Hina Matsuri (Girls' Day) is a festival held for young girls in Japan on March 3rd (03/03). Dolls called hina ningyou representing the emperor and empress and their court are set up for the girl children of each family, and are said to absorb bad luck/spirits so that the children grow healthily. These are the dolls being set up for my sister-in-law, Yuka.

Usually after elementary school they stop, but in our case my mother-in-law really likes displaying the dolls even though Yuka is grown up. Yuka is 20. :)

In Japan: We set up these dolls to protect our daughters from illness and bad fortune.
In America: We set up these dolls, because we are filming a horror movie here.

I don't think it would matter unless you're trying to be a model or something :) It's true that girls in Japan don't want to get scars but people don't think of you poorly even if you have scars. I think most of them would sympathize with you.

It's a really nice tradition. Is Hina Matsuri a more cultural or religious holiday? If its mostly cultural, then does that means that Christians that are considered part of the 1 percent of Japan's population or others that don't practice the Shinto or Buddhist religions could celebrate it too?

I find it interesting how some people say they admire Japanese culture and at the same time do not value the culture of their own country and their ancient religious traditions.
Perhaps the fact that Christianity carries such a strong sense of sin if you embrace traditional elements from other traditions, including Christianity itself, contributed to this.
The new Protestant Christianity (The Christianity of Show Business and Financial Prosperity) from the United States killed much of the religious traditions of Catholicism in Brazil. So we fell in love with Japan, which was not afraid to appear strange and even bizarre in the face of the purely practical life that has become Western life.

when the girls grow up what becomes of the dolls ? is it possible for dolls to be passed onto next of kin or the next young female descendants ? I have a hard time believing that such beautiful dolls like this would certainly be put into storage and never come out again just because the girl has grown up ; clearly your mother appreciates them a lot and it's nice to see that they still get brought out , but is what your mother doing unique or is it not uncommon to simply continue bringing the dolls out even after the children grow up?

so much work goes into these dolls.
i own a few myself. i love the meaning behind them too.
i have some Ichimatsu dolls aswell and there so fragile arnt they?
i also saw a cerimony on tv where they burned some dolls. i dident know what it was about , but i felt sorry for all those dolls and the work that went into them.
2 of my Ichimatsu dolls legs broke and i have no idea how to put them back on, there so fragile, that i just dont want to touch them now, its a shame >.

    A little random, but:
I remember a Pokémon episode where Misty and Jessie were competing in a Pokémon-match that was only for girls (it was some special girl's/women's day too) and the winner got a Pokémon-doll-set that looked a lot like these dolls. Misty also complaint that her sisters had doll sets but she never got one of her own, only the old ones from her sisters. Do you think these festivals and dolls were a Pokémon version of Hina Matsuri?

Who sets up this display? Is it something the mother does for her daughter or the whole family participates in including the girl herself? When you have a girl child do the parents go out and buy these in anticipation of Hina Matsuri"? Are the dolls ever given as gifts to new parents or to the girl child herself on "Hina Matsuri?
