this amazing player. I have a tele for a great bridge sound and the middle doesn't matter to me...
1:05 "I just don't know what I was going to play"
Plays something that's better than anything I'll ever play
JM: “I’m gonna have to buy it, I don’t know if I’ll be able to borrow it”
Also JM: *can play a guitar at a show and sell it for way more than he paid*
One of a kind finger technique. Seriously, you can see he invented his own style!
All Things Guitar yes!!
Seriously. Watching him play you never know what to pay attention to. His right hand is just as or more important than his left. Especially when he gets on those bluesy runs playing the rhythm with his thumb and little lead licks with his index.
His right hand technique is the staple finger picking blues. Mark Knopfler style
yea but Mark Knopfler only uses it for soloing. The extend John does it is extraordinary @@MM-vs2et
That is probably his biggest skill, most of us can't hold back as well.
plot twist: They get sued by Gibson.
Bruh 😂😂
But they won against gibson.
Oh god 😂😂
I guess it does look like an sg in a smokey bar ( this was an actual argument they made about the prs single cut looking like a les paul)
@@b00neDawg00 They sued em cause the singlecut it kinda looked a like a les paul.
Fantastic discussion & expression John, you sold me!
The thought process behind a musical genius.
Sheesh... John's selling me on this guitar, and I'm a bass player.
Tom Quail is that you?
It's a really nicely made guitar. It feels solid & every knob, switch & tuner works smoothly. It might attract some people to a strat like guitar who would have typically played a PRS fixed neck custom 22s or 24s.

Fender: Am i a joke to you?
JM: I'm gonna find another youu
Looks like such a great instrument. I do think though that an HSS option would be better. And if I'm going to drop 2k on a guitar, I want a sexier finish.
Dude I didn’t care much for this guitar UNTIL I played it. After I played it, I want one so damn bad now man that guitar is insane
That has to be one of the best and i mean BEST articulations about a PRS product i have watched....i have admired the SK from a distance but love all the PRS guitars i own....i really want to try one , own one
"I like pulling colors from modern references"
-lest play the black one
I was thinking he meant musical colors. Like the color of the notes based not just on the note, but the warmth.
@@mtg6792 John said the first 5 colors are Tesla colors so I’m pretty sure he was referring to the body of the guitar
John @ 5:27 “Eh, I guess that lick will do.” 😂🤣😂
He is a god he is the reason I started playing guitar
6:48 🤯🤯🤯🤯 I did the same thing! My sister had an old high end each stereo with a 31 band EQ, and I always ended up setting it like a V. That is why I am obsessed with his tone. I like full fat lows and clear high. With subtle mids. Only push low-mids to cut through on leads, with my Klon and/or JHS Moonshine(best Tubescreamer ever, retains lows). Dude, Mayer is my tone mate.
As a player, I've always hated hearing other players talk gear. But.... I can listen to Mayer talk and piddle all day.
6:15
just messing around with a rye smile
that bastard lol
There’s just something weird seeing him without a strat. Like slash playing a tele....
It’s just business
“I only play this right half of the time” *proceeds to play flawlessly the first try
He will always be known for his strat sound which has had it’s own sound forever (which I love), but he’s obviously convinced himself otherwise! It will be interesting if he sticks with it!
I always changed the eq as a kid on everyone's radios. It's funny he mentions that because I never thought about it until now. As a fender guy, I'm wanting a PRS more and more.
I’m a strat player aaaanndd.... I want this 😳
When is the SE version coming out?
Wondering if there's a (god forbid) a hard tail version? Love the headstock, good bye string trees.
its pretty much hard tail. It comes set up up with the trem set very hard back to the body, almost unusable.
I heard that too. Still like to see a true hardtail version though.
Jonny Gardiner - I think that's cheating, because overcoming the boingy quality of a floating vibrato Strat is what qualifies a great example of a guitar or great setup.
@@j_freed Maybe cheating, but still to Mayer's spec.
John is so so right. It's 90% about the strings. My Ibanez Strat knockoff strings feel so good to me I never want to play anything else.
One of the best guitarist of our generation you are in a category of legends Clapton Hendrix Harrison King Moore the list goes on I'm adding John to this list
