I never though I would own or like a Subaru, my Kia trans died after 20k miles and just didn't want the issues so traded it on a 2024 OBW and I freaking love it, one of the best vehicles I've bought. Like the look of the new Forester but need that XT engine!
I have a 2024 Forester Wilderness and so far I'm very pleased. While showing my wife the 2024 vs the 2025 she actually likes the 2025's looks better. Her 2015 F-150 is getting up there in miles so our discussion now is getting her a 2025 Forester Sport when the time comes. She's a truck girl but has also said the crew cab F-150 is a an overkill now. Please Subaru, bring back the Baja and then she can have both.
@@paulholterhaus7084 With the boom of sale of the Ford Maverick and the Santa Cruz, I think they would sell quite well now unlike it was when they were first released.
‘22 owner here. I like the styling of the ‘19-‘24 models better but this isn’t bad. I dislike that they are not offering lighter colored headliners anymore though… all black will make the cabin feel more closed in, and an open airy cabin has always been a hallmark of the Forester. Hopefully they preserved the aspects that Forester owners love (spacious, airy cabin and loads of visibility)
You would think that, but with Subarus greenhouse, it really doesn't, especially with the oversized moonroof. My FW with the black headliner never felt claustrophobic even after further tinting all the but the windshield.
I agree with you. Even if the car has good greenhouse, the black headliner will absorb more heat then a light colored headliner and may take a little longer to cool the cabin on a hot day. I have a black headliner on my Acura RDX and always notice this.
The black head liner makes no difference. I own the 22 Forester Wilderness. No more dirty headliner and I’ve not noticed any heat issues or feeling claustrophobic.
As someone who's lived both in the PNW and NE, there's really no comparison. When people from the NW say things like that, it's usually a reference to the fact that you can SEE the mountain ranges from everywhere. The ranges in the NE you can't really see unless you're in them. In the NW, you can often see more than one mountain range from any vantage point, as well as one HUGE mountain (like Rainier, Hood, Adams, Baker, etc). Mountains are just more present in the NW.

Thanks I'm keeping my 2019 Forester. Having almost every control on the touch screen is a disaster waiting to happen plus it being placed well below the line of sight just made it worse. Why? Touch screens rely heavily on visual cues unlike physical controls where you can rely on muscle memory and feeling. Remember, things can go south in a blink of an eye plus the one thing every (good) driving instructor tells their students: KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD.
Great that Subaru still makes symetrical full time AWD. Ryan your channel is great. We can see overall review and most awaited off road test and drive. Greetings

Same old anaemic Subaru 2.5lt motor no matter what Subaru say. Will wait for the Hybrid to come out to see if it has any more zip....better still a turbo XT would be a little more exciting.
I see the sky quite black on that direction. Everyone is waiting for the hybrid. Except we'll all get disappointed. Subaru's marketing revolve around their SAWD/CVT/Boxer combo. The problem is that this combo just doesn't get along well with hybridation. Their hybrid version in Europe gets a small 17 hp engine that pushes for an astonishing 60 Nm of torque. Whatever meaningful electric engine they put in the Forester, the CVT will just not cope with it without breaking. At this point, they could go the Toyota way and put a bigger engine on the rear axle but that would get away with SAWD and would make CVT pointless (vs e-CVT). No matter what they do, they are kidnapped but their own tech.
One correction: at 23:00, you said that the Forester has never been fast. Not so. The XT was/is fast. My 2018 XT Touring is plenty fast. Subaru needs to offer an engine choice for the Forester like they do for the Outback. Just saying.....🤔

This is the first roadtrip video I’ve watched, and now I want to see more. Really liking some of the changes in the 2025 Forester, but I prefer the look and smaller screen of the previous model. Just wish this thing got an XT model.
Actually the XT Foresters were kinda fast though the last iteration's 2.0 liter had a lot of teething issues (both of mine either ate valves or spark plugs). They got dinged ove "requiring" premium (actually only recommended) and never recovered in sales.
It's actually very simple for Subaru: have 2 engine options (2.5L NA and 2.4L Turbo) in ALL models. I honestly don't understand why the Crosstrek, Impreza, and Forester all get stuck with the base engine without options to upgrade. And no, the 2.0L NA is NOT a base engine, that thing is deprecated garbage meant to sell in "other" markets and for those looking for the cheapest garbage they can buy.
Lots of hype and pretty pictures. I recently purchased the 2025 Subaru Forester. When I got home, I wouldn't say I liked the car. It looks great, but wait until you need to drive it with rush hour traffic, it struggles to keep pace. It isn't anything like the 2010 Subaru Forester that I own. Save yourself and test drive this car on the freeway before you buy it. Remember during break-in, you can't peg 4k RPMs in rush hour when the aggressive drivers are in command. PS. I drive the speed limit and hang in the right lane so don't think I am lead-footed.
Nice! Just got a 2025 Sport and it is my first Subaru. Really like it. I live in B.C., just north of Idaho and Washington State. Where are these dunes located? I would love to drive down there! Cheers.
I think I will wait for Subaru to introduce proper hybrid system, because currently they are the best cars in the market in my honest opinion, but they are way behind on fuel economy and power ratio. I Mean you can get proper RAV4 that has great economy and power which has AWD in times of need, but if you get stuck most likely you will just overheat your system xd, great review tho! love the subaru!
When it comes to Subaru *styling* - looking like a Ford (or any other design studio) is a good thing. I still like the Gen-1 Crosstrek and Gen-2 Forester, though.
Subaru needs to bring back the XT and I have a feeling they are listening. The dual exhaust outlets on the back (just one is being used) kind of says that it might be a possibility we might get something like that in the future, I mean, I am being hopeful.
I think the new Forester is better looking than previous generation but the price is now the same as an equivalent Outback and the Outback has more engine options and more space. Great review BTW.
Great review Ryan! And thankfully Subaru got rid of the plastic TCV (Thermal Control Valve) on the previous generation and went back to the tried and true old school aluminum one with a thermostat.
They did...too many issues with the first two/three years 2019 to 2021 and they extended the warranty for those who had issues with TVC for over 100K miles or 10 years. They made some minor adjustments for the 2022-2024 so your car can still move while the engine light goes up where as the older model will suddenly shut down and you are stuck on the road. I had the 2023 model and hoping it won't be a major issue when the TVC goes out, just bring it back to the dealer repair shop for replacement.
I love the redesign. They changed what I thought was the worst part of the Forester…the front end. It just looked…to use Ryan’s word, derpy. The rest of it I loved. So the front end looks better now IMO, a little more modern and aero and sleek, but the back end which always looked good is very similar to the last gen. As far as the “take a break” and “keep eyes on road” messages, obviously I don’t know if it’s the case with this Fozzy, but my wife has a Mazda CX-9, a ‘20, it doesn’t have the facial recognition software. However when we road trip it gives the same messages, but they are based on time and mileage. So once you’ve driven a certain amount it gives you those messages. Might not be the case here, but could be I would think.
Should sell like hotcakes in Australia...these cars are subsidised by Subaru to increase sales, a Touring edition in Australia is $55k drive away in Aussie dollars but have seen them under $50k
Love watching your trip videos! So have you heard anything about another hybrid version of the Crosstrek coming in the next couple of years? I have the 2023 Crosstrek PHEV and I would love to see another entry along these lines since hybrids are now becoming the focus for Toyota.
Absolutely love your road trips vids man!! Wish there was more!! To everyone hoping for an xt version i highly doubt it. Would probably cut into Ascent sales and Subaru probably doesnt want that
Yes! Especially on Sport and Touring Trims! Subaru is scared that they would lose out on Outback sales if they offered the Forester with the same engine. Its their upsell strategy and they wont change it anytime soon (which is sad in my view).
my rav 4 will tell me to ,time for a break or would you like a coffee break but thats after cant remember 5,6,7,8 hours of straight driving.i guess its not a bad thing so you dont doze off.
I have a 2024 Forester Sport - 8 weeks old. I’m having the same problem with the uncomfortable seats on longer drives as I had on my previous 2021 Outback Touring XT.
We're very satisfied with our 5th gen 2023 Touring although I'm impressed with the 2025 Touring. I could swap but then I'd violate my rule of not buying the first year model of a new design. Thanks for the review!
Oh wow this looks like a ford edge or explorer. All previous foresters had a really specific silhouette and greenhouse…this and the tablet is a step back im afraid.
You are going east which you're going to the Rockies mountains. Which you're going up in altitude ( up hill ). Your are have bad mileage until you get over and past the Rockies ( down hill). You get better mileage.
Thanks young fellah - here in Australia I’ve owned 12 Subarus but now drive a Toyota Hilux (US Tacoma?) - it has more storage options because we Aussies like our aluminium canopies fitted to our dual cab utes (trucks in US?) - no surprise that the new 2025 Subaru Forester looks like a RAV4 now given Toyota own 20 percent of Subaru - unfortunately the new lines of the front and rear look awful and dated - oh dear what were they thinking - I stopped buying Subarus after they introduced the flawed CVT here in 2013 plus the factory oil leaks of the FA FB engines - the old EJ’s were so much better - I got my first 1997 Forester automatic to 425000kms before the camshaft seized - an FA/FB engine will not go more than 300000km.
HELP! Seat material (suede part) might be a dealbreaker on my touring purchase. I just saw it today on the car I have on hold. It looks like any wear and tear will show quickly. Real quickly.
So, in the end, how much difference is in this compared with Honda CR-v, Toyota RAV4, Volvo XC60/90? All do the same service, all have good and bad, why I should buy 2025 Forester in Europe? I like your offroad videos, but seems that all cars do the same thing. I mean, no one pretends that those cars are an off-roader, so what’sthe point? How we consider which model we love or hate? I drove Honda, Toyota, Volvo. Besides couple differences in comfort, basically all do the same thing, all take you safe from point A to point B. 🤷♂️
There seems to be a focus on the lack of power in the forester. I am wondering if that is because you are going back-and-forth with a ranger raptor. Is the forester truly that underpowered?
I think it is an absolutely fantastic car and will probably order one when it comes out with the hybrid model... what I don't understand is why they dropped the turbo 2.5 offering in this car several years ago. I believe Subaru should bring it back along with the new hybrid model. The standard engine is way too anemic for my tastes. I wish you would have videoed yourself passing that semi you came up behind on that 2 lane road to show how long it took to pass the truck if you even had enough straight road to pass it.
@@drivingsports Yeah... that's their excuse but, I don't believe it. In our area, they couldn't keep them on the lot. They were gone days after they landed and were not ordered cars by buyers. Mazda has no problem selling hybrids in their entire main lineup. I was told the real reason they didn't put them in the Forester was because Subaru believed it cut into their Outback sales.
@@ctclardy Believe it. They weren't selling that well, period. The same thing with the Subarus that recently lost the option of the standard transmissions. There were very few sales, but when Subaru deleted the standard transmission option, EVERYBODY was whining that it was no longer available, "I would have bought one with a stick", yadda yadda, etc. Well, they DIDN'T, and Subaru is not the size of a GM, Ford, or Toyota, so they can't afford to manufacture cars & options that don't sell. As for the "I was told the real reason" nonsense... show me a Subaru corporate official comment that repeats what you were told. Car lot BS - ALL car sales people with all brands spew this nonsense.
What mpg/average speed over your recorded mileage are you getting? I have a 2023 sport and getting 23mpg / 22mph /9k miles in the Bay Area. I feel like this is a bit low, and wonder what other owners are getting?
You had to plug in your phone to get the Carplay to work? I didn't even know you could do that with wireless Carplay. I've tried doing it and never had it work on my '24 OBW.

Great video, but look at how they massacred the Forester 😭 A lot of people have compared it to a Ford Explorer but I’m seeing Kia Seltos and Chevy Equinox. And still no turbo.
@@drivingsports but... They did make a fast Forester. ;) no one wanted it because the WRX existed in hatch form, and was a better performer... If the xt existed now, with WRX only sedan, and no levorg yet .. I and many others would probably have one over the outquack.
Can anyone out there that owns a 2024 Subaru Forester Wilderness give me your opinion on your experience or knowledge of its reliability and off road capabilities? Any other pro/cons of the vehicle is much appreciated. Thanks!
Uh, the forester WAS fast. It was called the Forester 25XT. It also used to have a manual transmission, was smaller, and a rallyX machine with an LSD and UELs. *sigh*
Vehicle prices are ridiculous. I had an 01 Outback L.L. Bean with a V6 engine. That was a nice vehicle. Four-speed transmission, but still nice. I do not like the engines with the CVT.

Nice! Just got a 2025 Sport and it is my first Subaru. Really like it. I live in B.C., just north of Idaho and Washington State. Where are these dunes located? I would love to drive down there! Cheers.
😎👍 very scenic route!
@DB-pb7ck In no ways I'm saying that RAV4 isn't capable, but the thing is that they tend to overheat in offroad environment
Looks like a ford explorer! Personally, I hate the redesign! 2020 model looks the absolute best!
When it comes to Subaru *styling* - looking like a Ford (or any other design studio) is a good thing. I still like the Gen-1 Crosstrek and Gen-2 Forester, though.
Are you stupid
I have the 2020 model. Like the redesign more.
@@maahdshahzad6550 You mean the 2025 design?
@@user-xb7dp4vu3r yeah exactly. I think 2025 redesign looks dope.
Subaru needs to bring back the XT and I have a feeling they are listening. The dual exhaust outlets on the back (just one is being used) kind of says that it might be a possibility we might get something like that in the future, I mean, I am being hopeful.
First like then watch!
41K is very expensive for non turbo/hybrid Forester. RAV 4 Hybrid Limited is 41K !
For comparable features you need to add packages to the limited, bringing it to $44k with delivery.
i guess we're excluding XT's in the whole "foresters have never been fast" thing?
True, should have acknowledged the XT. But that was a decade ago.
Would probably cut into Ascent sales and Subaru probably doesnt want that
Should Subaru have offered the 2.4 Turbo on the top trim?
Yes! Especially on Sport and Touring Trims! Subaru is scared that they would lose out on Outback sales if they offered the Forester with the same engine. Its their upsell strategy and they wont change it anytime soon (which is sad in my view).
Subaru has a nice turbo engine in the Outback. Just stick that in the Forester, Subaru! They used to offer that.
Yep - with the 2.0 engine. I'd like to drive one with the standard transmission.
Love our 2016 Forester (except the cvt). Like the new design and improvements. I'll wait for the hybrid.
my rav 4 will tell me to ,time for a break or would you like a coffee break but thats after cant remember 5,6,7,8 hours of straight driving.i guess its not a bad thing so you dont doze off.
Pronunciation coach here. Appalachia is pronounced App-a-latch-a - like a latch on a door. This from a local of the mountains of NC.
Thanks. I’ve heard it many ways. All wrong. 😂
8-Speed torque converter gearbox and a Turbo could do wonders for this car.
Thank you for doing a road trip video. Please do one with the 2025 Outback when it comes out! 😃
Great video work through the dunes and nice review, as always.
Half of the people complained about it ...I think all reviews said they thought Mazda looked better lol..I always liked Subaru
You are going east which you're going to the Rockies mountains. Which you're going up in altitude ( up hill ). Your are have bad mileage until you get over and past the Rockies ( down hill). You get better mileage.
I have a 2022 forester nice road trip car I have over 40k miles on my car but I did get 33 mpg love the car
Love the road trip videos ❤ with Subarus good work
Subaru loves you. I'm sure that pisses the TFL guys off.
Not sure if this was the reason but even the previous generation of Forester will tell you to take a break 2 hours from ignition.
Hate that.
My Camry does it too.
None issue for me. But then I'm not a TH-camr or journalist. @@drivingsports
wasn't there a Forester XT that had the turbo? I would think it wasn't "that" slow 🤷
They haven’t made that trim in years.
@@atmartens my response was referring to Ryan's comments that all Foresters have been slow, maybe you missed that part of the video
@atmartens 2018 was last year. Love my 2018 XT Touring.
@@KenCheng yes… but that doesn’t change the fact it hasn’t been made in over 6 years.
There seems to be a focus on the lack of power in the forester. I am wondering if that is because you are going back-and-forth with a ranger raptor. Is the forester truly that underpowered?
No
I think it is an absolutely fantastic car and will probably order one when it comes out with the hybrid model... what I don't understand is why they dropped the turbo 2.5 offering in this car several years ago. I believe Subaru should bring it back along with the new hybrid model. The standard engine is way too anemic for my tastes. I wish you would have videoed yourself passing that semi you came up behind on that 2 lane road to show how long it took to pass the truck if you even had enough straight road to pass it.
They dropped the XT due to slow sales.
This new Forester looks much better! Not sure I Would take it over a Passport though. Why did they stop offering it with a turbo?
For 2025 did they fix the thermo control valve issues from the 2019-2022 and the faulty redesign ones from 2022-2024 models?
I own a current gen Forester.
I like the new gen and might buy the hybrid version in few years.
How about a similar road trip in a Honda CR-V Sport Touring (hybrid)?
Can you shut that facial recognition off? That would drive me nuts!
Yes
You can also purchase a lower trim that doesn’t have that feature. It’s only on touring.
Thanks!
Thanks! Appreciate the review.
I always thought the 2.5L was a little weak in the Outback. How does it do in the mountains in the Forester?
The CVT is a dealbreaker
Stuck between 2025 Forester Sport and a 2024 Outback Onyx. Can you please help? Considering overall drive, quality/quantity of features, etc.
If no financial difference, what would you pick?
Fun fact: the “short” Appalachian Mountains run from Northern Georgia to the Scottish Highlands. If you’re into geography.
Still short! 😂
@@drivingsports They’re legs/torso proportionate.
Would love to purchase one but Not enough power…… I have the outback 3.6L and can’t give it up
Great video, but look at how they massacred the Forester 😭 A lot of people have compared it to a Ford Explorer but I’m seeing Kia Seltos and Chevy Equinox. And still no turbo.
23:02 "And a Forester has never been fast." Don't tell that to the XT folks... (And I think you should know better, Ryan). ;)
The model discontinued a decade ago because nobody was buying them. 😂
@@drivingsports but... They did make a fast Forester. ;) no one wanted it because the WRX existed in hatch form, and was a better performer... If the xt existed now, with WRX only sedan, and no levorg yet .. I and many others would probably have one over the outquack.
Did Subaru add audible alert to the blind spot system??
I’d love to see a test of the new Z71 Chevy Traverse if you get the chance. I know it’s not “just” a sticker pack, but is it worthy of the Z71 badge?
We have a request in.
Can anyone out there that owns a 2024 Subaru Forester Wilderness give me your opinion on your experience or knowledge of its reliability and off road capabilities? Any other pro/cons of the vehicle is much appreciated. Thanks!
See the videos on this channel. The Forester Wilderness is more capable than any other CUV with the exception of the Bronco Sport Badlands.
Cool video…
Uh, the forester WAS fast. It was called the Forester 25XT. It also used to have a manual transmission, was smaller, and a rallyX machine with an LSD and UELs. *sigh*
Subaru evolves every year.
I hope you have breaks 😂 13:49
whats with the flag,do you have to use them,is it for safety for other people to see you or for rescue if you get stuck or break down.
It’s required so people can see you over dunes.
Vehicle prices are ridiculous. I had an 01 Outback L.L. Bean with a V6 engine. That was a nice vehicle. Four-speed transmission, but still nice. I do not like the engines with the CVT.
H6, not V6, but yeah, that was loaded.
