When I had my first alone nightshift at the motorpool of the SHAPE headquarters in Belgium we had to change a bus based on technical problems. A bus passenger approached me and asked: "Where is the bathroom". Based on my English I have learned at school in Germany a bathroom is a place where you can take a bath or have a shower. My answer therefore was: "We don't have a bathroom in this building." This was back in 1975 where no You Toube or internet videos have existed. I nowadays can understand Americans who visit Germany and are in desperation to find a bathroom since Germans are answering: "we don't have any bathrooms here".
Hi Jimmy, seems that I am the first to comment today. Well, my experience with speaking another language showed me, that every language has its own rythm and somehow melody as well. If you have a sensibility for it, you quickly notice, when you are not pronouncing correctly, putting the emphasys on the wrong syllable, or just using another word order. I think, the Beat/RocknRoll music could be developped in an English speaking country only. We Germans speak more in a Waltzer mode. Maybe you should keep a melody in in your head according to which you try to speak German. Or think of gallopping to be in the rythm. Pronounciation can be trained by singing in the foreign language. Of course, being timid to speaking in a foreign language, may make you speak in a higher/weaker frequency. You literaly wish to find the correct tune. 😻
Hi Jimmy, interesting subject. As far as I’m aware different languages have different pitch, melody, pace and tone ranges wich one only becomes aware with speaking more than one language. Because the culture shapes language as well every person studying language will improve understanding and speaking by enter the culture. And some of the expectations how to behave (formal or unformal comes to mind because of the „Sie“ or „you“) Also thought models are different. So for example I always considered a „Hummel“ a very different species to a bee, until I understood the connection „bee“ and „bumble bee“. So for English speakers it is clearly a subspecies. For Germans maybe not.

That is a good example, language is fascinating when we begin to reflect on some words that we have taken as a given.
