When I got to the fourth grade, as did many of my Stovall classmates, I enrolled, not so voluntarily, into the Katherine Royster History Brigade. Mrs. Royster was our fourth grade teacher. She didn't just teach history, she lived it. Mrs. Royster made it fun to learn. She helped Granville County learn a lot about its history, right Mark Pace ? She helped found the Earl of Granville Festival. As one of the Katherine Royster History Brigade, which lasted through high school, I was one of many who annually helped clean the gravesite of John Penn, one of the three North Carolina signers of the Declaration of Independence. We also cleaned the grounds of the church John Penn attended, the 1746 St. John's Church in Williamsboro. Once in a while I'd get chosen to help dust and clean inside the church. I've always taken time to pray whenever I've been in St. John's. I'm currently working on an art series on Old St. John's, originally a Church of England, later Episcopal. So from all this, you can summize that America's Independence on July 4th has a very special meaning and significance for me, and I'm sure for others in the Katherine Royster History Brigade. Mrs. Royster introduced me to a signer of the document that started America. And through her, I got to know and respect him. Treasure indeed. #johnpenn #granvillecounty #stjohns #williamsboro #fourthofjuly #franktimberlake
