My goodness, does it get any better than this? I love it! Pure magic between all the musicians. You can feel it. Pat's fluidity and those cool chromatic type lines!
Methuselah is un bad mubbly fubbly fo shizzle, and check out basso pro FUN do Swallow digging deep. i feel so lucky and blessed to have crossed paths with these great cats. Love Always Hu Ra Kalam
Brilliant musicianship!,Horses for courses I Guess, music for me shouldn’t be Hard work nor need to be explained!,Jazz isn’t Dead it Just Smells funny!???
This is extreme jazz Darrell!! Extreme. It’s hard to like this first. Try an old Sinatra tune that’s jazz and might be something you’ll dig. People do love this though you’d be surprised!!!
nonamed _ agreed. The thing is his licks and riffs are so cool and his sense of rhythm so strong that he gets away with it playing always the same vocabulary.
These riffs were not new back then, all would be developed into later compositions, but it was also about letting his rhythm section stretch out & improv a little as well.....perhaps you missed that part
?? Really, Pat quotes the melody and harmonic form throughout. Can you elaborate? You do realize, I assume, that the tradition of this music is to take tunes (Broadway show tunes, originals, etc...) and improvise on them in a unique way.
What you mean? He takes some harmonic liberties here and there but largely the changes are here, sure he uses chromaticism in his lines and superimposes other meters and creates those polymeric moments in some of his lines...but the heart of the song is there, including melody.
Pat at his best. Insane playing, rythm, articulation. I heard nothing like this, this is from another galaxy
But he is just playing the same lick in different variations through out the whole solo.
I love the dichotomy of how the melody/harmony/form is both followed but also transcended into free form at the same time.
Holy crap this is incredible. I first heard this song from a Dizzy Gillespie recording and the reimagination of that classic is amazing.

You've got to love Pat Metheny. Great improvisation.
The essence of great jazz guitar playing is just this........love listening to these three, reading some of the undeducated comments, not so much
Bob Moses is always so nasty and original
Love Steve. Love Pat. But Bob… WOW! So few like him.
Amazing version and amazing gig
Absolutely incredible version.
God I love this !!!
Pat’s all about flow. His vocabulary is limited but damn he owns it like no one’s biz! He’s a cut above for sure…
Splendide lush scales
Magnificent
Grandissimo Pat !
I think the club they played was l’Air du Temps in Old Montréal !!!

Great stuff despite some of the idiotic comments.
damn, i miss his old es 175 sound
Me too.
You mean this warm, bland sound drowned in reverb. Oh wait, that's his "every guitar" sound.
@@nacienlos70 hahaha nailed it
@@nacienlos70 I'd say wes in a magical cave not so homogenized like most jazz tones
They are cooking here
DAYYYYYMMMM SON!!!!!!
After his solo he looked around briefly appearing somewhat satisfied. He may not have broken a sweat.
Bob Moses took the best solo here

Pat just sounds like the coolest gay to me
Guy*
I don't think he's gay, but a guy for sure. Peace.
Iwas there. Miss these times. No cell phones or Karens or stupid influencers.
It's too fast for the song IMHO LOL. Great but I prefer it slower
I don't understand jazz, or fusion. :( I just don't get it.
D'ont try to understand ! just relax and appreciate ... listen

I recommend you Jazz Theory, by Mark Levine. Been helping me a lot in my way to jazz.
Then you're missing out. It's bliss.
Its about a conversaysh
i think metheny used his well known riffs way too much in this song.. many of those lines sound way too much like a mashup of his signature resources.
nonamed _ agreed. The thing is his licks and riffs are so cool and his sense of rhythm so strong that he gets away with it playing always the same vocabulary.
Can you play even slightly like him. If not don't comment.
Matheny playing Matheny? Gee! Who would have thought that??

@@estebansteverincon7117 great comment ! I'm surprised they didn't say he should play more Charlie Parker licks and riffs.
Pat is a great guitar player ... but this has little to do with this jazz standard ...
?? Really, Pat quotes the melody and harmonic form throughout. Can you elaborate? You do realize, I assume, that the tradition of this music is to take tunes (Broadway show tunes, originals, etc...) and improvise on them in a unique way.
This has everything to do with this song *as a jazz standard* and the way brilliant players have used it as a vehicle for improvisation.
I hear the song just find through out. Maybe you need to be more familiar with the tune 🤷🏻♂️
What you mean? He takes some harmonic liberties here and there but largely the changes are here, sure he uses chromaticism in his lines and superimposes other meters and creates those polymeric moments in some of his lines...but the heart of the song is there, including melody.
Came here to hear Steve Swallow. Metheny bores me. Nothing. Inaudible.
