- We all know that Misha from Periphery and Buster from Humanity’s Last Breath stole ALL their ideas from Meshuggah…but which alien planet did Meshuggah come from? Are the members of Meshuggah actually symbiotes that feast on the brains of humans with their ultra technical groove oriented metal? Find out the answers to all your deepest, darkest djent questions here in this video! I cover a brief history of djent and how it formed out of groove and thrash metal and is also a close cousin to NÜ METAL. Then we get into the dirty details about what exactly to do with your hands when you’re just getting into metal guitar playing. This is a long one, so use the chapters to your advantage to skip around and find the parts of the video most applicable to you. As always, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or ask a question. It’s officially guitar study time, so get out your notebooks and your metronomes, let’s turn science and reality on it’s head!

Dude you are going to be one of the best teachers this planet needs. Thank you. NEVER STOP.
These kind words mean so much to me. Lot's more lesson videos in the works. Digging into alternate, economy and sweep picking next...and hopefully another djent lesson soon since it seems like people are enjoying this video.
the youtube algorithm did a great job with this video , this is GOLD!
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you found this helpful. I've got a new video coming out soon about how to practice scales, I think you'll dig it.
Just wanted to note that the term "djent" was coined by Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah), not Misha. He has mentioned it multiple times in interviews, however, so I can see where the confusion might come from. Nice video!
Thanks for correcting me on this, and thanks for watching.
Came here to say this
🤓
I cringed so hard when he said it was Misha.
Tomas Haake would disagree with you. It was Misha.
Thanks for making this, Chris Pratt.
😂😂😂you're welcome!
Not only does this method and technique work well for guitar, it is also applicable to playing bass using a pick. My picking speed has increased exponentially while playing in good meter using a metronome.Another factor to consider with bass is using some forearm exercises for building stregth and endurance. GREAT VIDEO!

Thanks for watching gary, you're right, the picking technique is applicable to any stringed instrument.
I'm a simple man, I see an orange 8 strings, headless, kiesel VM8 guitar, I just click...
Fantastic video man. Ive been around guitar my entire life but am just now learning to play myself. Thank you!
Since I was a teenager I've always used Dava Control picks. They are thin in the center, and thick at the ends. Perfect for "Pinch Harmonics", and great for strumming.
Great series! Many thanks for your job!
The tone is actually tube screamer-> amp-> noise gate. For a super simple djent tone and not too much gain.
I only recently picked up my first 8-string, but I've been playing on and off for years on a 6. There is a wonderful balance of humor and knowledge here that I'm really enjoying, so great job and thanks much! I've already learned a ton from just the first 20 minutes.
Thanks so much for the comment, I'm glad you found some good info here. Check out my new Djent video, I go a lot deeper with these concepts in that video in terms of technique. Thanks for being here 🤘
Very nice video! Super helpful - thx and pls do more like this!
Thank you so much for this
the guitar drums thing is genius! I haven't played my guitar in a while and decided to pick it back up after learning music production and man this little exercise helped me get my string skipping chops back down
Awesome!!! Thank you sir!!!!!
I really enjoyed the video and I am taking your advice. Thanks for that
Keep the djent coming Uncle Drew 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Wow. this seems like a sick channel! Thank you!
Great video, nice to see content aimed at beginners. +1 dude 👍👍
Wow i discovered you with your previous Djent lesson last week, what a nice surprise to see this one lol
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, thanks for watching 👍
Wicked video man, refreshing to see Djent still getting some reps in 2022! Have a listen to Modern Day Babylon for a hidden little gem of sound
Thanks for the kind words Shannon, I'll check out Modern Day Babylon and see what's up with their guitar tone. I really appreciate you!
What a Djent-lemen 👏
Why thank you!
Man, thank you, you are awesome! 😍Time to practice a lot, and like in Dark Souls: GIT GUD 🤘
Great video. Subbed 👏🏻
Thanks for watching!
I'm 1:27 and I already know you're criminally underrated. Subbed.

I'm glad you found this video helpful. Best of luck djenting and grooving away my friend!
@@DrewCreal ur work is such an inspiration 👌🤟🥳💯💕i
Thanks!
You're welcome!
Ok I'm saving this video for when I learn guitar lol. In the meantime, somebody care to chime in on something for me? The game Street Fighter 5 (SF5/SFV) has some music that has Djent elements but is also pretty melodic. I've never heard anything like it and I'm trying to find more or see if there's a subgenre out there that sounds similar. The three tracks that are main examples of what I'm referring to are "SFV Main Menu Theme", "SFV Arcade Edition Menu Theme" and "SFV Ring of Pride Alternative". Figured I'd ask here and at the very least hopefully whoever looks these up enjoys them too.
Listen to: Intervals, Chon, The Omnific, Plini, Polyphia, Walking Across Jupiter, Animals As Leaders
Nice video, it covers a lot
Thank you Mr. Black.
Hey I have positive grid the spark need help in creating djent tones. Also thank you that was awesome keep it up
Thanks for the encouragement, I'm glad you found this helpful. In the mean time, I'll try and get my hands on a Spark.
@@DrewCreal hey bro that's awesome!!! It means a lot 👍👍👍
33:35 is the biggest piece of knowledge dropped in the whole video
Been playing metal since the early 90's but the newer progressive metal kind of blows my mind. I understand the music theory behind it but the progressions and tunings are still eluding me. I can play Dream Theater type stuff but Periphery, Tesseract, Caligula's Horse and other bands seem just a little out of my grasp in regards to the technique they use.
saya dari indonesia, genre Djent sudah mulai berkembang di sini..cuma belum familiar ajj
What's the song at the start please?
What tuning should i use for 6 string?
Try AEADGB, it's a drop A tuning that works great for this style. Try using 12 or 13 gauge strings.
@@DrewCreal Uh thats what my 7 string is tuned in haha way too floppy on my 24.5 inch 6 string. Doesn't help the strings are like 10 to 46s lol
When you play djent do you drop d tune the guitar?
There's a lot of different tunings you can use for Djent or modern progressive metal. Meshuggah famously tubes down a half step with their 8 strings, Archspire plays in this tuning EAEADGBE, and I believe Tosin and Javier from Animals as Leaders play with the drop D string relationship so their tuning would be EBEADGBE. For the music that I play, most of the time I'm in standard 8 string tuning or the Animals as Leaders tuning. The sky is the limit though, you can tune and set up the guitar however you'd like to.
Slap funk djent. You're welcome 😎
pit was amazing in that vid of your band bro
lol thanks, that was a very fun show!
Rhythm pyramid good practice
What band is playing at the beginning of the video?
Echopraxia
@@DrewCreal thanks a lot!
What is that banjo 🪕 sound?
Fedrick thordenal is djent daddy!
Yeah i dont like the accents too, its ruin my timing because its too loud that i cant tell if im playing with click or not also its make me hold the last beat longer to anccitipate the 1st beat of new messure and make me out of click.
Well, its a genre now that Periphery named their album it
Are you digging their new album?
@@DrewCreal im actually incorrect, their album is "Djent is NOT a Genre" 😂
Yeah, I like it. Not all of it, but if the song is good, its really good.
Good ol dj0nt
Man ngl Misha losing the weight over the last few years, he looks so much happier and healthier. proud of that guy
I'm just here to say Weenis again
Welcome back!
Did you sell that Kiesel vader?
I did! I've got a different one now, just put out a new video on it!
@@DrewCreal holy shit! was it on reverb by any chance I believe I bought it!
Yep! I sold it to someone in UT, I think that's who you bought it from.
@@DrewCreal I think your right!
Holy shit, AHR right?
Shout out to another Dava User
sorry to be negative man as any information is good information, but none of that is Djent. it's more like thrash or metalcore just played on an 8string.
Justin, did you watch the whole video? Maybe you could take some time to explain to me and the viewers what djent really is then. I'm all ears brother and I'm ready to learn.
1st off, just want to say that the techniques are solid and needed for anyone that wants to play metal. That being said, there were too many techniques missing. This was a good metalcore or thrash lesson but you cant just tune to F, play metallica, and call it djent. Where are all the odd time signatures, polyrhyms, contrasting rhythms, dissonant chords, and weird arpeggios? Very good tutorial for someone who is learning or wants to learn how to play old school thrash, hardcore, or metalcore though. Again, not knocking the technique or even the delivery, just sayin.
Those are some good thoughts. My goal with this video was to give some beginners some essential techniques to get them started. I think I'll cover that stuff in a future video. Either way, thanks for watching.
Love seeing all the Meshuggah fans with their bright pink panties in a wad. “Periphery didn’t make djent” bruh who cares!? They pushing it harder than meshuggah is and they still praise meshuggah while doing it. Periphery and Misha has done so much for the djent community with online content that I don’t even think of Meshuggah. 😂
They're all great! Love me some Periph and Shugg!
The Deftones are a genre.
So many great bands in the Deftones genre!
@@DrewCreal There are a lot of atmospheric elements to music made my bands who’re absolutely derivative of the ‘tones. Chino is also the only person who can ‘rap-rock’ in a way that doesn’t make me want to copulate with a full-grown male hippo in a cactus nursery.
@@deadseveredheads But daddy Durst :(
nobody called groove metal to pantera in 90s
You're right, music critics didnt start calling it groove metal until later. But it's a legit term to describe what was happening in metal around that time.
You misspelled djenre.
🤣
Ever seen the weird way Marty Friedman holds his pick? I dunno how tf he plays like that 😐
He definitely holds the pick in a very unique way. Haven't seen too many other players use his technique.
@@DrewCreal yeah no idea how the fellow hybrid picks lol I've definitely heard him do it though
I’m 31:50 into the video and haven’t heard any didn’t yet. Pretty sure I’m wasting my time.
no Meshuggah did djent way before misha lol
Talks about djent but barely even mentions Meshuggah.. Such a shame.
Yeah totally the most influential guitar players of recent time... What a terrible joke 😂
We're talking about metal here brother, not Stevie Ray!
@@DrewCreal Stevie Ray is an overrated Hendrix clone and metal is an over saturated and watered down genre, maybe if the artists you cited stepped outside of metal then they would develop some actually interesting and creative ideas instead of regurgitating the same ones
"he call himself bulb" he doesn't. We do. Who tf you think you are dude?
I'm a dude that plays guitar and has a TH-cam channel, and I was around when Misha had his "Bulb" music up on MySpace, that was an exciting time.
Either he call himself a bulb or we do, still misha can legitimately call himself a bulb as the named "bulb" originated from his 1st band name (project) with his friend in 2004.
@@DrewCreal What a salty
Lesson be like: learn to play on guitar bruh
