Most of the items found in Singapore’s retail stores are usually a lot more expensive. Reason being high cost of rentals, and also most of the items like for example clothings are imported. Sometimes we Singaporeans purchase stuff off Amazon and have it shipped here as it can be cheaper than buying off the retail outlets. An example would be a pair of (I will not name brand) shoes would cost like USD79 in Amazon, plus shipping to SG for USD7, but will cost SGD209 here. That is double the price.
I feel like there should be more info on mosquitos in general. When i left to live in Singapore, i had no idea that dengue and such things were actually present in Singapore. What to bring/buy: DEET! Espectially when visiting zoo's, gardens, etc.
Wrong info. Ban to sell gums, but it's fine to bring in gums for personal consumption. It's perfectly legal to chew gums in Singapore just not selling it.

Rodger Campbell I don’t think the authorities will give you any issues if you produce a legit doctor’s prescription. I am Singaporean and I frequently pack my first aid kit overseas. On my return I never got questioned. Off the counter drugs are perfectly fine although some drugs might be banned for failing the toxicity tests. At the very most you will be asked to dispose them away. Prescription drugs are fine as long as there is a prescription. Customs here are not pharmacists so as long as the medicines are in their packaging you will be ok. What you don’t want to bring are drugs that are loose and looks questionable.
My wife bought a sewing machine from the states. She used just a regular socket adapter while I was at work. Imagine plugging in a 120v machine into a 240v supply. You guys did not mention the amount of CCTVs we have. Reason why we're safe is because of the CCTVs but most of the time they'll only use it IF there's trouble. Many 1st timers who visit SG will ALWAYS mention how strict we are and make it seem like we can't do much but in reality we are pretty chill people even though we have many laws that prohibit us from doing certain things. Gum is illegal to sell but in terms of chewing and bringing it to SG we tend to close one eye which is why when we visit Malaysia some of us will buy gums and bring into SG. Regarding 0:31 we have this saying "You can do anything, just don't get caught".
One punishment you forgot to mention, is the Rotan. It generally comes between Gaol and hanging. It entails a very large guy swinging a length of Rattan cane and hitting you on your back. Not pleasant. You only get 2-3 strokes at a time and they then take you down and let you heal, then they continue the sentence.
I wrote to a commissioner I think it was to get permission to bring my prescription drugs. That was the safest option along with keeping all your meds with you along with your prescription.
I lived in Singapore for 8 years and the issue of prohibitions was hardly noticeable. I agree with a few other posts which commented on the emphasis in this video on prohibitions and things you can’t do or bring. Singapore is hardly restrictive unless you want the freedom to bring in narcotics or watch porn. The truth is, the police presence is minimal (too low imv), and the screening at the airport far less strict on entry than other places. I find prohibition and regulation more of an issue where I now live in Germany and even Australia, where I spent most of my life. Other things worth considering when bringing with you are mosquito repellent (think dengue), sunscreen (many red tourists), Swimming costume (because they can be expensive to buy here and the size range may not cover the larger Caucasian).
I would say the sun is more brutal elsewhere, especially in Australia and western countries. Chewing gum was banned in Singapore more than 20 years ago for the reason that idiots stuck the chewed gum on lift buttons, chairs and threw them on the floor making a mess that cleaners take a long time to remove. Many senior citizens including me supported this ban. Even the Dubai metro also banned chewing gum!!!!! So, don't make a mountain out of a mole hill

Not 100% correct but your good intentions are appreciated, though I wish you wouldnt only portray Singapore from the perspective of prohibitions! My friends who travel here never feel inhibited or restrained in any way by our, admittedly, rather paternalistic laws. Really enjoy your vlogs. The next time you come to Singapore, I’d be happy to show you around my neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru!
I like Singaporeans sense of humor. I have a T-shirt that I got from Singapore that reads: Singapore is a "Fine" city :) The drug laws in Singapore is as draconian as my country - Malaysia.
Singapore has a great website to check what you may need regarding personal medications - check the Health Sciences Authority “Bringing Personal Medications into Singapore”
Singapore is crazy. I went there in the late 1980's. I had longish hair to my shoulders. The immigration guy went through every page in my passport - even those without stamps - looking at me after each page. I had flown in from Jakarta. He asked me where I'd been (normal - Indonesia), where I was going (normal - Malaysia/Thailand), and how long I planned to be in Singapore (normal - 2-3 days). He also asked how much money I had (kinda normal), then asked to see my cash (definitely not normal). He then stamped my visa for one week (as an American, I should have gotten 2 weeks) and told me to be out of the country in 3 days (most DEFINITELY not normal). I was laughing. Even the woman behind me thought it was crazy. I'd heard that in the 1970's the cops would cut guys' hair on the street if they thought it was too long. And in the 1990's they actually caned an American kid for graffiti (yeah, he was an idiot, but canning seems kind of a harsh punishment). Outlawing chewing gum seems kinda normal compared to. ;-) Still, I had a good time with my 4 days there, but it is my least favorite county I have visited so far (of 20 countries).
NIMESH Shinde Not sure if you are in Singapore yet but maybe I can help with your question. I am a photographer here in Singapore. You are free to take photos anywhere but you are not allowed by law to take photos of any public servants and government buildings, example would be police officers and police stations. No photography in gazetted areas which if you are a tourist will most likely not see. In most buildings like shopping centers and office buildings, they do not allow photography inside the premises but they can’t stop you from taking photos of the building exterior from across the streets. Public parks and any other places are fine.
I hate chewing gums. ive accidently touched so many chewing gums under public transports, it has got stuck on my pants and what not. love singapore for it.
soo wait if my state in usa has recreational marijuana( which starts january first of 2020) n medical marijuana n i have a card from my doctor for it... if im tested positive they still gonna jail me?
Different philosophy on laws and enforcement. In the USA we develop our hardened criminals. Minor offenses in the US you get a pass or a slap on the wrist (in SF 84 car windows a day are broken and as long as the theft is under $900 it's a minor offense). Steal from cars...no problem, just don't steal really expensive stuff...right? Same for littering, drugs, etc. No fear of laws, never go to jail until the crime is huge. In Singapore they hit you hard on the small offense's so you fear the law. You don't move on to larger crimes. So no gum under tables and chairs, a very clean city, a safe city. The people aren't afraid to correct you, don't eat on the MRT, don't litter. Would you tell someone in the US not to eat on the subway? Not to litter? You would be given the middle finger or worse be punched in the face. Strong enforcement of minor infractions means less major crimes.
Darryl K You are right for the most part, except I am not too sure about the correctional part. The laws here are so strict sometimes we just chose to shut up and let the relevant authorities handle the issue. Hardly would you see a local walking up to someone to correct him for a mistake for fear of it escalating into a fight. When a fight do start here people will be very quick to call the police, and if the police can’t get everyone to resolve their differences then all will be hauled in. Not something we locals would like to get into.
Just a few notes, consuming & personal possessing of gum is not illegal but improper disposable will land you with a fine under the littering offence. Though very rare, if you are found downloading software or media from any BitTorrent like applications is illegal too; even possession in digital form is included from what I am aware. Oh, it is illegal to eat and drink any solids or substance with the train system, buses wise, that is debatable; or if you are okay with getting STOMP-ed :D
Yes, not only fines but death penalties and corporal punishment for just vandalism/graffiti. The good thing about Singapore is that you can bring in a lot of food items (like cooked food, fruit) that are not allowed into Western countries like Australia because obviously Singaporeans can't live without food. Singaporeans have been flying in cakes, pastries, nuts and fruit like mangoes into Singapore without any issues.
Death penalty if you get caught trafficking illegal drugs, murder or crimes using arms. As for vandalism you may get 3 to 6 times of canes .Ask Michael Fay from USA.
Wrong info: 1)chewing a gum is still legal, I bought chewing gum from Malaysia and was chewing in front of the a custom officer, nothing happens 😊👍 2) electrical power point: what we are using is called the 3 pin plug, the 3rd pin is called the earth pin, which is grounded…this is because Singapore is a tropical country, and at times when there’s a heavy downpour, it tends to have thunderstorms…so the earth pin is to prevent and protect ur electrical appliances from a sudden surge from the thunderstorms…😊👍 3) you still can bring in cigarettes, but you have to pay tax…if I m not wrong, it’s call tobacco tax and alcohol tax….

Vitamins are usually fine unless it is something uncommon then bring prescription just in case. Normally medicine don't get stopped unless there is certain suspicious ingredients.
Gums are often over exaggerated for its illegality. It is fine for personal consumption, albeit not in huge quantity. But recreational drugs are a huge no no. That's for sure.

@@andyhooutdoors Ah I never thought of that. So it has been a drug trafficking issue.
@@Timithos Yup. That is the main reason why it was banned.
Wait so, am I allowed to bring, for example Avengers Endagme on a blu ray/dvd with me to Singapore?
Chewing gum was banned in Singapore more than 20 years ago for the reason that idiots stuck the chewed gum on lift buttons, chairs and threw them on the floor making a mess that cleaners take a long time to remove. Many senior citizens including me supported this ban. Even the Dubai metro also banned chewing gum!!!!! So, don't make a mountain out of a mole hill
I like her but Tah's heavy accent makes her super hard to understand! Maybe Jimmy can talk more when you do these kinds of videos because the info does seem super crucial to understand and useful. Not trying to be rude, I just had a lot of trouble understanding her. Proper subtitles may help as well. Thanks for the vid!!
As an American I had zero trouble understanding Tah.
@@Timithos i had trouble understanding her lol. Her accent was super thick. Subs would help!
I also had trouble understanding her with the accent 😭

What is the wettest month in Singapore? I will be staying a week in April.
Ahh sorry we dont know:)
Nov - Jan
Thank you for giving us amazing views
Thank you for watching!
They made " NO CHEWING GUMS " as a rule because of the cleanliness of their country
It works! Spotless place :)
Well u can chew it but not sell it, if u sell it u will be fined
Chewing gum was banned becos some idiots used it to stick on mrt door sensors causing the door to malfunction
Love your videos, great, informative content. The only thing that I don’t appreciate is the off side camera that you’re not looking into. It’s quite disconcerting to watch and I end up just listening and not watching. Other than that, keep up the great work!
Thank you for your input, we were trying something new with multiple angles. We will keep this in mind!
What an lovely place!
We really love it here!
@@DivertLiving That's good!
Omg, I brought gum in 🤦🏾♀️. I didnt know. Its a beautiful country. Lovely friendly people. Loved the Spectra show at Shoppes at Marina Bay. Had a drink at the bar at the Fullerton Hotel. My GrabShare driver was so friendly from SIN to my Hotel. He was absolutely lovely. Next time, Ill visit Sentosa Island.
Hello Sis Am Ghanaian in Lebanon but want Job in Singapore to move there can i get some ideas of moving there pls?

can i travel to singapore with TB medicine?
Gum is not illegal , it’s just that you cannot sell
What about Travel Calm ginger tablets !
It is NOT illegal to consume gums in Singapore. However import and sale of gum is illegal.
Thank you so much
Definitely trying to come singapore
Divert Living, you have mentioned quite a few incorrect facts and laws. Including bringing in prescibed medicine. Singapore does not have any season except hot, hot, hot, and humid, humid, humid.
Aww im sorry you think that. These are very researched and correct. You can find the source at the immigration and customs website:)
I remember one particularly cold February evening in Singapore. It was so cold I had to put on a sweater. It was about 26°C.
hey :) quick question- will they search your laptop for bootleg files or is it just cds? also tobacco is fine if i declare it right?!
I declared my smokes on my first visit , was then told of the duty ! Which I should have paid as smokes are ridiculously expensive !
Scott Gordon didnt quite get u there- are u saying you had to pay duty upon declaring?
@@konstantinkleber8792 yes , duty on the cigarettes . I bought 2 cartons at home for for $30 , had to pay something ridiculous for duty . So they confiscated them , I had them destroyed .
I had no idea of the street prices . I almost stopped smoking :-) .
Duty in NZ was $135 !!
@@scottgordon1781 goddamn. aight thnx for the heads up ;)
Scott Gordon how much in SGD to purchase cigarettes in Singapore? and how much is the duty on entering?
Can u carry powerbanks?
Yes you can :)
Nice dear, Love from India🇮🇳🇮🇳
Can we wear football jersey?
So true!
I have my thyroid prescription on my phone, is this ok?
I've wanted to meet you.
Is there any rule about the usage of a DSLR camera at any place in Singapore..?? I'm planning a trip to Singapore next month
Not that i know of
NIMESH Shinde Not sure if you are in Singapore yet but maybe I can help with your question.
Thank you so much Andy ho outdoors and divert living :) looking forward to clicking pictures in Singapore ✨
NIMESH Shinde You are most welcome here!
I hate chewing gums. ive accidently touched so many chewing gums under public transports, it has got stuck on my pants and what not. love singapore for it.
Yes i agree, i dont chew it anyway!
soo wait if my state in usa has recreational marijuana( which starts january first of 2020) n medical marijuana n i have a card from my doctor for it... if im tested positive they still gonna jail me?
No you have a script
other countries do not give one duck about your local laws. Do not push your luck.
Pls I want to visit Singapore, is the coronavirus over?
I have no idea! Sorry!
Can i bring just 10 cigarettes into SGP or is that not allowed?
Singapore🇸🇬 is a FINE city.
Nice Video
Singapore in summer? It always summer in Singapore ,
Wrong info: 1)chewing a gum is still legal, I bought chewing gum from Malaysia and was chewing in front of the a custom officer, nothing happens 😊👍
2) electrical power point: what we are using is called the 3 pin plug, the 3rd pin is called the earth pin, which is grounded…this is because Singapore is a tropical country, and at times when there’s a heavy downpour, it tends to have thunderstorms…so the earth pin is to prevent and protect ur electrical appliances from a sudden surge from the thunderstorms…😊👍
3) you still can bring in cigarettes, but you have to pay tax…if I m not wrong, it’s call tobacco tax and alcohol tax….
I've wanted to meet you.
Hey, can I bring my gym supplements? Just as electrolyte powder, protein powder, creatine, citrulline ? But the packs I have are all opened. So can I bring such opened packs of gym supplements?

Vitamins are usually fine unless it is something uncommon then bring prescription just in case. Normally medicine don't get stopped unless there is certain suspicious ingredients.

Gums are often over exaggerated for its illegality. It is fine for personal consumption, albeit not in huge quantity. But recreational drugs are a huge no no. That's for sure.
