  • Dakar is one of the toughest races on the planet. From -10 degrees at 4500m altitude to 45 degrees in the Argentine desert, it's tough.
    So how does there kit get them 10,000km across South America, keep them safe and prevent injury?

    Simon Pavey’s Dakar ride was amazing and a well documented story in “Race to Dakar”

    Thank you for showing and sharing with us your personal used gear. Seeing how well the equipment held up during use and seeing how easy each product fit`s and stores is far better then seeing bright new shiny equipment that many adventure rider`s have store away in their closest collecting dust instead of dirt from trails.

    Thanks Simon. Your Gear is very similar to the gear I wear for adventure riding in South Africa. I've got the exact same knee braces. According to me knee braces are as important as a helmet.

    A far cry from the BMW Rally2 jacket you wore in the Race To Dakar video. I still wear mine for mostly road use, but with all the armour in them, they are heavy.

    What's the brand of the heated first layer? Never seen that before and after 4 rally trails it sounds perfect.

    great video=. thanks. But one point is not clear: "only chest and back protector"? Does that mean you do NOT wear the Alpinestars layer with the elbow pads, etc.???

    Great vid! Couple questions... have you tried the water tube system that ports into the helmet? I had what you had and found it was hard to get a free hand sometimes to grab a bit of water whereas if it were in the helmet I would have been drinking more. Also, do you think something like the Leatt 5.5 armor (full chest and sleeves) would be too heavy for you? Thanks

      He rides with that ce 1 back and chest he quickly showed. Doesn't like full armor cuz the weight.

    Just curious if there is a compromise of road abrasion protection vice impact protection given you mentioned wearing the same gear on your adventure bike? I am assuming you wear the same gear on road aswell?

      This is a great question. It kinda depends on the type of riding. I wouldn't go road riding in this gear no. If I'm riding technical off-road ADV riding I would.

      ASW Rally Jacket. I would recommend the Leatt 4.5 X-Flow now.
      ASW are Brazilian and not easy to find outside of Brazil or Portugal. The Leatt jacket is very similar but much easier to find 👌

    So wait?No upper body padding? Elbow/shoulder/back protection? Sort of looked like there some pads in the second "base layer" but maybe it is electric heating panels??

      So the chest and back protector are in the armour but a lot of guys, including Simon don'e wear shoulder or elbow protection.
      It's compulsory to wear chest and back protection too.

      So they don't catch on the footpegs. All mx style trousers are designed this way.

      The Brand is ASW. They're brazilian. They make good kit, at a good price but they also do custom rally jackets.

      The Neck Brace is a very personal piece of kit. Some people love them, so riders are required by their teams to wear them and some riders hate them.

    So he just wears a roost guard under a desert jacket?, what does he use to protect his forearms and shoulders??.. Nothing I guess??..

      Simon personally wears nothing. For him it's a comfort thing. Having more freedom and less heat traps are important for a lot of riders off road.
      The chest and back protector are CE approved just a roost guard. They have to be under Dakar rules.
