Hi Tom. Happy new year. It’s such a fine work you do. Can’t wait to see the end result. I just can’t say how much you inspire me to get out in my garage and get started on my old Volvo 445 from 1958. If you havn’t seen it then take a look on “trev’s blog” here on youtub, he is so cool and a true master in body work. My best wishes for you and yours in 2020.

Thank you and I'm so happy to hear that you are starting your own project. Doesn't hurt to try and if you get stuck just ask for help. Tons of people like Trev who can help! Happy New year!

I would look for a 78 or newer. The bodies are galvanized and not as rusty as the earlier cars.

I’m late again today, I’ve been out in the garage most of the day, I should be ready to spray some epoxy myself. Awesome as usual!

Once it's painted, I will take a big breath and then focus on making it driveable. My goal has always been to have a driver for under $10k including the price of the car. I will do an update video very soon. I think the painting materials may have pushed me over budget????

@@GarageTimeAutoResto Finish paint (Glasurit 22) was the single biggest expense for my DIY build. Over $2k, but for a '72 Tangerine Orange I didn't want to skimp and then be disappointed in the outcome.

@@jg9112003 Great year and color👍 I don't blame you for spending up. My basecoat is only $240/gallon but when I add up the clear, primers, undercoat, cleaners, etc it's over $1k

Good job, Tom. I'm interested to see how the dolphin glaze goes. I probably should have used that.

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto

It's kind of a cross between body filler and primer that you spread easily. I'm lazy and don't want to clean the spray gun again!

The mixing ratio is kind of subjective, but it always seems to work well. I give it plenty of time before sanding anyhow

I wouldn’t have dared use the heat gun on the door having finished the outside so nicely

If you had to do it all over again, would you have started with sanding the door jambs, and inside of the doors, prior to working on the exterior of the car? To me it seems counter productive to work on the exterior of the car, only to have to be extremely careful with the doors when leaving on the jambs for the end. Not sure though.

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks😃. I think the order is six of one half dozen of the other. I certainly should have fixed the driver's jamb dents before the exterior. It does require removing and reinstalling the doors one more time. The doors need to be on when block sanding the exterior. Even with the doors on there is still lots of overspray on the jambs. Unfortunately there aren't any major shortcuts that I know of. Paint and body work is just a lot of hard work.
Another aspect is motivation and trying to keep the project rewarding. Why do you think I painted the dash a few months ago?
Everyone is different, but the painting process isn't my favorite. My other Porsche was professionally painted and I will share that car soon. He did the exterior first also.
There are other viewers here who are more experienced than me. Speak up, what do you do?

That's great that you shot the insides and undercarriage body color. I know 'technically' the purists want black on the insides, but I think the flat black is so ugly and cheap looking. Body color looks fantastic there.

I don't get why you'd go straight to DG from epoxy primer when a single solid coat of high build would likely fill most small scratches and pinholes and keep you from burning through to metal... Seems like cheep insurance in terms of conservation of time. I love dolphin glaze I just hate burn through!
    Regards,

Fair point😃. On the exterior panels 2K is a must. Underneath the hood already has plenty of factory paint with a few deep divots that I didn't think the 2k would fill. The nice thing about DG is I can repair small spots without softening the edge seam details with heavy 2K coats. If I went to bare metal on the undersides and jams then there wouldnt be as many defects, but that is way more work.
