Great video. I learned a lot. My one question is about the "red box" you are using at the back of the amp. Is that the JDX or is that some kind of load box with a direct out.
I bought the passive reamp box, the blue radial box. I'm using a Peavey usb mixer, not a usb interface. I plugged the main out of my mixer to the reamp box, then the reamp box to my amp. That worked fine. When I tried to plug effects only, I hear the sound but it's not picking up the effects. Not sure if I should be using a mixer or I should be using an interface. Have you had this issue?
Yes I have some questions. Can I use my headphone output from my iMac into a re- amp box ? My interface doesn't have an output. And if I use the pedalboard from my DAW, will it have the same result as an outboard pedalboard?
I've been searching for a good tutorial on reamping for the last week. This is the first video I've seen that actually breaks it down clear and concisely. I also have that Hi-z input on my interface and questioned myself if I should just use that in place of a DI box. You answered that question for me as well. Great video! I notice you've got a powered active re-amp box. Is there much difference between that and a passive one? I like the idea of having the dual outputs so I can re-amp to two amps, but worried that an active box might be noisier than a passive one. I haven't seen any decent passive boxes with dual in's and out's. Thanks!
So a few things. Active is supposed to be Hum Canceling. The theory is they are also brighter and clearer but I think that's subjective especially since your interface is going to play a hand in that. You may be able to find a passive box with multiple in's and outs but I've never noticed one and my guess would be just like anything else with cable, the more you split the more degradation you're going to have. So with most other things cabled you're going to need to power to keep those signals clean. (Speculation on that part maybe i'm just not finding passives with splitters) and lastly Active is going to give you longer run distance if you need to have your amp in another room. Passives are said to have better head room than actives but i've found this active to handle my needs very well.

Awesome video, i have the same j48 and re amp box, but having trouble getting my guitar sound back into my 5150 3 combo, it does not sound good like it does when my strings and my pick up go straight in and with gain adjustment on my amp, i got a fairly good sound but nothing the same.Did i not record my clean guitar track good enough it doesnt seem to compare to real pick up on my guitar and strings, my guitar is charvel San Dimas Seymour Duncan® JB TB-4 unless i can get this to work I'm going old school.
It's a great interface. Honestly I wish they put more effort into marketing those. It's every bit as good as my MOTU IMO. I've been looking at maybe grabbing the Studio Capture for recording drums. Same thing but with 4 more XLR in's and its like $850ish. Preamps are clean and you have individual compressors and gates and such per channel. A lot of features!

problem with the jc48 is not enough gain to daw. mw1 studio tool is much better. OR anything with a LEVEL. Like the extc... I have no idea why you would just not use the extc in and take the clean DI that way and use it for out too.
Hey man! I have all the same gear. I’ve been at this for a bit, but do you find the signal to be a bit lacking when reamping? Is there a way to increase the level of the output on channel 4 on the octacapture here in your case to avoid any signal loss? Thanks dude! Great work!
If your interface has an instrument in you can record direct using that interface the benefit of the DI however is giving the ability to properly split the signal so I can monitor the amp while I record the clean signal. If i'm just plugged into the interface and i'm playing something hard rock lets say, I have to track it totally clean unless I split to the amp as well using the amp as reference.
@@mattshaffer3872 If you are to record direct clean into an interface you can put a plugin on it to hear the sound better and then take the plugin off when reamping. Won't be the same as the amp sound but it's better than hearing a clean take
I’m going to ask here since this mini thread was active somewhat recently and I am a bit confused/haven’t gotten answers elsewhere . So.. if I want to record my amp live, I connect my guitar to the DI box on “input” and then connect from “through“ to my amps input, from there I can mic/record my amp as usual and have the same recording chain as usual etc.. then I also connect the output from my DI to the interface and this is what gives it a clear signal correct? 2) if there is the clean signal going from the output of the DI to my interface, I don’t need some sort of “load box”. I would only need a load box if the through cable is going to my head and I’m not using the cab to record via mics ? So if I plan to always record my cab (initially and when tracking ) I wouldn’t need a load box right. 3) I see DI boxes with two inputs but those are not really necessary for guitar unless I’m recording two guitars at once I assume? 4)Iv seen people complain their mic’d amp sounds good but their DI split signal sounds weak when reamping, what would cause this issue? What would solve this issue? It seems they say they force themselves to record hotter than normal to try and compensate, is this normal? 5) essentially if I have a reamp box, I don’t need an interface with 4-8 mic inputs, I could literally use one Mic input to record At a time and re record over and over, without the need to do it all at once. BUT, would this likely cause delay and make everything off time running the signal back to the amp and layer the recordings over and over? I’m not super experienced with recording but from what Iv heard , sending signal from DAW out to analogue gear and back into DAW tends to add latency in general? So layering multiple recorded re amps can cause latency /phase issues? THANK YOU for any help. I just discovered re amping and have zero experience of it . I planned on recording multiple amps with multiple mics and wanted a tight sound without doing too many separate takes. Getting these answers would be a game changer . I need to be certain

The reason is when you connect direct to the DI box you're just getting a clean signal from your guitar. Which when you're recording distorted guitars is difficult because obviously trying to track something heavy and only hearing a dry signal direct from the guitar is tough . By connecting to the amp as well you get the amp sound while recording the clean DI track at the same time. Then when you're done you can route the clean signal back to the amp and make whatever adjustments you wish. Having the amp sound is simply for reference.
@@mattshaffer3872 perfect and thanks a lot for the feedback. I routed the clean signal back to the amp into the interface and I am getting an extreme high pitch noise like a squealing. Not sure what Im doing
Are you going direct from your interface into the amp without a reamp box? If so, that would be the problem. You'll have impedance issues if you do that. If you are using a reamp box, are you using one with a ground lift? Try that.
@@GearZombie oh definitely not. From the interface to the reamp box into the amp. I sorted out the issue by panning track1 which has the clean guitar input to output 1. And in track 2 which is recording the reamping signal, it has input 2 and output 2. Therefore the output of each track don't mix and create some loop which was the issue. By doing this you can hear what is recording in track 2 and make tweeks on the amp as you wish while its recording. English is not my first language but hope u got what im trying to say. Ok so I understand all of this but what I don't understand is how you convert the 1/4" output from the interface into a balanced XLR input to the reamp box. Do I need a special cable or converter? Should I just grab whatever converter I can find? Could I just use a direct box to convert the signal? Thanks
I Have a Huge question! If I want all my information coming back to my DAW in stereo, Do I need a Radial X amp 1 Channel, or do I need the 2 channel version?
Late answer for late readers: a re-amp box (like the X-Amp) takes DAW output via an audio interface and sends it to an amp (or two, depending on the model), not the other way around as you suggest. Can't tell if you're looking for stereo input or mono-to-stereo input, e.g. guitar to stereo track. Latter would be simpler with mono DI and setting DAW track L+R inputs to same hardware input.
DI boxes are ok... but not that useful often times. Your audio interface typically will already have an instrument level input. No one will be able to tell the differenec if you are connecting your guitar directly to the focusrite instrument input or if you are connection with 1st DI then Mic input. The only use case for the DI box is long signal path, where you are afraid of electro-magnetic interference along the way ... A guitar volume pedal such as the Dunlop volume pedal alreay has a Tuner output to tune the guitar. So you can simply have the volume pedal connect normally to your guitar and the tuner signal send to your focusrite... So for DI boxes i really do not see any use case. Definitely not worth the price unless you are a professional artist. The Reambox, that on the other hand is very useful. Converting a line output to instrument level really allows you to tinker with your amp.... But sure, different people, different oppinion, I simply do not see much value on the DI box.

Cable or converter either will work but I would get a 1/4 inch to xlr because converters can break easier
