March 3rd Is Hina Matsuri & Girls’ Day In Japan!

  • March 3rd is a holiday just for girls! There's also one for boys on May 5th. Learn all about it! (More Below)
Hinamatsuri traces its origins to a Heian period custom called hina-nagashi (雛流し"doll floating") in which straw hina dolls are set afloat on a boat and sent down a river to the sea, supposedly taking troubles or bad spirits with them. The Shimogamo Shrine (part of the Kamo Shrine complex in Kyoto) celebrates the Nagashi-bina by floating these dolls between the Takano and Kamo Rivers to pray for the safety of children. People have stopped doing this now because of fishermen catching the dolls in their nets. They now send them out to sea, and when the spectators are gone they take the boats out of the water and bring them back to the temple and burn them.
The customary drink for the festival is shirozake, a sake made from fermented rice.
    Episode information
GTV 23 "Hina Matsuri" Season 2 Episode 2
    Original Airdate: February 23, 2017
    Produced February 5-21, 2017
Recorded at Butsudan Studios and edited on my super new (at the time) 2016 MacBook
Pro with, of course, pirated versions of Final Cut Pro and Photoshop

This is so beautiful! And bittersweet...
I felt compelled to share something after seeing this and processing the feels that went along with it. If you'll forgive me, I have a personal story that I don't intend to upset the joy of this video or this very precious day...
So just a fair warning to anyone who wants to keep reading. If anything, maybe this will inspire or make this day more cherished.
As a quick aside, I don't know you Gajillionaire yet I feel you and I could be good friends. I love the work on your channel and all the material I see are things I love as well. I recently subbed and found out about you so I'm working thru your content. I think we're about the same age as well. And when I came along to this little gem... well, I had to comment.
I have a very beautiful daughter named Midori. It's a cute name from Japan often associated with the color green if anyone reading this didn't know. Even though I live in America, I visisted Japan a lot and had a great best friend from there where I learned about everything from Anime and Manga to Video Games and J-pop. My friend (Kai) told me about this day. And since my daughter's birthday was Valentine's Day (so kawaii) we (my wife and I) also celebrated THIS day with her.
My lovely Midori was seven years old. And this year marks the seventh year away from her. Something very sad happened and now she lives amidst the clouds somewhere, between Japan and her home in America, maybe with her favorite dolls and anime. She really liked Sailor Moon and some others, especially girls with green hair, as she would point out "Midori" each time. So maybe there is anime is heaven too. I don't know. I do know that I miss my daughter terribly... but traditions like this help her alive.
Thanks for showing this. I've found that sharing and giving help me.. and her.. stay connected and alive. So.. Arigato. :_)

You’re welcome! Actually as I flipped thru the tv last night the same doll pyramid was on tv as they have it on display every year! It might seem kind of strange along side my other videos but the original idea was to present culture along side games and have a wider space of topics to cover. Actually the channel I had before this one was nothing but educational videos about different topics in Japan for English learners so that never truly went away

I am American born Japanese, and remember doing cherry blossom paintings as well as doll making when I was younger. There are also milestones for children with 1 month, 1 year, 7 years and a few more being notable. Infant mortality was high in Japan, so was told tradition is for the mother and baby to stay home for 30 days after birth.
As an example, my grandmother was a twin. Her brother stepped on a nail and died of tetanus (she never gave an exact age but it was before 10) this was in the 1920s. It's also why we vaccinate our kids.
Wishing all parents and children good health 💖

They are VERY expensive, so each generation adds more to the collection.
Which means they put them away somewhere in the house for once a year.
Old farm houses could do it, because they usually had big storage shed for the farming tools, but I'm not so sure how the new families do it.
