When asked about Cedar Points upcoming 150th anniversary, CEO of Cedar Fair Matt Ouimet agreed that the plot that Mean Streak stands on has a lot of potential for either a "Meaner" version of it or a new ride to leave Formula Rossa and Kingda Ka in the dust.
I rode Mean Streak the year it opened back in '91, there was quite a wait for it. The wait was quite long for a few years after. Originally there were no trim breaks on the first drop, they were added on in '94 I believe. That was when it started losing popularity. The last few times I rode it I came out of it when a massive headache that I didn't have in those early years and would just skip it altogether. I don't know if it was because they added the trims or if it was just aging. I have yet to ride Steen Vengeance (I haven't been to Cedar Point in quite a while), but I hear it was one of the best if not the best coaster at Cedar Point.
First year she opened in '91, they used the whole queue, it was a 3 hour wait! It was fun then, no trim on the first hill. But it still kinda sucked. The first hill although high (161 feet) was boring due to the terrible drop angle. It was rough then, but OMFG this thing got wacky rough. The last few times I rode it I felt like I needed a Chiropractor. I swore off this ride and refused to ride (this was probably about 2004) it any longer. Really excited now though, RMC Mean Streak looks awesome so far.
It wasn't a bad ride, but it's not great. It's good enough for you to not hate it as much as other people say it is. Because of all its retracking, Mean Streak wasn't bad at all, but of course Steel Vengeance will be a whole lot better
how long ago? i loved it the first year it came out. there was one point in the line, in the middle of the structure, that there was so much wooden structure that it completely blocked out the sun. very impressive. by year 3 or 4 though, it was like sitting on a park bench mounted on 4 jackhammers.
Cedar Point: hey RMC could you fix Mean Streak up for us? You know retrack it add some more elements. RMC staring at the coaster: I’m sorry what? Completely redo it and make it a hybrid? Ok how crazy do you want it? Cedar Point: Yes. And thus Steel Vengeance was born.
+Christain the Coaster Guy Same. Once youve ridden it a ton of times, you get used to it. Hopefully GCI will retrack it or, if it gets worse, RMC the thing haha
Great review as always Taylor. I love how you never rant on about how bad a ride like Mean Streak is, but you evaluate it and give it an honest rating. This is the reason I love this channel.
Rode this when I was a kid and coaster-crazy. I remember being so disappointed. It's a beautiful structure. It just feels like the part of a coaster leading to the lift-hill...for the entire ride.
Alright, first off Mean Streak is a great coaster. I do agree that it's trimmed to death but that is a result of everyone complaining about it. I visit the park about 2 times a week during the season and most of the time of my visits are spent at Mean Streak. Mean Streak is a great coaster but it comes down to a matter of comparison. At the time it was built, there were no incredible elements that we have today. Unfortunately, as roller coasters developed and smooth steel roller coasters came about, everyone became pampered and riding a slightly bumpy coaster just seemed too painful for them. A GCI treatment is the least that I would like to see done to Mean Streak. It is a classical wooden coaster that was and still is enjoyed by many today. Due to RMC it can be classified as a dying breed because so many parks ruin their wooden coasters by having them redone by RMC which I am completely against. Maverick takes away from Mean Streaks line so that is an excuse.
I do like that RMC is building their own coasters but I do not like the fact that they destroy good wooden coasters. Mean Streak really is a good coaster. Henry is a close friend of mine and he, like myself and many others are not pampered by smooth steel coasters and like to ride a classical wooden coaster. The coaster world has evolved and due to word of mouth of all of these people trashing Mean Streak over youtube and other places, Mean Streak has gained a bad name. But that bad name is not true, Mean Streak is a great coaster that deserves to be ridden. And a little tip - If you want your ride to be less bumpy, sit in the front of a car and keep your back off the the seat back. That makes the ride a lot smoother. Please don't hate on mean streak. It is a great coaster that has been given a bad name that it truly does not deserve.
well, mean streak turned from arguably the worst ride in the park to the best. 99% of the public agrees and this same channel agrees. RMC is the greatest thing to happen to this coaster since it opened.
I agree with the first replies. I hate the fact that all the good, old fashioned wooden coasters are being ruined by RMC. Does EVERY friggin roller coaster have to have inversions? I'm not afraid of inversions, they just annoy the hell out of me. And why all the complaints about 'roughness'? The roughness is a big part of the fun of wooden roller coasters. One or two steel coasters in a park is enough. They mostly have the same layouts anyway. If you've ridden one, you've ridden almost all of them. I read a comment by a guy who said 'All wooden roller coasters should be demolished.' Well, now they are being demolished. And it's a real shame.
Just checking, you’ve ridden an RMC before right? I mean I sorta had the same opinion before i rode my first one (steel vengeance) and after having ridden 7 RMC coasters i stand with my opinion fully that RMC is pretty much the greatest thing to happen to old woodies.
Yeah, people who say that RMC is "destroying wooden coasters" has probably never ridden an RMC. Also, for people who say, "wooders coasters being rough is what makes them great!", well, I guess if you like headaches and mandatory visits to the chiropractor after a ride, to each their own, but you'll find many people disagreeing with you.
This was one of my first big coasters ever riding, I remember it being rough, It was a long ride, lots of variable speeds. BUT YOU GOT AN AWESOME VIEW ON THE WATER!!
Coaster Genius I could see them adding a GCI like mystic timbers within the next ten years. I think the next few coasters they'll get are rmc mean streak, a polar coaster that goes over 500 feet, a GCI, and a b&m flyer.
2.5 hours is common for new Cedar Point coasters during their debut season. I waited 2.5 hours for Mean Streak when it was the new hot coaster! Didn't regret a thing. It was beautiful at the time.
i rode it when it first opened.....i waited over 2 hrs to get on and you could feel the ground shake when went down that first drop.... that thing had no trims at all on it... and it vibrated so bad its like you could not see...it was truly MEAN.....
I'd be curious to know if those trim breaks were added in as a post OEM mod. I remember riding this as a kid in the 90s and thinking it was great. I realize some of these big wooden roller coasters had structures that aged poorly and made the track a lot bumpier. Looking forward to riding the RMC mean streak when my kids get older. I remember riding Mantis the first year it was out and no trim breaks existed which made it a great ride. Fast forward to a handful of years later and the trim breaks were on and it totally ruined the experience for me. Trim breaks are the worst.
I'm apparently the only person in the world who liked Mean Streak - genuinely liked it, as in would willingly go for multiple rides on it at every CP visit. It probably helps that I got a trimless ride the first time I went on it, but I thought it was a genuinely fun coaster that used its own architecture well, and it wasn't actually THAT rough, especially if you sat near the front. I'd ride Mean Streak all day long before you could get me on a Vekoma boomerang monstrosity or most of the still-running Arrow loopers.
I wonder if I would like it? I never care how rough a coaster is unless I get a headache, and as long as it's forceful, intense and has good airtime I could really like this?
I rode the Mean Streak last year at Cedar Point. I rode it a few times in a row. It bobbles you around and it is really not smooth. It gave me a headache and after just riding the awesome Maverick, Mean Streak just wasn't that good.
RIP Mean Streak I always loved it and would consider it one of my favorites at the park; nothing like an ole classic woodie to toss you around and beat you up a bit. I was the one dragging the rest of my family or friends to go in it while we were passing it by. I grew up going to Geauga Lake regularly and sort of became accustomed to The Villain/Big Dipper, and by the time we finally decided to make the "trip" to Cedar Point, Mean Streak and Blue Streak were nice counterparts/replacements to the defunct Geauga Lake coasters I grew up loving. Although its gone and I'll miss it, Steel Vengeance was the best and smartest thing they could have done to it.
Got to ride Mean Streak the last year it was open. Yeah, it was definitely rough, but I personally enjoyed the ride itself quite a bit and was sad to see it go. But looking forward to Steel Vengeance.
If Mean Streak were revamped by a firm like RMC, I’d like to see it be resurrected it as a better wooden coaster rather than see it get the “iron horse” treatment. Cedar Point’s low on woodies, and it would be cool if MS maintained the charm of a wooden coaster while delivering a more impactful ride.
I'd still rather see an RMC. Cedar point doesn't need to have woodies, cedar point is based off having the best rides and record breaking coasters. If cedar point gets an RMC it might be one of the best if not the best RMC ever.
I wouldn't be interested at all in going to Cedar Point anymore. In fact, I'm not interested in most parks anymore. They're all full of steels coasters. And steel coasters mostly bore me.
Meanders around? Sounds like a lot of my old rides, at least the end of them, I was so interested in making length that I forgot to consider excitement in the process, that's probably what happened to this one. I think if it got reprofiled that would be good, keep the same ideas but make them better, cuz everyone likes a good classic woody, if it's not too bad and still exciting. I think a track reprofile would be a great thing for this ride.
Can You Remind Some People That Its being Rmc'd? I watch this and then watch another video and when saw the RMC track I was like omg!!!!! Awesome Review BTW...
who'da thunk it would turn into the best roller caoster to date thanks to rmc tho. goes to show how a layout can be insane and record-breaking at the time but totally falls flat compared to what it could be
Love your channel but I disagree with you about Mean streak. Rode it 3x back in '95 and I absolutely HATED it. I still have flashbacks of those experiences - felt like I was thrown into a dryer and set on violent tumble dry.
Before they trimmed the drop the entire ride was all hell breaking loose and then accelerating the violence from there. Somehow it didn't hurt but I couldn't imagine how the trains weren't busting through the timbers. I especially liked when, after the brake run, the coaster went up into it's structure again and started getting faster and faster within the supports until the end where it needed a quarter mile of brakes at the end to stop the train. It was overwhelming and it made an impact. Then they trimmed the drop and the ride has been the walking dead since. I still like it's size though, and it's location.
I think an RMC makeover wouldn't be too bad, but I think what would be better would be if Gravity Group completely re-profiles it with airtime hills and more over banked turns. Maybe throw in a corkscrew like they did with Hades. Also, TIMBERLINERS.
What's the longest and shortest line in the park? I. Going to this summer so I need to know what has the shortest line so I ride it at night (even shorter line) And longest so I know to go on it the earliest
Meanstreak is a ride, which in my eyes, is just not finished yet. It needs a treatment sometime, and I am sure it will happen sometime. Besides that it looks great, the ride kinda sucks so I think GCI or RMC have there plans already completed, it is just the wait on cedar point to decide when to do something with that ride.
I thought Mean Streak was okay. My score of it is a 5/10, and here why. It has a good drop, it's fast, and the duration is long. It could be better. It was rough, but I have been on a rougher coaster. The trim breaks on the drop does take away the experience, though. Next time I go to Cedar Point, I'll still ride it.
I don't think GCI refurb would be enough because it need a pretty radical layout change. This ride doesn't spend enough time close to the ground. Just tweaking it and removing trims will still leave a boring ride :/
I enjoyed mean streak. I thought the air time was good. The only reason I rode was because it closed in a week. Me and my friend were almost standing up because airtime.
Now I have never ridden this ride but according to the get to the point videos in the 1990's this didn't have trims and it looked insanely fast and exciting. I agree if they make it a bit smoother and get rid of the trims it would be awsome.
10 years ago this was a decent coaster. It has really gotten rough since then. Id hate to see this go because this has a good layout and very good stats. Maybe it will get a GCI treatment. Its sad that cedar point, americas rock n roller coast, has two wooden roller coasters that in my opinion are not that great.
I thought the ride was boring af honestly. Blue streak was more enjoyable because it had some air time. I think they should either RMC it or just tear it down.
The line for Rougarou, at least in my experience, has never been long or 'decent', and neither was the line for Mantis before it as the stand-up trains neared their retirement. Also, I do believe that Mean Streak's position in the park prior to Steel vengeance in part had to do with how dead it was. Cedar Point is my home park (I've been there at least over 30 times) and I still always had a hard time just finding the area to get to Mean Streak lol. Whereas the rest of the park kind of flows and it's easy to find the entrance to every ride (with the exception of some areas of FrontierTown), Mean Streak was not easy to stumble upon. But yes, the majority of its criticism still (and rightfully so) came from its ricketiness. However, with Steel Vengeance finally livening up the area again and with CP's renovations, I'm super excited to see how it's going to look! :)
IMO I feel CP will never give this coaster the GCI treatment because of it's overall layout and dimensions being too big for the classic woodie track, especially without MAJOR changes being done to it's layout and height. There's a reason why woodies today aren't being built this big! And if they are, get ready for a ton of daily/annual maintenance which yields HIGH costs, progressive decline in ride-quality, great chances of major repair/re-profiling after a few years of operation, etc etc. You mark my words... Being that Cedar Fair already has re-tracked this coaster recently, they will cut ties with the headache they get to keep a large woodie in safe operational form. This coaster will either be demolished or replaced completely with a new attraction, or it will be RMC'd. The very back of the park IMO needs a very strong attraction, and I believe sooner than later we'll know Mean Streak's future and fate because of that! Who knows, this year is Mean Streak's 25th anniversary....??
Mean Streak would be awesome if they took the square wheels off.
You are very funny
It's an old theme park joke.
It has wheels?

Thank God they turned this into the BEST coaster in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should do a top ten roughest roller coasters
One more thing did you ride the Old Texas Giant? Was it alright or did the roughness murder it completely?
I wish RMC would do a makeover, like a hybrid, but keep it wood. Make it be a typical RMC with all those crazy elements, but keep the track wooden.
That isn't a good idea at all. It would be bumpy as hell going through inversions and that wouldn't be fun
Ethen Nasrallah it has steel tracks lmao. He was saying keep the track wood

Hey Taylor, can you compare Santa cruz beach boardwalk and Castles and coasters?
Mean streak would be extremely boring if it wasn't rough. The roughness is the only reason that I ride it...
+Brandon Perkins Woodies were made to be rough. As long as they don't actually hurt you they are great.
It is only boring because it is so rough. When it was new is smooth and fast all the way through. Anything but boring.
It is an extremely fast, fun ride, but the smoothness takes away from it. It should run on wooden tracks. It would really kick butt then.

is the rolling thunder that used to be a six flags great adventure more rough than this?

Love your channel but I disagree with you about Mean streak. Rode it 3x back in '95 and I absolutely HATED it. I still have flashbacks of those experiences - felt like I was thrown into a dryer and set on violent tumble dry.
Little did the 2016 Taylor know, This coaster would be turned into the best Roller Coaster in the world...
The Mean Streak is kinda like driving a forklift over railroad tracks....but it's awesome.
Which do you think is more rough: Corkscrew or Mean Streak?
+Brandon Perkins Thank you.
Corckscrew
Before they trimmed the drop the entire ride was all hell breaking loose and then accelerating the violence from there. Somehow it didn't hurt but I couldn't imagine how the trains weren't busting through the timbers. I especially liked when, after the brake run, the coaster went up into it's structure again and started getting faster and faster within the supports until the end where it needed a quarter mile of brakes at the end to stop the train. It was overwhelming and it made an impact. Then they trimmed the drop and the ride has been the walking dead since. I still like it's size though, and it's location.
I would say Coarkscrew is rougher then Mean Streak, but Nice Video Coaster Studios!
Okay so I saw mean streak this weekend personally and they have done quite a bit to the track ^.^
I think an RMC makeover wouldn't be too bad, but I think what would be better would be if Gravity Group completely re-profiles it with airtime hills and more over banked turns. Maybe throw in a corkscrew like they did with Hades. Also, TIMBERLINERS.
You been on steel vengeance? Soooo good.
What's the longest and shortest line in the park?
I. Going to this summer so I need to know what has the shortest line so I ride it at night (even shorter line)
And longest so I know to go on it the earliest
+TheCoasterOfficial This, Iron Dragon, or Gemini
Longest: TTD
Shortest: Blue Streak
+Ben French TTD never has a long line. Every time I go it's a 20 minute wait. Valravn and Maverick have the longest lines.
R.I.P. Mean Streak EST. 1991-2016 at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio USA 🇺🇲.
Can you review raptor?
I thought Mean Streak was okay. My score of it is a 5/10, and here why. It has a good drop, it's fast, and the duration is long. It could be better. It was rough, but I have been on a rougher coaster. The trim breaks on the drop does take away the experience, though. Next time I go to Cedar Point, I'll still ride it.
I don't think GCI refurb would be enough because it need a pretty radical layout change. This ride doesn't spend enough time close to the ground. Just tweaking it and removing trims will still leave a boring ride :/
One of my favorites
It is a great ride
I enjoyed mean streak. I thought the air time was good. The only reason I rode was because it closed in a week. Me and my friend were almost standing up because airtime.
Can't you think of Boulder dash and the beast. Both dinn rides
Boulder Dash is CCI. The Beast is KI manufactured.
They were not built by dinn
+CoasterRadio ™ but the beast was made by Curtis d summers who was a founder of dinn
Safe to say that RMC understood the assignment
Coaster Studios, why was Vortex a day before this.
+Scotty O Why not?
+Coaster Studios It's Just confusing.
+Scotty O He probably wanted to throw us off. We knew his pattern so there was no element of surprise.
+Skyler Powers Interesting, I wonder if Taylor will tell us.
Scotty O Probably not.
I actually loved mean streak. But Steel Vengeance is so much better
I'm am going to miss it for some odd reason
Now I have never ridden this ride but according to the get to the point videos in the 1990's this didn't have trims and it looked insanely fast and exciting. I agree if they make it a bit smoother and get rid of the trims it would be awsome.
In my opinion I love it. I rode it in August on my road trip
Mean Streak had very long lines when I first rode it in 1992.
They did pull the trims after it’s retracking was done
10 years ago this was a decent coaster. It has really gotten rough since then. Id hate to see this go because this has a good layout and very good stats. Maybe it will get a GCI treatment. Its sad that cedar point, americas rock n roller coast, has two wooden roller coasters that in my opinion are not that great.
RMC isn't affiliated with Cedar Fair Which means no RMCing this ride.
i love mean streak it is fun and i think its fine how it is and the roughness is fun to me
I thought the ride was boring af honestly. Blue streak was more enjoyable because it had some air time. I think they should either RMC it or just tear it down.
"bring in RMC". Well?
Rougarou was a walk on when I went last year
IMO I feel CP will never give this coaster the GCI treatment because of it's overall layout and dimensions being too big for the classic woodie track, especially without MAJOR changes being done to it's layout and height.
Considering mean streaks line is very close the Mavericks the "back of the part excuse" don't work at all
Exactly, that's why i'll agree that that theory most likely doesn't have an impact.
+Coaster Studios Son of Beast vs. Mean Streak coaster fight? I know SOB is defunct but it would still be neat.
+Coaster Studios Mean streak is closing in September.
