  • Emoni Bates showed off his shooting skills and pro potential in front of NBA GMs on Day One of the 2023 NBA Draft Combine in Chicago at Wintrust Arena. 6'9 19 year old Bates is perhaps best known for being a high school basketball sensation in his home state of Michigan. He played a year of college ball at Memphis and another at Eastern Michigan. Emoni has been working towards this moment and should move up the NBA Draft boards after his performance. Check out these Ballislife highlights measuring his vertical leap, participating in game situations and lots of three point shooting drills. Bates finished second overall in three point shooting percentage.

The most impressive aspect of his game: his shot mechanics. His lower base is like Kevin Durant, with an upper release like Kemba Walker. So he will be an accurate shooter and scorer at the next level because he also has the modern stepbacks, snatchbacks, sidesteps, and hop back moves to always get his shot off. You can pencil him in for 20 points easily because he can pull up from literally anywhere.
What will either stunt his growth or turn him into a star will be his ability to defend his matchup, make plays for others and how efficient can he be on offense.
I would say his keys to victory during his rookie season are to be able to make at least 80%+ of his FTs and shoot better than 38% from behind the arc. More than likely he will end up in the G-league during his rookie year and end up starting towards the end of the season.
However, remember only two years ago, prior to him going to Memphis he was labeled as the generational talent that Wembanyama is today. No matter his flaws because every player except Jordan and Kareem had them, Emoni didn't falter in the spotlight. Memphis was simply a bad situation for him and he wasn't able to earn any playing time, not because he wasn't good enough but because of Penny.
    I'm rooting for Emoni!

It crazy how things end up to this point. If he didn't rush the process by leaving high school early, I saw him going top 10 easy. I hope scouts are not looking at his 2 yrs in college as a cap of potential but learning experience to further his development. He is 19yrs old with a talent of putting the ball in the basket. But at this point he going to be in the late first round or early second and with that mold, he need to be more efficient with his volume shooting mindset. I still see great things for him and he going to surprise a lot of people and make people remember how good he was coming out of high school.

I can see him being utilized like a young kd, start off games coming off screens and getting shots off offensive rebounds and kick outs from teammates drives. Get into a rythym then start isoing at the end of games. From watching his tape he seems very efficient shooting from the left side of the floor so have him come off screens on that side and iso on that side of the floor so when he goes into his step back and side step jumpers, he's on the side he's most comfortable. Have become super confident with his scoring before adding on more responsibilities like playmaking and running the offense. So a team with an already good point guard would be best for him to ease on in to the league.

With all the stuff that's going on with ja that definitely has to be on a lot of teams minds. He's good, but there's simply more talent in this draft. He'll get a good shot and since he's 6'8 and as lethal of a shooter as he is his window is wide.
