- In this video, I will share with you the most tax-efficient way to invest in the S&P 500 ETFs if you live outside of the US. I will also compare 11 S&P 500 ETFs domiciled in US and Ireland, and share with you the key terminologies and information that you should know when it comes to this. The Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) is an index of the 500 biggest companies in the United States by market capitalization trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ. Its largest components by weight are mega-cap stocks such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Facebook (FB), Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), Tesla (TSLA) and many more.
If you are living in a country that does not have a tax treaty with the US, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will impose a withholding tax of 30 per cent on any US-domiciled ETF or stock that pays a dividend. This will even apply if the underlying securities in the fund, such as company stocks, are based outside the US. On top of that, the US imposes a 40% estate tax rate on US assets above a $60,000 exemption threshold on assets of the deceased nonresidents.
Ideally, to avoid such hefty taxes, you should stick to ETFs that are domiciled in Europe, especially those that have UCITS (Undertakings for the Collective Investment in Transferable Securities) in their name. UCITS is a cross-European regulatory framework for mutual funds, and having them ensures that they should be safe and well regulated. This applies to funds domiciled in EU countries, including Luxembourg and Ireland.

This is the best video about s&p 500 etf! I live in Italy and I've both (csspx and vuaa), my strategy is to buy every month (the same day) 1 unit of CSPX and when the index is lower than the month before, I also buy some vuaa units, the amount depends on how strong the correction was

Back to your question, there will be 2 answers, a short one and a long one since i dont know what are your preferences.
Short answer, IBKR, cheaper, executes faster, lower minimum threshold.
Long answer, if you have a large capital to begin, and you prefer to have better customer support, then Saxo would be a better choice since IBKR customer support may not be the best.
I personally know a friend that switched from Saxo to IBKR and never looked back.

Hi there, from what I see here (taxsummaries.pwc.com/united-states/corporate/withholding-taxes) the effective dividend WHT for Swiss residents is 15% thanks to the Treaty, I suppose you can go for US-domiciled funds directly (though do double-check since I am not familiar with the taxation in Switzerland)!

Re your question, hmmm, if you are not on ireland tax treaty list - your country might be in a tax treaty with the US (maybe you can check on that), but there are some countries that does not have any tax treaty with both of them as well so I don't rule out that possibility!

I've been watching your videos for awhile and I really want to thank you for putting difficult to understand concepts and making it easy to understand for beginners like myself on how to invest! I'm on IBKR now and I would like to ask if its possible to buy fractional shares for CSPX for LSE? I tried buying but the system said that I'll need to activate Fractional Quantity in my settings, but after looking at the settings I could only buy fractional shares in the US. @@meh7084 I don't think there's Ireland domiciled alternative to VTI (at least that I am aware of).

QQQ should be CSNDX, traded on Swiss Exchange, but domiciled in Ireland.

thanks for the video! Started with DCA 2k SGD CSPX last year...but its getting more and more expensive with more and more cash sitting around doing nothing in IBKR account. not that DCA friendly anymore. Think I will switch to VUAA starting from from Jan this year all the way.

Would you mind clarifying something for me please? Why is there a huge difference in unit price between the CSPX and the VUAA for example? I mean how can there be such a difference when they are essentially tracking the same index? Same for the CSP1 - unit price of GBP30266!!! vs the CSPX priced at USD415.55. I just cannot understand this.

1. For Unit Price VUAA vs CSPX - the difference can be simply explained by the number of outstanding shares issued by the fund (ETF) to the public float. Know that share price = company value divided by number of outstanding shares, this just means VUAA issues more shares to the public such that it is cheaper per unit price - fundamentally there is little to no difference to them! (Can refer Berkshire Hathaway A share priced at a astronomical 400k+/share, or read up on why AAPL split their shares 5 times in the past)

One question i’m going to throw out here: i understand the dividend tax difference thanks to those Irish based US ETFs. But shouldn’t each individual research what are tax treaties between our own countries and Ireland as well? What if Ireland has no tax treaty with my country? I see no information about this anywhere, i’m afraid to get only 15% tax on dividend but maybe additional tax on profit. Or Ireland never has tax on capital gain, no matter the country? Thanks 😊
