10 Levels Of Djent

  • Djent/Progressive Metal is one of my favorite genres, with bands like Meshuggah/Periphery/TesseracT/Animals As Leaders etc. So it's time for me to whip out my 7 string guitar, play some low-tuned Djent-y riffs and go through the (IMO) different levels of Djent, featuring lots of Drop G riffage (as well as possibly lower than that...). Hope you like it!
    Did I miss any level? \o/

    I was wonder if you had any tips on how to get your drum sound? I've been trying for weeks to get this exact "squishy" sounding drum kit and I can't figure it out. I've come close, but yours sounds so much cleaner. I have GGD Invasion, and love the way they sound, but this drum sound is exactly what I'm trying to achieve but haven't been able to figure it out. Any help is greatly appreciated!

      Glad you liked it! Definitely also guilty of loving the entry level Djent as well, haha.
      I'm actually using Modern & Massive, heavily processed though. Not a single trick to making them sound a certain way, sadly. But for kick, don't be afraid to EQ and compress heavily. I have tons of processing for my kick. As for the snare, I think it's important to realize that each snare track is gonna sound horrible on it's own. You just need to know what you want to get out of it. Snare top is where the main part of the snare's body comes from, snare bottom is the high-end "snap" of the snare, and the room sounds are where the "smack" comes from. Honestly my snare sound is probably 50% just the room sound!

    • @DennisMartenssonOfficial
      @DennisMartenssonOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ghost notes refers to the drums, haha. Might have been a bit unclear. Essentially the ghost notes are the hits on the snare with lower velocity in-between the hits on the snare with higher velocities!

    • @NathanielBTM
      @NathanielBTM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DennisMartenssonOfficial oooh haha, I was aware of what ghost notes were in the context of drums... that's why I was questioning it and mentioned the extra beats between a measure (ghostnotes on a snare) as I thought the video was strictly about the guitar techniques lol but I guess it does make more sense to incorporate the whole composition rather than just mentioning what the guitars do. I was like... A ghost note on a guitar? and just assumed there was a guitar technique with the same name. I know some guitarists do dead notes along to the ghostnote's of snares. I think Ocean's Ate Alaska do it from time to time. Chris turner loves his ghost notes

    It wouldn’t be Djent if we went back to Metalcore since Metalcore bands were not as technical and versatile with heir sounds and style plus Djent wasn’t as known either since Meshuggah, Dream Theater and Sikth were sort of newish back then and mostly referred themselves as metal or metal with a hint of other styles yet Djent and Thall were not a considered real thing and wasn’t just common amongst bands that used such label identities.
