- Despite being most well-known as an open source engine replacement for Command & Conquer, OpenRA is much more than that! In this video, James briefly explores its uses before battling one particular title that benefited greatly from this engine's creation!

Not all missions are added because they have to be recreated, the whole lua script has to be written for each mission and tested before they can add to the main mod. Plus I believe only one person is doing that. And there isn't enough manpower as this is an open source project, no one is paid for that. Although they have patreon, it is only used for paying bills for servers' maintenance or resource center where custom maps can be downloaded from. Suffice to say, you cannot just add a mission from an original game and expect it to work out of the box.
And heh, I did contribute a lot to OpenHV (Hard Vacuum) and OpenKrush (KKND) and developed (with a lot of help) OpenSA (Swarm Assault). Nice video.
Thanks for the behind the scenes info! I figured it wouldn't have been as easy to just chuck the map files at the source port and hope for the best. :P We have a similar issue with TFTC, where one guy is responsible for ALL the mapping. It's a big ask for an unpaid project. Your hard work is appreciated, ditto that of the OpenRA team.
I feel it was awesome that EA and the community all played nice with all this.
It should be noted that there is an upcoming RTS game using OpenRA as its engine - D.O.R.F. RTS, an actual commercial game.

We absolutely love it.
We are also eager to see you playing any titles from the classic RPG *Arkania* in the Random DOS Game show in the future too!
thanks for the dune connection! never heard of openra until now.
I like OpenRA, even if the original was officially remade for modern platforms, the touch of the community is continuous and they usually add options and tweaks that satisfy the most demanding players.
Recently, I've been "modernizing" lots of PC games, from the DOS, x9 and later eras, without the fan patches, updates and such, we would be at a loss.
We can even play SimCity 2000 in widescreen, if I remember correctly, it's really simple to do.
One I'm particularly fond of is the Grayface patch for Might and Magic games. Widescreen and so many other improvements!
@@retrogamingdiscourse Check out the Widescreen Gaming Forum (WSGF) for a master list of games and how to get them to go widescreen as well as correct their field of view (FOV). I have a few hacks on there, especially for more obscure games like "AC-130: Operation Devastation".
Thank you for this OpenRA video!
You're welcome!
I don't know about RA. So thank you.
Actually only recently found out about Dune2 extended with the entirely new campaigns.
Every day is a school day! I love discovering things like that.
I've been waiting for a warcraft 2 source port of its calibre ever since the source code for it leaked in 2020.
I want you to keep mentioning this. Just on the off-chance that some RTS fan sees this and makes it a reality. Warcraft 2 deserves better!
@@retrogamingdiscourse oh I will. I'd do it myself if I could, I have no skill in coding sadly.
I thought there were more missions in the story, still, incredibly fun to play an RTS with all the modern QOL benefits and in ultrawide it plays great.
I just wish there are more resources on how to mod the OpenRA...
Solid game right here
I play open ra tiverian down for long time, and ints just perfect, It have multiplayer, editor, replay viewer, It just have every improvment i ever wish, 100% recomended for everione ho likes strategi games, and specialli for those ho play comand and conquer in the 90's
It plays very different than original CnC.
And its not even about PC difficulty. Utit stats are different.
How do you reduce the size of the infantry RA1?
"Hard Vacuum" aka "Fleshlight 2000".
Now that the games are re-released on Steam with EA app integration, I think OpenRA and the like should go from fan remakes to fan enhanced source ports and ways to play these games without DRM and additional clients. Even if we were to download repacks of the games just to run them without EA's BS.
I'd even say I wasted money on the remasters. aside from the hd sprites and the being able to see the briefing videos. I much prefer the gameplay of openra.
2024 I just discovered OpenRA
There's never a bad time to discover OpenRA!
What? Dune2002 NOT A CLASSIC? This is the classies of the classics lmao xD
The Open RA C&C engine was completely different to the original! Tanks could move and shoot, much longer range artillery, every war factory could have a build queue, etc. Had a very different feel. It wasn't for me, just uninstalled it. Everything died way too fast. Interesting though.
OpenRA is balanced for multiplayer, if you want see how this looks with pro gamers, watch Blackened's Barracks. Give you a different look of the game.
