    Personally Mojaxx, I prefer that you don't rush to get a video out on these pieces of hardware. Too many times I look up a video about a piece of kit I'm interested in, and just end up watching 10 vids that say exactly the same thing... which usually just ends up being a round-the-houses convoluted way of saying all the stuff you could read on the back of the box - because the reviewer hasn't actually had any time to learn anything about the gear at all.
    Thank you for caring enough to tell people stuff that is actually relevent. Keep up the good work!

      tombyrnerocks I concur. I was waiting on this review from him. I know a few djs that own these. This review is spot on with the live performances of those djs.

    I remember the days when I had to take nearly 20 trips into the place I was playing at. Turntables one at a time. Mixer, speakers and then like 10 crates of records. I just got out of DJing when the Serato was first coming out. I went to my buddies place and he had a set up and it absolutely blew my mind.

  • @PaulieSirisant

    Been using these for two months - For scratching, it is everything you expect. Real turntable feel. For mixing, its not 100% there, I dont think they've nailed the pitch control feel and the platter speed to be exactly like Turntables

      viirusone but those pale in comparison to the Rane 12. This tech is far more advanced. I think if Numark come out with an affordable 12" platter controller, it should outperform the Ns7iii bc of the new tech. Serato is the most popular software on the market right now...... I'd be interested

    • @viirusone
      @viirusone 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a given, 2004 tech vs 2018. I was putting it out there it's not a new concept, it's been done before. BTW inMusic own's Rane & Numark.

      I still own a V7 and it was a killer piece of kit but the resolution wasn't good enough. 3600 ticks on the Rane 12? I don't know the exact number on the V7 but I could never get real precise on the cuts with it.

  • @househeadspeakz

    That's the same here in the US. The big major clubs may still have turntables for vinyl but I don't see them spending any money for new turntables. The club standard are CJDs with a mixer. I'm a House DJ and I don't see anyone spending that kind of coin.

  • @johnparker8270
    @johnparker8270 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Like I said in a previous vid I would love these to be a new club standard but I'm inclined to agree with your view regarding cdj's especially with the new denons on the scene. Still they're still a nice option to have and will probably do well in the USA and Japan where hip hop is prevalent 🙂

  • @jeffmukai
    @jeffmukai 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Though CDJs are extremely standard, turntables are still a standard in many clubs up and down the west coast of the US. I'm in Seattle where every bar and club that provides equipment has either turntables only, or both turntables and CDJs. RANE will sell a lot of these.

    The final iteration of this should be a controller that also has a traditional needle. You should be able to use real vinyl or it as a modern controller. Why not both?

  • @ABetterSound
    @ABetterSound 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I never liked CDJ, so the only option was Technics turntables or midi controller. Tried both and now, it was time to upgrade and this was a no brainer. Phase is still buggy (to this date 9/9/2019) and I don't want to replace batteries or calibrate anything. An accelerometer will drift over time and they have no official Serato support.

    The market for these are people that use serato and use a controller that is getting long in the tooth. These folks also don't want to deal with the expense of replacing needles or purchasing an sl4.

    Great review! I def found it disappointing that there were no marking in the position where the needIe would normally be. But personally i have no problem understanding who these are for. I believe Rane calls these "battle controllers". I think they are very much targeted at scratch dj's - it seems that most of those are using Serato anyways and zero needle skipping, record wear, needle wear etc. really makes sense. Plus the real vinyl feel is absolutely key obviously. I haven't gotten my set of the white acrylic discs yet - my only concern would be that somehow your skills would not transfer as well when you find yourself in front of real turn tables..

  • @WhiteWulfe
    @WhiteWulfe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've been contemplating switching my at home "mess around and have fun" setup to these when they were first announced, and still might, but.... Ouch, hearing that they've swapped out a record to an acrylic disc (and worse, a mostly white one at that) but haven't bothered to update the pictures of the unit on their website... Glad to hear they're pretty much just like turntables though.
    Only reason I don't like using DVS with my STR8-150's is truth be told, Native Instruments mk II control records have a horrible banshee wail through your cartridges, and others in the room not wearing headphones typically aren't happy about that noise...

    Recessed connectors are key. This is a BIG mistake! Also, there was no reason why the pitch fader couldn't be in a traditional position since there is no tonearm anyway. Otherwise, making these 9" or 10" would've made more sense for portability and these would've been perfect.

    • @TysonHook-22-

      Its a tough call, depends on your end game. Do you plan to strickly be a digital DJ meaning serato or whatever and have little to no desire to collect and acquire real vinyl records? if so the rane 12s is an excellant investment.
      But if you think you'll someday get into the passion of vinyl collecting your gonna be best off investing in a good high end DJ set from the start over a digital/controller player.
      Honestly I would suggest the tradional record player in most cases... vinyl has stuck around for a reason, its simply an enjoyable experience to listen to are you gonna listen to all your music on vinyl... not at all as its a chore compare to the ease of click and play digital music but the option to toss on a vinyl record sit back and relax is a nice option to have even if you only rarely take advantage of it... Myself I dont listen to vinyl as much as I use to but its always an enjoyable experience when I do.
      bottom line is that any turntable can become a digital controller with add ons like serato or phase DJ but theres no digital controller that plays vinyl or could be converted to play vinyl down the road if thats something you want to do later on. but honestly if thats something you decide you want to do later on you can always pick up a dedicated set for vinyl playback like something made by pro-ject
      if I were just starting out didnt collect any vinyl or plan to in the near future and just wanted a DJ set for mixing and scratching the rane 12s are quite awesome
      as the industry is becoming more and mroe digital based with controllers and devices like phase DJ your not losing much going with the 12s over a tradional set imo. but one must seriously consider if youl'l ever dive into vinyl collecting in the future if theres at all a chance youll become a vinyl audiophile type getting a tradional turn table from the start will save you some anger in the future...but again oppisite could be said if you plan to stay in the digital world of things then you may save yourself a headache in the future going with the 12s off the get go.

    I really wish Rane offered this product in a traditional, non battle style layout. House music DJs would love to use this product, but the pitch control is in a horrible position for house music DJs. Very encouraged by this product, though! I used them as they are. I generally have my TTS in a battle configuration anyway. The really should have recessed the plugs to accomodate. That and the USB hub built in are massive oversights imo

    13:20 is the point… thats the main problem its not open for other systems, so no chance to get club standard … you can be happy if they have some tt in clubs today and than it makes much more sense to use real vinyl or go with phase ...
    i don' t understand this cdj thing in clubs… every dj want the tt back, talk about the lost art of real mixing, the warmer better sound of vinyl and the industry produce new tt decks - but…
    maybe a smaller 10,7" disc , portable and open for all systems would make sense but this twelves are more an exotic, deluxe super expensive home solution ....

      It’s all in personal preference Rocky if you love your needles and putting the tone arm on the record then stick with the traditional turntable if you rather have better portability not have to worry about needles or a tone arm skip proof vibration proof almost like a CDJ and still have that traditional feel then go with the Rane 12’s!

    Are you able to midi map the buttons through serato on the twelve to map for pitch bending? Does the BPM show and move instantly in serato program? Was wondering if there was sorta a lag read out in BPM like using dvs.

    • @Mojaxx
      @Mojaxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doeun Meas No remapping for ‘accessories’ in Serato still. Response to the pitch is definitely quicker than with DVS because it’s sending info direct from the slider. But it’s not a huge difference in real life.

      +mikelo303 I wouldn't say that it's a stupid product. Without the knowledge of Phase when it was in development years ago, it sounds like a promising bit of gear. It just had the unfortunate window of release to be right before a new revolutionary product.
      That being said, it still has something that Phase doesn't, at least for right now:
      native Serato interface integration. Gotta have those extra audio cables :P It's gunna roll the scene back to the days of SL boxes :P
      That being said... SL box interfaces are totally worth it for Phase...

    • @DJSkunkieButt
      @DJSkunkieButt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +DJ YZ Wireless signals shouldn't be much of a problem at all, since they're so close together. Signal should not get interrupted.
      Battery wise, I can totally understand. But that'd be fine if you maintain a strict routine on chucking them on the charger after every gig.
      Plus... you can always just haul around some control vinyl and cartridges as a backup!

    • @djmiyagi1950
      @djmiyagi1950 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yup something else to carry around and hook up to the mixer like an old SL box. Plus your batteries could die mid set if you forget to charge the units. No thanks. I'll stick to regular needles on my 1200s and get some Twelves before Phase.

      I've used em and they felt just like a 1200. the response was pretty amazing TBH. My concern with Phase is the RF. It will all depend on the freq they use and how and if thats available and legal to use that freq in your region.

    I don't know what Rane was doing here, either... They should have put a tone arm on these, and a sound card inside. Would have been much more versatile, appealed to a much wider audience, and even justified the ridiculous price tag.

    I wish the consumer had the choice of running serato not the manufacturer telling us and that we have to use that specific mixer. I hope when Rane releases there upgrade it is more like actual 12 where you connect using phono lines not usb and that it comes with flash drive for those that just pop in our memory stick and are off!! And no need to be in battle mode i think it kinda defeats the purpose djs set up their 12s like that so the S Arm does not get in the way when battling. Put the. 12 like a 12 with start stop on the left your pitch on the right and some hot cues are cool in the back and what would really set off the New Updated Version of the Rane 12 would be to some how some way to install a TOUCH SCREEN!! that..would..be Awesome!!! Im sure every cdj dj would lose their minds!! That is a suggestion and would be a great suggestion. To recap: no having to use Serato or Traktor for that matter. No having to use only one specific mixer. Let the dj choose his set up if we are spending the money. Add flash drive to the 12. Put back the original set up no need to be in battle mode if there is no S Arm to get in the way and last but not least add a touch screen to the 12

    The problem is the high price. With no tone arm or on board audio, It makes no sense for these to cost up there with premium turntables with all the bells n whistles. Not sure why this guy thinks 800 is a good price.
