Did you know that the recycling center you've walked past has actually been an RAF airfield? The runways -or what's left of them- can still be seen on satellite maps. During WW2, the airfield was used, among other things, for the RAF Coastal Command. They've operated Bristol Beaufighter airplanes, hence the name 'Beaufighter Road' surrounding the property. You’d never know the six month split in some of the video existed, as that is indeed a typical day here! 😉 Bit of local knowledge for you if you are ever back - Fochabers station does still exist. The bus stop you filmed at, there is a long building at the top of the embankment about 2-3 houses north of where you were standing. That is the station building. Now a private residence. It is built in the style of the Highland railway. It closed to passengers in the 1930’s but goods service ended in 1966. The track was on the other side of the building. The recycling centre is built on part of the site of RAF Dallachy, which was a short lived, but important air base during the Second World War for shipping strikes using Beaufighters and Mosquitos. Thanks for the extra info, that's some great local knowledge, although I'm now kind of annoyed with myself for missing the station at Fochabers, and apparently there's a ruined control tower at RAF Dallachy which is still standing and might have been worth a look. I'll have to check them out next time... :)
The Tim Traveller there is indeed a ruined control tower, but last time I was there, access into the tower was not possible. If you look on Google Maps using the satellite view, you can see how much of the runways and taxiways still exist. Plus, you can see the station building at Fochabers! The Spey railway viaduct was so long as the Spey regularly changes course. The line there started at Elgin East railway station (still there and used as offices. The booking hall is still there and in original condition) and looped up the coast before rejoining the main line to the east of Keith. The Speyside Railway junction at Craigellachie went to Dufftown, then onto Keith and the Inverness - Aberdeen mainline, and the other junction leg went to Elgin East through Rothes, passing quite a few distilleries. If you research Craigellachie Station, the pictures will show you a substantial railway junction; hard to believe when you visit the wooded park that is there now. Most of the Elgin - Craigellachie platform are covered over by the A95 re-alignment. The Speyside Line wasn’t just used for whisky, but also taking in the vast amounts of barley and the casks for the whisky. Also, up until the 1960’s the vast majority of distilleries used coal to fire the stills, which would arrive by train. The last coal fired distillery in Scotland was converted to steam in 2005. If passing through Aberlour again, go to the Mash Tun, which is the former station hotel. Local legend is that it will return to its name of the Station Hotel if a train returns to Aberlour. The Highlander Hotel in Craigellachie as well is worth a visit. Both hotels have an amazing whisky collection. There is also a long distance railway walk called the Dava Way, crossing Dava Moor between Grantown-on-Spey and Forres. It about 30’miles and is not as easily travelled as the Speyside way. Look on the internet to see some of the snow drifts they used to get. Trains had to carry blankets in winter as getting stuck wasn’t unusual. Sorry for boring you, but hopefully the extra knowledge will make your return more enjoyable when you see what was there and enjoy some of the area’s liquid produce! 😉

After watching this video series I finally understand what my Grandpa meant when he said Scotland was the most beautiful place he had ever seen on Earth. He was there during WWII and always wanted to go back with my Grandma, but sadly never made it. (My family is from Michigan, so its not exactly an easy trip to make.)

Haha thanks Steroumel, there is actually a dark secret about the finishing line... we couldn't find it! When we arrived in Buckie in the summer, we googled it and looked on the map but no luck. So in the end we just celebrated in the pub. But then when I went back on my own in the winter I googled it again and this time I found it straight away. So I'm the only one who actually technically finished the trail. Frances didn't speak to me for 3 days.

Really enjoyed this series, I'm kinda curious how many people would've commented on the winter footage if it wasn't brought up and just assumed that was the normal weather fluctuation. Bit disappointed though that the giant caterpillar becomes a nice pretty moth and not some end of the world monster.
Interesting. Last year I spent the night in Boat of Garten. Had i known of this abandoned railway line, I would have take a look. Alas I can't walk that good anymore, so it would have been just a look, but I didn't know. Nice river, the Spey, but apart from the breweries and the Salmon, not much to do. I was mainly in Scotland for the castles. Maybe you could do a series about those. I had only seen about 6 of the better known. Thanks for your wonderful videos. BTW, I'm from the Netherlands.
That trail is pretty cool. You should check out some of the rail trails we have down here in Australia. If you ever do some, I offer myself as a free guide for them. Which means I'd just like to hike the ones I've done again without doing it alone 😅 OK, I'll stop sounding like a creepy person now 🤣

I feel like in American English we’d say “reenactment.” Reconstruction would be if you were rebuilding something-but honestly even that usage is rare because when most people hear “Reconstruction,” they think of the post-Civil War era.
I think he adds it in when he reaches a piece of railway with a lot of appeal, hence the toot-toot at the end haha. Plus in his Austrian rail video he "rapped" to it as well..

Funny that you call a settlement with a population of 800 to 1000 "tiny"..I grew up in a 70ish people village :DDD 1000 people is town size in my region of lower saxony,germany^^ Ironically,the town i live in now is only a TOWN because it got the market rights(the right to hold a market) from the tiny village i grew up in^^
You should have stopped in and ate at Buckie when you arrived there. The towns pubs are well known for their mountain oysters (aka prairie oysters) deep fried served with chips. Known locally as "Buckie Balls" Yes I sure did work that hard to make that dumb joke, I regret nothing!
