Subaru Solterra - New Zealand Review & First Drive

- Subaru have released the all-electric Solterra to the New Zealand market and Gav had the chance to take it for a blast on the launch day.
The vehicle is now available in two different trim levels with the entry-level version coming in at $79,990. The more upmarket Touring version is $84,990 and has a few more gadgets and luxuries.
However, both are All Wheel Drive with two electric motors, and both have the same 71.4 kWh battery using NMC chemistry.
Unfortunately, the 'Sol' part of Solterra (meaning 'Sun' in Latin) didn't translate very well into English, as you can see... The roads were wet and miserable, but the car rode very well. The suspension dampened the road's undulations brilliantly, the noise insulation was superb, however the vehicle's acceleration likely won't stir the loins of performance EV-lovers.
A much more in-depth review is coming soon, including charging speed and real-world range, so hit the Subar- uh, Subscribe button now.
And if you're keen on cutting your carbon footprint, come and join us at Ecotricity, which is now New Zealand's only climate positive electricity provider! That means by switching today, you're actually turning back the clock on Climate Change, while saving money in the process.
Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it's not! Ecotricity is real, with really affordable electricity, thanks to it being purely renewable.
Head to ecotricity.co.nz and chuck in your address to see how much money & carbon you can save right now. It's that easy and it makes a real, positive difference for the next generation. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
When you first said 'Soo-BAR-roo' I twitched. The you said 'Soo-B'roo' and I relaxed. Then you committed to using both pronunciations and YOU ACTUALLY DID. Very very nice work Mr Spud.
Su ba ru 😂
@@LadAussie"Translate to English" 😅😅
The Japanese say 'S-Bar-oo'.
I test drove a Solterra yesterday. I usually drive a Subaru MY18 STI. Solterra has a pleasing take off and handling on the open road as well as great agility around town at round-abouts, in heavy traffic, and up and down windy hills. Quiet inside and finishing is nice. Don’t miss a glove box, there’s heaps of other options. Range is good, regenerative braking. Cameras for parking etc are amazing. Intuitive controls going from a 6 speed manual straight to an EV. Loved it ❤
Wot, no "seated heats"? ;-) Love your reviews, Gav. Not a huge fan of urban assault vehicles but you always make it entertaining nonetheless.
Gav crushing it again. Legend.
Thanks for doing the off road test and charging review as those difficult to assess on a city test drive.
Agreed on the interior colours! I've got an older Outback with the coffee/beige interior and I absolutely adore it. I also like what some cars are doing with the colourful interiors but brown or beige interiors are super underrated.
I spent a few years on the FIA Technical Commission. The Japanese repesentative always called them 'soo-BAR-roo', with the emphasis on the second syllable..basically s'bar-oo.
In most Japanese words that end in "U", the last U is almost silent or is very short
Great review as always, thank you!
Any chance of you reviewing th Volvo EX30 anytime soon?
Thanks
As a kiwi I'm not comfortable with compliments - could you phrase it in an insult instead? 😄Thank you though, that's kind. The EX30 is booked in! Gonna be a few weeks but I'm really keen on it. It's just such a cool looking little car. -Gav
@@EcotricityNZ ok… YOU SUCK! Go get a real job and f$@&;&ng review the @&&:@@ Volvo EX30! ASAP!!!
😂😂😂
Thank you
You mispronounced the seated heats
Looked like Gav had a 'minder' in the passenger seat so perhaps this was done in a hostage situation and that was his coded call for help.
It's getting really old.
The car looks decent. This would sell well with current Subaru owners
Maybe I am a party pooper, but if regen has paddles and it doesn't have one pedal driving it's an automatic deal breaker.
I never had problems with my model 3 voice control it always recognised what I asked. I had it set to British. The new model 3 has a better speaker system than the old model 3 and actually has 9 speakers instead of 7 and has been upgraded with a subwoofer which the old model 3 never had. I have heard both as I had the old model and have since test driven the new model 3 and the stereo is so much better.
How is the back window when it rains since no wiper at back
Glad to see you had your traveling potato with you, Gav...this car is one expensive beast, it will be interesting to see how the Toyota bZ4X is priced when it launches here. According to Wiki this will be Toyota's first BEV to be launched in Australia/NZ. It's high time Toyota got off their collective arses and stopped mucking round with hybrids and hydrogen
I’d love to get one - but $80k is a lot of money. New OutBacks are around $55k. $25k difference buys a lot of petrol
I’m wondering if the design team said to the chief designer “Shall we put in a HUD or a driver’s display?” And his answer was “Yes.” So they stuck it halfway between. Better than no display at all (cough) Tesla (cough) I guess.
Agree
Too bloody dear !!!!!!!!!!
I just can't see how people would choose this over a polestar or Tesla
let's GO LET'S GO
Aotearoa spends something like $8 - $9 billion per year on on petrol and diesel. A large portion of that goes to Russia.
The fronts on some of these electric cars do not seem to have been designed for maximum energy efficiency .
Did you say ‘heated seats’ ???
So wrong. They also spelled Subararbauburu wrong in the description.
Yeah, terrible slip up.
I came here to say the same thing. WTF are Heated Seats? SEATED HEATS or nothing, I will die on this hill!
I guess being aimed at a more traditional consumer, it has heated seats. Only ENTHUSIASTS get Seated Heats!
Wtf seated heats please
I see you have a pax!
Now before i watch this are you going to tell us how many lemons fit in the glove box etc?
Current forester owner here...As much as I would like to love this car, I just can't justify spending $80K AUD/NZD on this package--especially given the pricing of Ioniq 5 Extended Range AWD and knowing BYD Seal U is coming very soon
The Ioniq extended range (Entry) 73 kWh AWD is listed at $95,990 from a Wellington dealer? So about $20,000 more? I am missing something here?
@@miekevandamcontemporaryjew5041 I’m referring to AUS pricing (didn’t realise Ioniq 5 costs that much more in NZ! Ioniq 5 Extended Range AWD starts at AU$80500). Solterra is priced much closer for the two markets.
@@CatsNeverFly - Ah thanks. Yes Hyundai's are a rip off over here in NZ - the guys who own the dealership rights have ramped up the costs massively. If you are in NZ the Subaru is actually priced pretty much as the cheapest AWD SUV on the market at the moment. we test drove one today - pretty decent car.
I don't care about the fartment, more so about V2L and space for a spacesaver, a word that is more challenging to mangle!
Soo-Bar-roo is the correct English pronunciation. Spud up!
I don’t think I’ve heard anyone pronounce it “Soo-BAR-oo” in fifty years. Maybe it’s a NZ vs USA thing.
It's how jap say it
Take it from s'BA-roo noo zilund how to officially pronounce it th-cam.com/video/D0kLBYZgCqM/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Gavin, I've never heard it called anything other than Sue-Bar-Roo anywhere in Oz, the UK or Europe.
Also, Mac-E, not Mark-E for the Ford Mach E.
It's alright though, you're a Kiwi, so we don't expect much in the way of English 😂.
This is getting out of control...
How on earth is an average earning person able to afford an EV these days?? 80K for an entry lvl electric impreza???!!! Whaaaat!!.
All the other once affordable car manufacturers are doing it! Toyota, nissan, mitsi, kia, hyundai, you name it. All their new EV, PHEV, Hybrid cars starting from around 60k to 80k, absolutely out of this world prices.
Also, cmon Subaru at least try hide the fact that all you're trying to sell here is a rebranded toyota!
The interior is from the new Toyota prius and the exterior is the new electric Toyota BZ4X... 🤦
That's because they are making overpriced undesirable cars so they can say, "look! There is just no demand for EVs so we wont invest anything in EV tech."
Looks like a Toyota..... I remember seeing some similar car with a Toyota logo.
I know, I sound like a broken record but it is too expensive.
$30,000 more than a BYD Seal or $15,000 more than a Model 3/Y, for a significantly worse car in almost every way. The collection of car makes still in business in the next 10-20 years will be interesting.
I don’t know why this car exists, no reason to buy it over the many other far more compelling options. By the way my 2012 Subaru Legacy GT Premium wagon also has reclining rear seats and a storage compartment for the wagon privacy blind.
I feel it was a little to one sided. For that price, for what you get… is horrendous.
more like lolterra
why would you buy this kaka when you can buy a tesla.
Don’t buy one. Go buy the Toyota BZ4X instead! You’re service experience will be 100X better
Crappy Toyota
This car does nothing for me, boring Toyota/ Subaru design. 485 km on a charge I don't think so, unless you are driving down hill.
That’s a similar range to my ice car atm
80k and such cheap nasty plastics. No wonder the chinese evs are winning sales
Not worth the rip off amount $$$$$$$$ old fashioned looking.
Another over-priced EV. Noisy too.
another non-environmental vehicle
Fartment ? I have never had wind of that 🥸
Seriously though you kiwis do much better reviews then us across the ditch 👍🏼
