Elizabeth Holmes takes Sanjay Gupta inside Theranos (2016)

  • Elizabeth Holmes, the CEO of Theranos, escorted CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta around her famously secretive research and development lab.
    'The Dropout' offers an eye-opening view of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos
    by Brian Lowry, CNN
    (CNN) Elizabeth Holmes has been a source of fascination for many since glimpsing the husky-voiced, wide-eyed persona she affected in Alex Gibney's documentary "The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley." Amanda Seyfried nails all of that in "The Dropout," a slick Hulu docuseries devoted to Holmes' rise and Shakespearean fall, as well as the gender dynamics at play throughout.
    Boasting an inordinately good cast in even relatively minor roles, the series adopts an unexpectedly sympathetic posture toward Holmes, at least in the early going, as she seized on the idea of improving the blood-testing process before dropping out of Stanford to pursue her vision.
    Part of that ambition, it's surmised, stemmed from watching her father's struggles thanks to working at Enron, although she clearly derived the wrong anything-to-win lesson from that experience.

      John Carreyrou wrote in his book BAD BLOOD that he felt gender was definitely a factor in her phenomenal rise and the lack of rigorous questioning (Walgreen's putting her useless untested crap in their stores!) It was also tied to that Aryan ideal of blonde and blue-eyed (bulging blue eyes that never blinked, as in a cult leader). Now those very traits seem creepy, but back then they were mesmerizing. The incredulity that a woman like that could accomplish anything spoke volumes. When I look at early interviews, it always seems to be older men doing an amazed, gosh-gee-whiz, "look at this amazing young lady" crap, while she sat there and nodded vapidly. I am creeped out because it is obvious to me they would NOT have done any of this with an older woman, a less-attractive woman, a black woman, or a man. th-cam.com/video/uJDc4tOU3zo/w-d-xo.html

    The impact Theranos has had on blood testing companies is still relevant today. Because of how ridiculous the claims Theranos made, investors who didn't have the medical or technical knowledge unfortunately fell for the snake oil. All investment money for the blood testing market went to Theranos, meaning that companies who were making real blood testing kits that were trying to realistically improve the current equipment weren't getting any funding, because Theranos took it all away. Then, because so many investors got burned by Theranos since they were lying about the technology, blood testing companies still have trouble collecting funds because Theranos scared all the investors away from the industry since they now view it as a scam.

By bullsh*thing investors about her miracle machine (Edison) they all started funding Theranos so no other R&D companies who were legitimate, received anything because of this. So by being a fraudulent charlatan and promising tech that was years ahead of the current methodology, she literally sent blood work/analysis and diagnosis years back in the other direction! And in her grand hubristic vision of herself posturing as the ''Female Steve Jobs'' and all, she thought she could just throw into it whatever would come off as the most altruistic, and that a few minor glitches here and there would largely go unnoticed or simply be ignored. And when shit hit the fan, she really milked that woman card for all it was worth, to such an extent that she happenned to get pregnant twice, at oddly convenient times, while on trial. As a 26 year old entrepreneur, i was looking for inspiring business movies or series to watch. It is now 3 AM, i could not stop binging The Dropout series. I stumbled onto this without diving too deep in the trailers. During episode 1,2 and 3 i was rooting for Elizabeth because the entrepreneurial spirit it takes to overcome obstacles. About 4 episodes in i started hating this woman with every fiber in me. By the time she changed her voice to be more "deep" i was about to pull my hair out. Can you imagine the bone chilling shock i got at the end of episode 8 when they started listing the real-life case updates, it was literally just then that i realized this was a real life event. I am young and not from the US, so i never heard of Theranos or the real Elizabeth. This is insane on a level unimaginable. Elizabeth, you are a disgrace to all Women, Humanity and the entire Entrepreneur Society. The fact that even after all this, you can remain cool about your crimes proves you are a psychopathic monster with alien eyes, a demons hart and an insufferable pretentious voice. I hope justice prevails in honor of all lives lost, families ruined financially or in health. F YOU!

Why did these investors never require outside "clinical" studies of this machine with the thought of "I'll pay for the clinical studies from an outside party and if it passes the clinical studies then I'll invest xyz, but every year their has to be a clinical study by an non-affiliated group in order to get further investment."? The idea that one drop of blood could be used to test for myriad different things was absurd. Those who bought into this idea just bought into a sales pitch without rationally considering the fundamental idea behind the supposed technology.

    She seems condescending to me, when she makes fun of the interviewer for calling a lancet a needle. I've spent years in college studying neuroscience and biology, and unlike her, I graduated, and then taught phlebotomy and worked in many phlebotomy labs. I understand that colloquially, lay people use the word needle to refer to a device for puncturing, like a sewing needle. She seems desperate try to assert dominance, whcih is funny when you remember that she is a drop out! She should be learning not teaching lol There's nothing dominant about an ignorant person who lies to everyone to boost their own self image. 🙄

    It’s honestly a great idea to have mass produced blood tests the way she showed with the Cholesterol tests. It’s a shame that she put the horse before the cart and didn’t focus on quality and making products that actually worked before deciding that she was going to be a billionaire and have her technology do all things it simply wasn’t capable of.

      There is simply a fundamental flaw in her idea that Theranos never even ATTEMPTED to address..... blood from a fingerstick is filled with contaminants, like fat cells, interstitial fluid, etc. We do very routine fingersticks in the medical field for glucose, but any serious results get a venipuncture and lab study to confirm. And we already HAVE a rapid, handheld device that we use in emergency medicine called an I-stat.... but guess what: it still uses blood from the vein AND we send blood to the lab to confirm!!

    • @rigelb9025
      @rigelb9025 ปีที่แล้ว

      But here's what's fascinating about that segment : in the moments before that (starting around 3:06), it was not duper's delight, but rather fraudster's fright (I just made that up) that was written in bold characters on her face. As you say, kind of a sigh of relief begins to appear, around 5:06 when she starts talking about her beloved INVESTORS. And in ennumerating all of the reasons why they chose to place their money & trust in her company, not once does she mention ''high-quality & reliable results''. She just goes on and on about the vision, what they represent, what they were trying to accomplish, etc. Anything measurable & satisfying any medical standard was far too much to ask of her. But hey, medicine was never her field, was it. Out of sheer curiosity, I wonder how long an average man could have pulled this off.

Was Gibbons a highly decorated British research scientist? Gibbons started to challenge Holmes on the the science of Theranos and Holmes was going to fire him.

    • @dreamwithinadreamfilms

      Because it’s common sense that what Theranos was claiming had no medical or scientific validity; and that the company’s claims defied the most basic logic, elementary medical knowledge, scientific knowledge, and common sense about how blood tests are run.
