THANK YOU for sticking w these reactions, Donnie…
This is my fav of the live performances they did, very fun!
My FAVORITE song from the Barcelona album, tho, is “ENSUENO”. It’s the only song on the album where Freddie actually sings in an OPERATIC style. (Aside from “Exercises In Free Love”, which is actually a Demo vocal exercise w no lyrics, where Fred’s singing Montserrat’s soprano part.) Montserrat talked him into singing more of an operatic style for “Ensueno”/gave him some tips. He also is singing in his natural lower baritone (which we don’t get to hear very often).
    IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL.

Hello Donnie .. My favorite song off the Barcelona album. A little bit of opera, a little bit of soul. Just love it ❤ Freddie wrote the music for all the songs & most of the lyrics except this song .. pianist Mike Moran & Freddie elicited the help of lyricist Sir Tim Rice for The Golden Boy (& The Fallen Priest). Sir Tim Rice commented that “the golden boy” is Freddie Mercury! 🤵🏻‍♂️👑

@@marciebulsaraorcutt I know, right? Watched an interview with Sir Tim Rice when he made that comment! He was laughing when Freddie came to him and said “I ran out of lyrics” 😁

Yes and Mary's the female protagonist in this song. She wanted Freddie as a husband all those years ago. She was quite crossed with him during the early days when she was the bread winner. She was hurt with the reality of their relationship ending as it had; however, it shifted. She then began to love & see Freddie in a different light...they became soulmates and SHE'D kept his secrets down thru the yrs.
Sir Tim Rice & Freddie goes way back to the early to mid 70's so he WOULD have had first hand knowledge as a close friend to observe 'n witness Freddie 'n Mary's relationship from the early days to Freddie's demise. So it fit 'n makes so much more sense after Sir Rice disclosed the information regarding Freddie being "The Golden Boy!"
Sir Rice also stated that "Bo-Rhap" was 'bout Freddie's coming out as well but didn't really go into how he'd knows. My guess is that since they were good friends, Freddie had disclosed to him what it was all 'bout. That he'd understand his pain as a lyricist. That said, it's clear (at least to me) the 'Mama' in that song isn't Mrs. Bulsara, but Mary, the woman with whom the protagonist is coming out to. He's telling her to carry on but w/o their relationship at it was. He'd fully expected her to turn on him upon his confession & whatever happens, he'll accept it (anyway the wind blows). The thing is that she didn't reject him as the protagonist expected. She didn't stone or spit in his eye...she didn't love him 'n leave him to die. She love for him was so great that she was able to except him as he was 'n stayed by this side 'til he'd took his last breath.

I was a bit surprised, that you took the risk again to listen to an opera kind of song. 🤣 Pls, check out Freddie's cover song The Great Pretender, that summerizes his life so well. And it's definitely not an operatic one, but brings you back to the 1950s.

Freddie was a big fan of the R'NB group, The Platters! Their version is the most famous of the song written by Buck Ram. Their version had Tony Williams on lead. His is one of the most distinctive voices of the time.
Donnie, know that Freddie did this song not as a closeted gay man coming out, but as a person who had to take-on an alternate persona in order for him to BE Freddie Mercury onstage, in various Queen videos, 'n while out in the public.
Freddie felt that he'd created a monster in 'Freddie Mercury' which became unbearable from time-to-time. He's even quoted to say that he'd sometimes wished he could go out 'n not have to put on his Freddie Mercury face. The man was a quiet, gentle soul in private, but an outrageously bombastic out in the public. He'd often acted like an ass 'n had a 'dirty mouth' onstage & out in public...but that was just a façade he'd used to shield the real Freddie.
BTW, everybody has said that Freddie took on the 'Mercury' name as Mercury was a messenger to the Gods. I've not heard him say this nor have I've come across any written or oral interviews where he states this. This just might be one of those things that rumors start from somewhere 'n they take off. in the Queen song, "My Fairy King" is where Brian May says Freddie got the idea of calling himself Mercury...the line where he says: "Oh mother Mercury, look what they've done to me." But I'm not so sure that Bri knew this for sure or was only speculating as he'd only brought this to light AFTER Freddie died. In addition, I know Freddie was a Virgo 'n often times Mercury in Virgo means detail oriented which he was so I can see this. Lastly, Freddie being a fan of The Platters as well as his other favorite group, Smile (formerly made-up with Brian May Roger Taylor, Chris Smith (who'd left before they'd actually recorded their songs), & Tim Staffel (a former college mate of Freddie who was also a childhood mate of Brian May's). These groups were coincidentally were on the Mercury label.
Freddie often would look to other artists for his muse 'n inspiration (just look at the Black 'n White party from the American in Paris movie from the Golden Hollywood era th-cam.com/video/BkSmbnejK7w/w-d-xo.html ). Freddie's "Black 'n White" party was the theme of his 39th birthday party where some footage was used in his "Living On My Own" video. Freddie even borrows the lighted stairway in his The Great Pretender video from that same movie (An American in Paris - George Guétary performance of "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" th-cam.com/video/HVvGEBDioHg/w-d-xo.html ). Freddie also borrowed from the 1912 ballet by Nijinsky, Afternoon of a Faun for the dream sequence of Queen's video's "I Want to Break Free" ( th-cam.com/video/Vxs8MrPZUIg/w-d-xo.html ).
So you see, the whole point of Freddie's doin' The Great Pretender, reprising old roles he'd had done in Queen's history (which he'd still was able to get into all those yrs later BTW).

I like much more their song: HOW CAN I GO ON....both so amazing...also react to MADE IN HEAVEN, for Freddie's heavenly high range...too beautiful...lyrics sad ...i think he talks about his illness: "they/re turning me upside down, looking for possibilities, not to many around..." 'made in heaven' refers to how people find Freddie's voice...it is from his solo album

This I would tell Donnie the background of the official Freddie Mercury vs the Queenified video version.
The original video version from Freddie's solo work is based on the play: Dontae's Inferno. It appears to be based on the chapter that depicts Hell 'n how with the power of love, the demons of Hell are driven back.
The Queenified version is simply a compilation of their onstage performances 'n the music is 'Queenified' with Bri's distinctive Red Special 'n Rog's heavy drumming...making the sounds of a heart beating. My personal favorite is the latter as I believe they'd got it right had that song been presented to them as a Queen song initially instead of it being released as a solo effort. The only thing I think Bri/Rog got wrong with scaling back on the piano playing. THIS was part of Freddie's identity...his essence. The original version is piano lead whilst the Queenified version is rhythm guitar 'n drum lead.

It was a live pantomime to playback as Freddie was having those vocal nodule issues again & it was felt 'safer' for them to pantomime the song despite having all those back-up singers & musicians there.
