    I love the humility when you say you are “above average”, then add that you “only” finished 61st out of 161 Dakar starters that year. That is the top 33% of the top 0.1% of motorcycle riders in the world. You’re doing alright Llel! 😉

    From training triathlon the biggest thing I learned was, "it doesn't get easier, you just get faster".

    “Above average maybe”?? You finished a Dakar Rally!!! That is exponentially above what the “average” rider can do, no matter what we might try to convince ourselves of while out on an adventure or single track ride. I’ll be on my T7, rolling across the sand at what feels like a good pace and start wondering if I could do it for even one day, let alone many days, then it occurs to me that I’m averaging maybe 1/3 of the speed. Of a Dakar rider. I miss the days when the Dakar was won on big twins, before huge money, sponsors, pro riders , etc transformed it into what it is today. I think the biggest shock to me is how much it costs to race Dakar, even as a privateer. Your video shows such a different perspective than you get from simply watching the highlight videos-thank you for the reality check! Having ridden motocross, played hockey, and competed in archery tournaments with pro level athletes, the chasm between even above average enthusiasts and pros is hard to fathom; the difference between low ranked pros and super stars can be equally shocking. Thanks for a great video!

    Llel, as you've finished a Dakar that makes you a lot closer to a pro rider than 'just above average'.
    There will be a lot more riders wishing to attain your level, than those you're wishing to emulate. But I appreciate the humbleness of that comment.

    Great job. Loved the whole concept. I was living in Paris when the race was launched for the 1st time. I would wake up at 5:00 am to walk down direction Trocadero place and enjoy the machines and racers. Such good memories unfortunately the original spirit of Thierry Sabine hasn't been maintained. Nowadays we barely have true adventurous amateurs but rather Pros racers with factory machines and very high budgets. Also what I'am missing the most is the African continent with it's breath taking sceneries and lovely people.

    I’ve wondered often how these guys train. I did my first off road adventure trip last year and soon realized a certain level of fitness is necessary even as a novice. Surprised that it’s not more intense. Thanks for a great insight into what’s required 👍

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think the intensity is the volume. Different types of training have different requirements and for the most part endurance training is about volume and maintaining power, so there isn’t any benefit to utterly killing yourself daily. That’s what I learnt!

      I think the level is probably pretty consistent in the race, it's just the gap from 50-30 is big and the gap from 30-20 is the same jump again. It's really hard to understand until you see it y'know.

    Great video. An Indoor trainer works wonders for cycle/bike fitness. Multiple kits for each activity (shirts/shorts/bibs/swim costume/towels) - sorted and ready to pick up and walk helps reduce admin to once a week - also helps when weather changes, injury or strain or simply the gym pool is getting cleaned etc so easy to change activity when planned activity can’t be done (did it for triathlon training and transferred it to multi day dirt bike rally’s). Food / nutrition is also a mission -bulk cooking Sundays.

    Would be cool if this were a series of videos for a longer stretch culminating in a rally event to see how much more performance you have?

    The biggest thing that makes a winner is drive. Years ago, more than I'd like to admit, a cycling coach friend of mine and I were discussing the up and coming young riders. I was very excited about a local rider who I thought had what it took to go all the way and be competitive at the Tour level. My coach friend disagreed because; "When he places second he's up on the podium smiling because he thinks he had a good day" His money was on another promising junior "because when he's on the podium in second he's angry that he lost". The local guy I liked did ride the Tour de France a few times but as a domestique and I can't remember his name at all right now, the other rider was Lance Armstrong.

    This was amazing. Also your bit at the end where they have something different - see it slower, remember the road book more, dig a little deeper. It's just the practice and training you did for 2 weeks but doing it for years and years. You'd be amazed how close anyone could get to them if they did what they did for as long as they did.

    • @BrakeMagazine
      @BrakeMagazine  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree, but I've done a lot of dirt bike practice and racing and there is something different in there. That last little bit, the little step between really good and elite is more than just practice.
