FandeJay MGS4 was the first game I went trough, but I managed to pick up story bits from the game itself, Ground Zeroes and the Wiki. I still cried when Octacon said "Snake... had a hard life".
+FandeJay I dissagree, gameplaywise, going for the more standard 3rd person shooter style, having a lot more action, it is the most accessible MGS game there is, out of the series this is the lost LEAST made for fans
I cried at the end of MGS4, i was 21 when i played it. This game is just so good when it ends you'll start wondering what you should do with your life.
I was wowed towards the MGS4 ending, when Snake is on his final mission. It evokes so much emotion within a video game, it's just like in a movie or live situation. Kojima is a genius.
Metal Gear Online was underrated. It was fucking awesome with a "great" and loyal community. It needed a lot of skill, understanding of the game's mechanics and most of all TEAMWORK. Too bad they closed the servers :(
im skeptical on phantom pain. as the new voice actor doesnt make me feel attached to snake like i was with the old one. im also skeptical on the game as a whole because unlike many i was dissapointed with the fiasco that was ground zeroes a demo you pay for. mgs4 is in my top 4 games of all time and is a behemoth of a work of fiction. i doubt kojima can top that truely amazing piece of fiction, but i dont think itd be impossible for kojima to make a great game. im looking for a better mgs4 which was already really good if they can do that ill be impressed. if they cant, than itll be yet another example of next gen and the gaming industry as a whole being a load of shit.
***** Having played MGS5 because a friend got it early i got to say it's an amazing game from the opening 5 or so hours i played. Kiefer Sutherland is great as Big boss but it does take some getting used to.
Yeah man! The problem is that you had ppl who were never into the series to begin with, never played MGS 1-3, pick up MGS 4 and complain about the cutscenes and story. The real question is "what did you think this was Final Fantasy? This is a SEAQUILL" lol Invest in the other ones so you actually care enough to want to know how the story resolves itself.
The best thing is though is that the gameplay is really replay able with loads of variety and options for stealth or action and there are great action set pieces and boss battles. You can always skip the cutscenes as well to get straight back into the gameplay.
when people complain about the cutscenes im like at least it's better than none like mgs 5. ps I love mgs 5 in terms of game play and the story isn't bad like people say but more cutscenes would have really helped it imo
I don't know why people bitched about the abundance of cutscenes. Metal Gear Solid, since day one, has always been heavy on the cutscenes and that's honestly part of the appeal in my opinion. It's good story-telling.
kpaschal84 seriously though, like I love the gameplay in all of the MGS games, and watching it change and evolve but still hold true to the Metal Gear formula (if you will) has always been great, but the story and cutscenes and characters has always been what's really driven me to keep playing the games. (Although I am extremely excited for TPP gameplay as well as the story, because holy fuck it looks perfect).
actually im trying really hard not to watch any Phantom Pain footage. ive gone into every MGS game blind and im trying to do the same with this one. it is SO DAMN HARD though
kpaschal84 have you played Ground Zeroes? I know it's short and whatnot, but from the footage of TPP that I've seen, Ground Zeroes is a very good showcase for TPP
+AlexADHD i remember when the mgs1 music ended as i was getting into it and i was thinking "that was a nice little throw back but ended too fast" but then i realized it was still going and the mgs2 music kicked in and as soon as i realized what was happening it became the greatest fight ever.
This was one of those weird games where i would give it a 10/10 but I wouldn't recommend it to my friends. And i love that they had the balls to say if you weren't there from the beginning then you shouldn't play this game. This is for the fans that were there from the beginning and it was AWESOME!!!
Fahad Ali Yeah, Phantom Pain needed to be more *Solid!* x) Nah, but even if I had been in it, I still don't think it would have changed much. MGS4's ending was sooooo satisfying! MGSV's ending was the opposite.
How's I'd rank the games. Story Wise 1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater/Subsistence 2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 3. Metal Gear Solid 4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty 5. Metal Gear Solid 5: The phantom Pain
+biglegoman1 For me i would put them in reverse order to when they were released. Mgs5 has some of the best gameplay I'vs seen, but boy does it lack in the story department
for me it's always going to be Snake Eater. at the beginning I was laughing at the voice acting and stuff, but by the end I found myself taking it all seriously. not many games can do that.
+Zombifyed yeah im mixed between 3 and 4. 3 was a great story with great gameplay that anyone can jump in one. 4 was great as an entry to solid snakes story, but it also doesnt hold up in terms of story for new people, you need to play 1 and 2. thats what makes it hard. 3 is the stand alone master piece while 4 is the concluding master piece to a long great story. thats how ill leave things for now. maybe ill pick a favorite on my next play throughs.
Matthew Etter oh i see. we have a pseudo intellectual here that deems others a joke for liking mgs 4. if anyones got the fedora its you. whatever problems you have with the game, they already sound stupid just from calling someone edgey because its their favorite. 4 is a solid game (no pun intended i swear) and is debatably one of the best in the series.
+A man with a knife if you do it to speed run it and skip all the cutscenes, you can finish it in less than 4 hours. (There's even an achievement for it) otherwise, if you explore and have some fun with it, it could climb to about 6 hours or so
The metal gear games are the greatest of all time, so many memories they came out at the most exciting time of my life so far. But my least favorite was sons of liberty, just cause less snake, but metal gear 4 was my last metal gear. I'll pass the torch to my nephews.
+kpaschal84 i think mgs4 graveyard scene was too long and didnt really say anything heartfelt :( but mgs3s ending was in leagues better, eva's voice over and dialogue and length was just perfect.
thanks to the Legacy collection, i have played through the entire Metal Gear Solid series for the first time and i would say that its one of my all time favorite series! i am now on Metal Gear Rising, which is different from what we're used to from a MG game but its still a lot of fun!
F Britannia i'm gonna disagree with you because i have played zelda and not found the story to be deeper or overall game better though it doe's has better controls than mgs1 and mgs2 (i haven't played mgs3 so i don't know a single thing about it's controls)
Connor Hines Battams Well it's just personal likings, I agree, mgs has better story, but it lacks one thing for me, the nostalgia factor, I grew with Zelda, and just recently played MGS, both are amazing games. And play MGS 3, it's the best one especially the last fight.
The funniest thing about Metal Gear Solid 4 is that, I never grew up with a PlayStation, and don't recall ever seeing The Twin Snakes in stores until I went to used game shops. But, I did play Solid 1 downloaded onto my PS3, and did play 4 much later (both of which, with help from the Legacy Collection) and when I got to the Shadow Moses bit in 4, it did feel like I grew up playing the series. They somehow managed that!
I FINALLY completed this game tonight. Man…this franchise was a ride. The ending scene gave me so many chills. My jaw dropped at a big reveal and I did a quadruple take. And the long epilogue people were talking about maybe felt 45 minutes max. But man what an incredible game this was along with the franchise.
It's funny because I recently bought the mgs legacy collection played every single game including Metal Gear. When I start 4 I'm like "Okay so snake's gonna kill liquid and find some way to heal himself and we're gonna get more games in the future." But when I beat it... all those resolutions including snake, you realize "SHIT THIS IS THE END!" I love the way it ended, great finish to a awesome series and by far the greatest nostalgia bomb ever made. Snake earned his rest, Jack earned his rest, Meryl earned her rest. Every character that ever was in this fantastic game series has earned their resolution. Fucking Awesometacular.
Its like Mr.Jahns here is 70% film guy and 30% gamer. Why? I just had that impression with him after this since he doesn't want Rising ultimately for the fact that he feels Raiden had his resolution in MGS4. That's his opinion and I understand that. But seriously, Jeremy-san... Put it in perspective. Raiden deserves his own series after the positive reception he got from 4. 4 is a prelude redemption for Raiden and Rising completes his redemption to the fans he pissed off in MGS2. Myself included. You don't have to make a review video on it but at least give Rising a chance. It takes place in the same universe and its after MGS4. You'll understand why he had to return to the battlefield. Its a great game, has its own story and unique style of gameplay. It exists as its own entity so it won't deter our excitement for MGSV.
MGS 3 is the fans favorite but for me MGS 1,2 and 4 and the Solid Snake chapters are the best in the series. Solid Snake is just the representation of The Boss's speech in MGS3 of loyalty to the mission and her will.
A total of 74 songs are available to listen to on Snake's iPod. Almost every time snake has a smoke in a cut-scene there is a no smoking sign and a stationary ashtray (excluding Snake's portable ashtray). This is the first Metal Gear Solid (1998) video game series ever where at one point of the scene you can control the Metal Gear and fight the enemies and a boss at that specific scene. All the previous Metal Gear games only involves fighting against the Metal Gears of their respective series. This installment is the first game where the part of Liquid is not voiced by actor Cam Clarke. Clarke portrayed Liquid Snake in the original MGS under the name James Flinders, then again in MGS 2: Sons of Liberty and finally in MGS Twin Snakes. (His voice can however be heard in this game, if Snake kills too many people and his psyche gage drops too low.) Contains the widest assortment of weapons usable in any of the Metal Gear games. A total of 70 different weapons can be obtained in this game. Created by the largest amount of people involved in the development of a Metal Gear Solid game (as of 2008). Four real life models were chosen for the Beauty & the Beast Unit's inner Beauty selves. They were Lyndall Jarvis (Laughing Octopus), Scarlett Chorvat (Screaming Mantis), Mieko Rye (Crying Wolf), and Yumi Kikuchi (Raging Raven). In an original draft of this game, the ending had Solid Snake and Otacon turning themselves in for the crimes they committed, and executed. Most of the staff vetoed this option, so it was not used.
MGS4 is probably my favourite epic conclusion. The cutscenes might be huge and the gameplay seemingly short, but every part of the game has awesome things that can only be found out by playing it again. The gameplay was deep, satisfying and varied, and this is the best of the saga, imo
I liked how they gave the option to play through stealthily or to just kill every living thing in sight. I tend to pick one or the other on each playthrough. It's equally fun both ways. And I definitely agree with you on the cutscenes. The series is supposed to tell a complex, intelligent story. It *requires* cutscenes and long conversations. Also, there's controversy about the different explanations of Liquid Ocelot? I wasn't even aware of that, and it never bothered me. Nearly everyone in these games lies, and I always just assumed the explanation of Liquid possessing Ocelot in MGS2 was just Ocelot's way of hiding the truth(or he didn't even know the truth himself at that point). And you couldn't be more right about Raiden's awesomeness(or Snake's for tha matter)(except for MGR). I loved his role in this and Metal Gear Rising. "You're immortal, like me." "No, I just don't fear death."
Precisely. If a Crash Bandicoot game started having 45 minute cutscenes. I'd be a little suspicious. But MGS has quite a deep story, a very cinematic experience. Those cutscenes are like fucking candy.
MisterCrowley27 Actually, Ocelot could really do all those "things" like putting Liquid's personality within him. He is the son of "The Sorrow" and he has that kind of "ability", for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, better play MGS3 Snake Eater. The Sorrow and The Boss are Ocelot's parents.
Well i think kojima is also trying to touch on the topic of spirituality.. "god be with you" was uttered by zero to snake as he dropped out of the plane.. in mgs3 all of the cobras had supernatural ability's to some extent , in mgs 1 half of them do... in mgs 2... only one does being vamp and the girl demonstrating some powers at the end . I mgs4 no one has any supernatural powers. Why? because Kojima makes it a point to tell us people have become lest spiritual over time and relied on science.
MGS is the best game ever. Hell, its not a game, its a Journey. The best story, so many great characters, and in a way... there is no real enemy besides "the patriots". Every time i play the final mission on MGS4 i cry my eyes out, not only because its so epic, but because i know the journey has ended. Long Live MGS :D
You sir. I must salute. I watched all of these Metal Gear Solid Reviews and because of you over the summer I bought The Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection and I played through every single game in that collection. so thank you for inspiring me to play the best video game series in existence and the best series I have ever played and I can't wait to play Metal Gear Solid 5 :D
You should play metal gear rising if you haven't. That game is insane. Pretty much the first five or ten minutes into the game and you're already slashing the fuck out of a metal gear while some kick ass heavy metal song is playing in the background.
I'm new to the series and gotten MGS legacy collection and man this is is one of the best series I've ever played. Although I haven't played MGS in my childhood when I got to the Shadow Moses part I've gotten really sad as well as when I see how old Snake has gotten due to accelerated aging. I think the one that hits me the most was the battle near the end when he was fighting Liquid Ocelot and you get these flashbacks from the past MGS games. I've never been so invested in a series as much as this one so far and I can't wait for the phantom pain to see how everything wraps up and come in a full circle :)
lol yeah they do sound like cows. I justified it to myself by saying that's just the sound of the various gears and wiring grinding away due to the force of their jumps and movement.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is a fantastic game, can't wait for 5. Recently bought a second hand copy of the GameCube Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes for a good price on Amazon and was pleasantly surprised with its condition when I received it in the post. It has the original GameCube case in mint condition, the sleeve is mint, so is the manual and the discs. It looks like it's been in a safe for the last eleven odd years, it looks new. Getting myself ready for a Metal Gear Solid marathon for when The Phantom Pain is released.
I think the button mashing made that scene all the more memorable. When you think about it, the game is pretty much simulating the fact that Snake's body is reaching his limit, but he knows he has to fight through it to finish his mission, much like you need to fight through the pain in your arm from pushing the button so many times. It's stuff like that that makes this game a masterpiece.
MGS4 would have been the greatest thing ever if you had played each game as it came out. I've been into the series since I was 6 (currently 21) and I gotta say, Chapter 4 where you return to Shadow Moses island was the most gut wrenching, nostalgic, heartwarming experience I've ever had with a video game.
in my opinion the stealth in MGS4 works the best. Yes you have tons of weapons but thats how it is you can choose yourself how to play. But the AI is better, the OctoCam really helps in stealth and is not like in MGS3 where you have to go to menu all the time to switch, also you get the tranquilizer almost immediately. I actually played stealth the most in MGS4 than in other MGS games or maybe in MGS1 a little more. The thing is I never saw MGS as a stealth game, more as Stealth-Action. You get rocket launchers and grenade launcher in the first 3 games too. For me MGS4 is the best of the franchise but the others are very close and all of them are the best this industry brought us. Kojima is a genius.
Chapter 1-4 I played it stealth sure I could go guns blazing but I played it stealthy for the experience. Chapters 1-2 playing it stealth while in a battlefield was amazing, seeing bullets fly by me and if you take too long and the rebels win the battle the pressure kicks in as they clear the building you are in, man what a high. Took a solid 12 hours of my life and I have no regrets.
I loved this game. Glad to finally see a glowing review. Who'd have guessed JJ would be as big as he is today. Congrats man, keep up the amazing work!!!
I feel like he really underplayed how good this game is. Maybe not from a gameplay standpoint but from a character and story telling standpoint this is as good as it gets. I know the general consensus is that Snake Eater is the best MGS, but I think Guns of the Patriots is the best.
The moment you enter the first helipad where Liquid Snake goes into the helicopter and the song The Best Is Yet to Come just rolled through.... I literally shed into tears knowing that the nostalgia overwhelmed me that about 10 years have passed since MGS1. MGS by far the best of any game series in my life. Nothing will ever beat it.
That's why i hate MG Rising: Raiden story is over after 4, why they brought him back to the field? they could have made a game with Raiden chasing The Patriots to save Olga's daughter...
well Kojima said that rising's story is Platinum's view of the metal gear storyline,so it's not cannon he didn't even put it in the mgs site timeline! And it's better this way, rising's story is bazankas
Yeah, the gameplay was a little boring, i wish they could have made something like Ninja Gaiden 1 or 2 from Xbox....that was a great ninja hack'n slash
that would have made ,sense , i love raiden actually and hate the fact he gets hate for some reason while the story might have been the problem but raiden for a character has and had lots of potential. he is SOO underrated.
HELLASgate7 also between that and the fact that they tried to sell us a demo I'm not excited for this game at all and I've played Metal Gear since the n E s days
That's not exactly the game's fault. And as genetically similar as they are, they're still two different people with VASTLY different ideals. I think they should be voiced that way. As different characters. Which, as awesome as David is...Kiefer is best for it I think.
i had no nostalgia for mgs, but i recently finally binged the entire franchise. i may not have had nostalgia but i loved mgs1 after playing and shadow moses in 4 blew my mind. it felt EXACTLY the way jeremy described and i even used the same comparison of going back to an old house. it didnt rely purely on nostalgia and still worked how it should have and that proves how well it was done.
MGS 4 is awesome, same as 2, 3 and of course 1, but sorry, MGSV is the best, I do miss the cutscenes, but it's my all time favorite and I have played the shit out of all games in the saga.
DABADSHAZAM hm... Maybe the story was shorter, but the pacing was excellent. I'm a reader and also a writer, and from that perspective, I felt the story was great. Sure I did miss the longer cutscenes, but the story is there. And when you revisit the other games, everything comes together nicely. I feel there should be remakes of the older Metal Gears. But knowing Konami, they will be made into pachinko machines.
**SPOILER** I didn't. I totally identefied myself with Venom. I am the silent type, you know. I felt he was just confused and angry. They call him Boss, but no reaction seems to come out. He just doesn't know what's going on and sort of goes with it; even if inside he knows who he is. I think psicologic instability is what causes him to go haywire and become a nuclear threat. That's a great character there. I don't miss Snake's small talk, at least in Venom's character. It gives him his own character and is not a mere copy of Big Boss. But I do understand the fact that some people were used to Snake's more dialog-happy attitude, however, it makes me a little sad most weren't able to capture the writer's intention with this character or with the story in general.
Tony Diaz A lot of things in MGS5 TPP felt unfinished. Mission 51 had no conclusion and it was shown that the game had a cutscene of that mission and they cut it own of the full game. MGS2 SOL Did this better, as it used the cut content from the Tanker in a cut scene when Snake was explaining the events of the Tanker to make you ask if you were really playing as Solid Snake's Tanker or Raiden's VR version of the Tanker. The fact that the AI Roy basically has to explain the controls at the beginning when you don't play the Tanker, proves that kinda. It had a lot less charm as well, having side characters who were mostly forgettable, had a soundtrack that was pretty mediocre, had side ops that were down right repetitive, the ending cut scene comes out of no where and overall unfinished game. There was even suppose to be a Chapter 3 and it was called Peace. Cough that up to more cut content.
All would have been great if Kojima would have ended the series with MGS4 GOTP, where he intended in end the series off at. Every game past this game was just milking the series for more money. That was what, MGS PW, MGS5 GZ and MGS5 TPP was, milking.
I played this game like, and I am guessing here, 80 times, probably. I have done all the archivements, yeah, I am crazy, but hey, IT`S THE BEST FUCKING GAME EVER! Okay maybe not the best, but it is atleast in my Top 5. I have mostly played it full stealth mode, meaning even when I could have easily killed everyone, I did not. I like when games give you different options, yeah you can play it like a shooter for the most part, or you can sneak your way through these insane battlefields without being noticed. On a different note, I don`t think this game is enjoyable for someone who has not played the other Metal Gears, you should have atleast played all Metal Gear Solid parts to understand what is going on. Put if you don`t care about the story and only want THE BEST SNEAKING GAMEPLAY EVER, this is for you too.
I gotta agree with act 4 being the biggest nostalgia bomb ever. I mean through out the entire game you have the flash backs but then when you're on the helicopter playing the first part of MGS in the old graphics, and hearing the audio clips made me smile so much through out the act.
I have yet to see a conclusion to a game franchise as satisfying and nostalgic as Guns of the Patriots, so...yeah. Every other game franchise I've had a strong connection with either tried to sequel-bait when it really shouldn't, tried to burn the bridge while you're still on it or left too many questions unanswered and ultimately left the last chapter unfulfilled. It also helps that the games prior to this one are pretty much must-own classics for any Metal Gear Solid fan, so it had a really strong foundation for that nostalgia.
JYJnKumi No, I've only recently got it, sadly. But still yet, if you game a lot and take a break from it it would be very difficult to get into that vibe.
JYJnKumi You can complain about your experience no matter what. If you don't like an experience, you have every right to complain about it no matter how recently you played it.
I followed the theory that Ocelot was possessed by Liquid as his father was The Sorrow, who was a medium for the dead. However I was a little confused after MGS4 as Ocelot claims he is only Liquids "doppelganger", so can someone tell me if this is right, as this my understanding of how things went down. The way I saw it was that Ocelot pretended to be Liquid, as he wanted to settle his score with Big Boss, however he is dead and only Solid Snake (his clone) is the only one he can settle things with, so he used Liquids persona to kind of bait out Solid Snake into facing him, as Snake wants to settle his score with Liquid (seen as still he thinks Liquid is still alive in Ocelot, and doesn't know he already settled things at Shadow Moses). I could be wrong, that's my own interpretation but I didn't actually play MGS4 as I do not own a PS3, but rather I watched the "movie" on TH-cam over a couple of days.
Well, Basically MGS4 shits on MGS2, but it's up to you which one you believe. For me MGS2 was the true ending, if you understand what the meaning was for 2.
You could have mentioned a lot more on this game for review purposes. For example, the graphics, even now, are some of the best in any game, and that was in 2008 and I don't think was matched until the release of Crysis 2 in 2011. The back story to each of the bosses AND how you have to defeat each boss differently. Like you actually need to be very intelligent to beat some of the bosses, especially Screaming Mantis. Damn, as a hardcore Metal Gear fan I could go on forever. I'll shut up now.
you can still stealth your way through the entire game even during the war zone parts but i loved that you can go guns blazing wish i also did the second playthrough!
Mgs is the greatest series ever. But why do people call games epic. No game ever has been an epic. An epic means a long poem, like the Illiad or paradise lost. Those are epics. People throw that word around now like saying the word "the". It really has lost its meaning.
coalch13 While it has lost it's original meaning one thing that is relevant is that the word Epic (in its original meaning) is a noun. Epic is nowadays (when not referring to epics) mostly used as an adjective. I think you are right in a way, but considering what I just said, in my opinion the new and old meanings of Epic are basically two different words.
***** Funny thing is that the term really applied to MGS 4. It is a long adventure that takes you across a wide variety of settings and has an enormous cast of characters and even more philosophical ideas it grapples with. It really is an epic game.
I am amazed by the amount of people that praised this shit of a game. By far, I mean, BY FAR the worst entry in the canon series: 1. Gameplay: the little chunk of gameplay that we get to play feels clunky and very ankward. 2. Story: ohhh what a fucking mess! As Kojima participation was forced, it feels rushed, illogical, with a desperate attempt to give nostalgia winks to please fanboys and oh boy the stupidity!!, Meryl and Johnny scenes, Otacon crying for a bitch he barely known, Big Boss still alive and sudden death.
I am a huge fan of the MGS series and I must say this is by far my least favorite game. Not only do I have to force myself to play this, Almost all aspects are just bad. Controls, Gameplay = awkward, snake is slow and CQC is ruined. Bosses have no character, die all the same way and have a stupid story told by Drevin, Weapons have too much useless info that make no relevance, I'm sorry I don't want 10 different pistols that do the same as 1 pistol. Makes no sense. The story was ok but not near as exciting as the previous versions please let the phantom pain be as good as 3. My rating as far as quality is this, MGS3, MGS, MGS2, MGS4.
The M4 did everything all the other assault rifles did, only better; and who uses all those pistols? Dull game. Boring Bosses. Cheese Story. MGS1-3 all the way.
Thanks for explaining, I did realize that about the story and the guns, however, the M4 really did everything just as good and was the most customizable gun. I'm sure you could play that way, however, for some reason I just found myself getting frustrated and rambo'ed my way through the levels. I was waiting for the game to end and the Big Boss death just made it that much worse for me. Thanks for trying to spark my love for this game but it didn't work this time.
You on drugs? MGS4 is a masterpiece based on my opinion. Plus, I disagree of you saying that the story is just "ok". The story is awesome and it fleshes out things nicely and unlike other games today gives you a very SATISFYING and touching conclusion. Especially, if you played the previous games. For me, MGS3 is my favorite, they are on the same level as MGS4, Peacewalker being my least. I think you don't know anything about the story. MGS4 is a masterpiece, it's the end story for Solid Snake and a conclusion for Bigboss as well.
the metal gear games are my favorite. MGS4 is my most favorite game ever. the thing is that i never played MGS1. i played through all the others several times.
Definitely my least favorite of the series. The gameplay was good, but the story wasn't my favorite and the cutscenes... the fucking cutscenes man. God damn! It's basically a 4 hour movie with 1 hour of gameplay lol. PLOT TWIST! It's not the last game :O
its the ending to snake and big boss's story. MGrising was just the continuation of raidens, which I hate. phantom pain is set in the 80's and is a little after peace walker
Mgs4 was the first mgs game I played, also first ps3 game I played. I was 11. Took me a few years till I was about 14 to muster up the energy to try and beat it cuz the story was v confusing for me in previous attempts but I loved it and have been an mgs fan since
You can play through the game any way that you want. If you want to go total stealth, have at it. If instead you wanna go guns blazing, you can do that as well. From about the Microwave chamber section to the end this game was absolutely epic and I remember having goosebumps throughout the entire section up until you finally face off against Liquid Ocelot. This game had a ton of great callbacks and yes, the nostalgia is strong when you return to Shadow Mosses island and getting to battle Metal Gear Ray while controlling Metal Gear Rex is so damn satisfying.
there isnt less stealth they just give you two options so more players can get into de series, players who already know the series and like the stealth (at least in my opinion) they are gonna try to get the bbe, and there is also the option run and gun wich can be a pain in the ass in higher dificulties
I don't really agree with the whole "not as good because there is less stealth" thing. if you wanted to you could use stealth throughout the entire game, just like the others. it just took some effort. I made sure the rebels saw me blow up a tank in the first area of the game. then I just snuck around and quietly helped them from the sidelines throughout the rest. theres really only 2 parts of the game where you were forced to not use stealth (riding Eva's motorcycle and fighting with Rat Patrol) and the other games had these moments too. I tried to only use silenced weapons the whole time and, even though I helped the rebels get out of bad situations alot, it still felt like an MGS game. im more used to the L1 R1 system anyway so I enjoyed this one just as much as the others. plus the nostalgia factor was AMAZING to me
Here's the whole ocelot thing explained: Mgs2: he uses liquids hand and is this directly possessed by liquid, hence the voice. Mgs4: Ocelot needs some level of control so he gets rid of liquids hand and gets a robot one. He then hypnotised himself to be like liquid (and during the final fight, he slowly turns back into Revolver Ocelot)
Honestly, it's amazing. The gunfire and screams, the sound of the horror of the battlefield make an incredible impact and is perfect for this game, it's better than a soundtrack. MGS4 also has more variety than the other Metal Gears, giving the player an ipod to add classic tracks to your mission, upgrading the shooting mechanics so you can go head on with the enemy, all while still encouraging stealth, and still staying true to the series' roots. roots. Flat out amazing.
Purchase MGS1 from PSN store. Play it. Finish it. Purchase MGSHD collection which contains MGS3, MGS2, MGS Peace walker. Play them in the order listed. Then get MGS4 and Enjoy! It might take you a couple of months but it will be worth it. The longer you wait between games the better the final experience will be.not only did it remind me of previous games but of my childhood and teen years that I spent playing each 1. It transported me back in time. From the late 90's till now, boy what a trip.
***** I really like your fascination with the Metal Gear series seeing as movies are your main thing. Reminds me of myself, I'm not exactly a "hardcore gamer" I can always respect a good game but I am a diehard MGS fan to the core! I fucking love everything about it so it's quite refreshing to see you show that same love to the franchise. Keep up the badass reviews man i'm really enjoying them! :)
Just awesome, feel so nostalgic playing it, perfect way to end a perfect series. I still think this series are so underrated and deserve way more sales than already has
MGS4 was actually the first MGS game I played and when I did play it I understood jack-all in terms of plot, but I was so intrigued by the game that I bought the HD collection and the original MGS1 and decided to play them in order to understand things. I'm glad I did. Metal Gear Solid is one of the greatest videogame series ever made if not THE greatest.
I never noticed it was less stealth. The action around me actually contrasted nicely with my specific mission and character. War had changed. People were killing each other. And here i am, an old war hero, still stuck in the old ways. I loved the stealth. I also didnt mind the cutscenes. However, not enough gameplay. Only two missions are all out gameplay. The rest are just cutscene after cutscene. Overall, though, perfect conclusion
Dude, you should really do some voice acting! By the way, great reviews, I'm playing the MGS saga for the first time and watching these videos after playing the games give me quite a broad perspective of things.
MGS has always had action segments, ever since MGS1, hence the "action" in "tactical espionage action". Yes, this game may have a bit more action, but all acts had stealth, and the action works perfectly in this game. I thought stealth in the middle of a battlefield was amazing, and was impressed by how well the areas were designed and how well the concept worked. That's what I love about MGS, every game is different, while managing to be consistent.
Spoilers: Don't read if you wanna see for yourself. But you can't forget the awesome boss fight between Snake and Ocelot and how that turned out. With the music and then the health bar from the other mgs games and shit and then when Ocelot died and he does his little signature hand thing. It was the best boss fight in mgs4 and I loved how it turned out.
I keep trying to get back into the Metal Gear Solid franchise. I don't have a beef with cut scenes in general, but there's so much of it that's repeated (at least in the parts that I've played). When I'm actually able to get into the game, I find myself having a GREAT time, but having to stop every few minutes because some other character needs to explain to me again that 'war is bad' just kills it for me.
Thing with MGS4 is that it was made 100% made for the fans. So for many people, it was confusing, but for fans...
MAN, what a ride!!!
FandeJay MGS4 was the first game I went trough, but I managed to pick up story bits from the game itself, Ground Zeroes and the Wiki. I still cried when Octacon said "Snake... had a hard life".
+CookieGuy dude Ik! That got to me too.
+FandeJay Not really, pretty much everyone was like WTF? The first playthrough lol.
+FandeJay I dissagree, gameplaywise, going for the more standard 3rd person shooter style, having a lot more action, it is the most accessible MGS game there is, out of the series this is the lost LEAST made for fans
Michel van der Molen MGS V fits that description 10 times better.
I cried at the end of MGS4,
i was 21 when i played it.
This game is just so good when it ends you'll start wondering what you should do with your life.
Wait for MGS 5 XD
Like a baby.
same
Me too.
I was wowed towards the MGS4 ending, when Snake is on his final mission. It evokes so much emotion within a video game, it's just like in a movie or live situation. Kojima is a genius.
MGS4: "too many cutscenes, not enough gameplay"
MGSV: "too much gameplay, not enough cutscenes"
MGS6: "never gonna be available fuck you konami!"
Yeah, I'm not gonna buy MGS6, I'm gonna save my money for Death Stranding.
that's just how stupid people are
3 was perfect, not too many cutscenes and enough gameplay to keep you busy inbetween
Ikr
Metal Gear Online was underrated. It was fucking awesome with a "great" and loyal community. It needed a lot of skill, understanding of the game's mechanics and most of all TEAMWORK. Too bad they closed the servers :(
I was unable to play online when i played the game on ps3 so maybe thats why
+Jezze102 Guess what, it's coming back for Phantom Pain.
+MrThedorkknight Oh yes, I am very much aware of this :)
im skeptical on phantom pain. as the new voice actor doesnt make me feel attached to snake like i was with the old one. im also skeptical on the game as a whole because unlike many i was dissapointed with the fiasco that was ground zeroes a demo you pay for. mgs4 is in my top 4 games of all time and is a behemoth of a work of fiction. i doubt kojima can top that truely amazing piece of fiction, but i dont think itd be impossible for kojima to make a great game. im looking for a better mgs4 which was already really good if they can do that ill be impressed. if they cant, than itll be yet another example of next gen and the gaming industry as a whole being a load of shit.
***** Having played MGS5 because a friend got it early i got to say it's an amazing game from the opening 5 or so hours i played. Kiefer Sutherland is great as Big boss but it does take some getting used to.
Finally someone who doesn't complain about the cutscenes. Here's a fact, if you don't like cutscenes, metal gear isn't for you
Lol no. I loved 1 2 and 3, hated 4.
No I play it for the great gameplay
The best thing is though is that the gameplay is really replay able with loads of variety and options for stealth or action and there are great action set pieces and boss battles. You can always skip the cutscenes as well to get straight back into the gameplay.
"If you don't like cutscenes, play Phantom Pain."
I loved the cutscenes
If we have to play a movie
At least it's the best movie ever
when people complain about the cutscenes im like at least it's better than none like mgs 5. ps I love mgs 5 in terms of game play and the story isn't bad like people say but more cutscenes would have really helped it imo
I don't know why people bitched about the abundance of cutscenes. Metal Gear Solid, since day one, has always been heavy on the cutscenes and that's honestly part of the appeal in my opinion. It's good story-telling.
+Jimmy Noonan EXACTLY, the ones bitching probably weren't even that into MGS. how could you love this story and not want all this info?
kpaschal84 seriously though, like I love the gameplay in all of the MGS games, and watching it change and evolve but still hold true to the Metal Gear formula (if you will) has always been great, but the story and cutscenes and characters has always been what's really driven me to keep playing the games.
I have it but haven't played it yet. kinda waiting for Phantom Pain so I can play them as a whole game and not get pissed about its shortness
Who else loved that brawl....that NOSTALGIA BRAWL!!!!
+AlexADHD yup but Re vs Ray takes the cake ... at least, some of it, no?
+AlexADHD i remember when the mgs1 music ended as i was getting into it and i was thinking "that was a nice little throw back but ended too fast" but then i realized it was still going and the mgs2 music kicked in and as soon as i realized what was happening it became the greatest fight ever.
LIQUID
SNAAAAAAKKKKKEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
DONKEY!!
This was one of those weird games where i would give it a 10/10 but I wouldn't recommend it to my friends.
And i love that they had the balls to say if you weren't there from the beginning then you shouldn't play this game. This is for the fans that were there from the beginning and it was AWESOME!!!
Was I the only one who was saluting like an idiot while the credits rolled while trying to hold back tears ? Yeah. That happened.
I like this better than Phantom Pain.
+Solid Snake cuz u aren't in the game? XD
Fahad Ali Yeah, Phantom Pain needed to be more *Solid!* x)
Nah, but even if I had been in it, I still don't think it would have changed much. MGS4's ending was sooooo satisfying! MGSV's ending was the opposite.
+Solid Snake story wise, sure... gameplay wise however?.... fuck no, its garbage.
=
Sachiel Otaku You think that MGS4's gameplay is garbage??? It had the best gameplay in the series when it as released.
Solid Snake
yeah... and all the previous 3d ones are even worse.
How's I'd rank the games. Story Wise
1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater/Subsistence
2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
3. Metal Gear Solid
4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
5. Metal Gear Solid 5: The phantom Pain
gameplay wise?
+biglegoman1 For me i would put them in reverse order to when they were released. Mgs5 has some of the best gameplay I'vs seen, but boy does it lack in the story department
+TheRatzor I'm probably the only person on the planet that will say this, but I loved MGS2's story the most.
Personally I felt that 3 didn't have the best story.
Yo where's the Peace Walker?
This is my personal opinion, but MGS4 is my favorite game of all time. I have played all the games and still think that it is the best.
for me it's always going to be Snake Eater. at the beginning I was laughing at the voice acting and stuff, but by the end I found myself taking it all seriously. not many games can do that.
+Zombifyed So edgy
Matthew Etter
whats edgey about his comment
Matthew Etter
oh i see. we have a pseudo intellectual here that deems others a joke for liking mgs 4. if anyones got the fedora its you. whatever problems you have with the game, they already sound stupid just from calling someone edgey because its their favorite. 4 is a solid game (no pun intended i swear) and is debatably one of the best in the series.
fallout: war never changes
matel gear solid 4: war has changed
In a sense both terminologies are correct you know? especially for their respective material
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Best game in the series in my opinion. Fucking epic.
How long is it without cut-scenes?
+A man with a knife if you do it to speed run it and skip all the cutscenes, you can finish it in less than 4 hours. (There's even an achievement for it) otherwise, if you explore and have some fun with it, it could climb to about 6 hours or so
I thought I'm the only one who thinks this way
You're not alone.
The final cut-scene after the final act is 71 minutes long. If you enjoy and understand the story it's not as bad as it sounds.
The metal gear games are the greatest of all time, so many memories they came out at the most exciting time of my life so far. But my least favorite was sons of liberty, just cause less snake, but metal gear 4 was my last metal gear. I'll pass the torch to my nephews.
i can't justify buying new systems anymore, for just one game, ill finish with metal 4, pass the spending to the new generation :)
Derek Nelson mgs5 comes out on new and previous gen consoles -> you can play it on ps3
The graveyard scene made me cry
It made us all cry.
WH250398 Really? cheesy, Japanese melodrama moved you?
kaijuchevrolet Dude, it's just a different perspective XD
+WH250398 dude, that scene and the ending of MGS3 straight up broke me
+kpaschal84 i think mgs4 graveyard scene was too long and didnt really say anything heartfelt :( but mgs3s ending was in leagues better, eva's voice over and dialogue and length was just perfect.
thanks to the Legacy collection, i have played through the entire Metal Gear Solid series for the first time and i would say that its one of my all time favorite series! i am now on Metal Gear Rising, which is different from what we're used to from a MG game but its still a lot of fun!
Same here, the only series thart beats it is Zelda, but Legacy collection has been one of the best spent money and time in my life :')
F Britannia
totally agree with you! Zelda is also one of my favorite series
F Britannia
i'm gonna disagree with you because i have played zelda and not found the story to be deeper or overall game better though it doe's has better controls than mgs1 and mgs2 (i haven't played mgs3 so i don't know a single thing about it's controls)
Connor Hines Battams omg dude mgs 3 is probably the best one
Connor Hines Battams Well it's just personal likings, I agree, mgs has better story, but it lacks one thing for me, the nostalgia factor, I grew with Zelda, and just recently played MGS, both are amazing games. And play MGS 3, it's the best one especially the last fight.
WHERES THE PEACE WALKER REVIEW?
(His voice can however be heard in this game, if Snake kills too many people and his psyche gage drops too low.)
Contains the widest assortment of weapons usable in any of the Metal Gear games.
Why? because Kojima makes it a point to tell us people have become lest spiritual over time and relied on science.
snake is really batman... just picked that up from the batman and snake impersonations...
I just got this game for 99 cents, damn that was a good deal.
me too gamestop paper slipped games are bargins
same here! well...2 bucks at gamestop
Will they ever make a PC version
+Jacob B It's on playstation now which you can get on pc so kinda yeah. Just came out. I think the game is there, I'm not sure.
Jacob B Sorry my friend, the game will always be exclusively for PS3 owners, because on the case of the game it says "Only On Playstation" lol
I played MGS4 with my dad and it was so cool that he could remember exactly where to go on shadow moses... Kinda mind-blowing!!
Jeremy Jahns is so awesome, he needs to be on TV.
"Not everything... Not my hockey pants"
Hockey pads. Like from the second movie.
I know, from the Dark Knight. I always thought he said he said hockey pants. And I will continue believing it.
silentwolfSW97 Isn't it Acupat?
wha?
silentwolfSW97 Army Combat Uniform PATtern.
Not everything...not my hockey pads lmao I died
Why do the Gekko sound like cows? LOL
because japan and India are both Asian...
Bow before the god cows
Because Asians don't care about if their enemy's sound like steak.
When you first hear them i was like "Dude, is that a giant cow?"
I know what you mean, but I think they're supposed to sound like bulls.
lol yeah they do sound like cows.
The original MGS is superior (not graphics and gameplay wise) compared to it's Gamecube remake in my opinion.
Tyler Moon I agree. I'm hoping that a proper remake comes to fruition.
"Not everything, not my hockey pants" (laughing to death)
I lost it at the finger-stache. Nice Snake impression, too. :D
in my opinion the stealth in MGS4 works the best.
My favourite thing about the OctoCamo was the "Young Snake" face camo, because I felt that the accelerated aging thing was an unnecessary plot point.
Tyler Moon for me Old Snake is the most epic Snake by far. Especially because David Hayter did a much better job in MGS4 than previous games.
6:41 What about Frisk?
it's a disgrace that this game is still only on ps3
Hopefully master collection vol.2 changes that
The moment you enter the first helipad where Liquid Snake goes into the helicopter and the song The Best Is Yet to Come just rolled through.... I literally shed into tears knowing that the nostalgia overwhelmed me that about 10 years have passed since MGS1. MGS by far the best of any game series in my life. Nothing will ever beat it.
only re watching them videos for these awesome impressions.
Keep it up!!
Finished it for the first time today, and it was epic as f***!!!
its the conclusion of the Solid Snake Saga
does any one notice that liquid's eyes move ? 0:48 - 0:51 look closely
hmmmmm did you press 0:48 or 0:51 ?
ah must be some sort of illusion
holy shit i saw it
Oh yeah, I see now
Omfg wtf?! lmao
Omgwtfbbq
Quarantine got me watching old vids, loved this fucking game though
I loved the Shadow Moses level, the whole time I had a big smile and giddy insides and took my time. Most nostalgic gaming experience ever!
Outer Heaven MGS has a "campy" element, but its nowhere close to what they did in Rising....Rising was just embarrasing. Especially the final boss.
***** Preach!I love Kojima quirkiness,not Platinum...though they make good gameplay,their stories are...ehh
I feel really sad playing mgs4. I mean snake is old, a lot of people died and the overall tone of the game is sad.
It has a really depressing/gloomy tone throughout the whole game
Great, epic game! I'm so hyped up for Phantom Pain!!! :D
With reefer Sutherland?
HELLASgate7 Yeah, he voices a great, honorable sounding Big Boss from what I've seen...
Daniel Casasbuenas his voice doesn't match and it's completely out of place. David would have been a better choice as usual.
MGSV is a great game, but it is not the greatest MGS game. Not even close
**SPOILER**
I didn't.
That was what, MGS PW, MGS5 GZ and MGS5 TPP was, milking.
i hope this game will come out on xbox one eventually
Niall Campbell Its ps3 exclusive, so that wont happen
i can dream can't i
+Niall Campbell No, you are not allowed to dream. Who do you think you are?
+Film Geek ask your mom
Niall Campbell Wow, uh, I was being sarcastic in my last comment but, okay, go ahead and take it the wrong way.
Return of the Jedi, hands down!
I don't know, I thought it was weak that Vader died. Luke did all of that shit to get the father he never knew back and he dies.
david tenant!!!!
K1NG MCMAHON yes indeedy!
I love him!!!!
K1NG MCMAHON you have excellent taste!
You will not be disappointed :D
Even if you played the other MGS games and thoroughly understand the story, whatever goes on in MGS4 just flies right over anyones heads.
I gotta replay this series (I just replay the first one a shitload).
I hated that one due to the controls.
...did you play it when it first came out?
JYJnKumi No, I've only recently got it, sadly. But still yet, if you game a lot and take a break from it it would be very difficult to get into that vibe.
You can't really complain if you only recently got it.
Ocelot mind turned into liquids mind basically thats it.
He used hypno therapy and nano-bots to impersonate liquid, not for any beef w/ big boss, but to fool the patriots...:)
Still better than 5
You could have mentioned a lot more on this game for review purposes.
And I completely agree with you about Metal Gear Rising I don't even acknowledge it's existence
Game of the Generation...
I hate how this game became a punching bag on the internet.
Love your impressions Jeremy!!! You crack me the hell up bro!!!! Great vid as always
Is this video already 3 years old?? I remember patiently waiting for his review of this game. Shows how long I've been following him xD time flies.
Mgs is the greatest series ever. But why do people call games epic. No game ever has been an epic. An epic means a long poem, like the Illiad or paradise lost. Those are epics. People throw that word around now like saying the word "the". It really has lost its meaning.
Words have multiple meanings, words get new meanings.
coalch13 While it has lost it's original meaning one thing that is relevant is that the word Epic (in its original meaning) is a noun.
By far, I mean, BY FAR the worst entry in the canon series:
+khyronbradford The gameplay is ok, but that story is... Just what the fuck, Kojima? Why nanomachines as the cause for everything that happened?
+King Scheiber oh man that was plainly and absolutely stupid as shit.
MGS4 needed the cut-scenes, cuz It was wrapping up a story that had been going for 4 console generations and 6 games at that point.
If you think Snake was slow, then you obviously had too much equipment....
I totally agree.
0:20 but Jeremy, in the words of Ron Pearlman:
War, War Never Changes
the metal gear games are my favorite.
Apex_Predator1998 I know ;) been playing them since the 80's.
-is a fan of the series
-complains about the same thing that every game does
MrTheDerper Actually no... every game doesn't do this.
EQOAnostalgia every game is heavy cut-scene based, so yeah, they do
Mgs4 was the first mgs game I played, also first ps3 game I played.
I tried to only use silenced weapons the whole time and, even though I helped the rebels get out of bad situations alot, it still felt like an MGS game. im more used to the L1 R1 system anyway so I enjoyed this one just as much as the others. plus the nostalgia factor was AMAZING to me
Here's the whole ocelot thing explained:
Mgs2: he uses liquids hand and is this directly possessed by liquid, hence the voice.
Mgs4: Ocelot needs some level of control so he gets rid of liquids hand and gets a robot one. He then hypnotised himself to be like liquid (and during the final fight, he slowly turns back into Revolver Ocelot)
XD I loved your impersonation of Snake, nailed it 10/10
And yes I agree with him as a main character being so dedicated.
Both your Schwarzenegger and Old Snake impressions are superb. Now if only there was a situation to bring the two together...
I Legit we had tears in my eyes when I saw a shadow Moses so much memories
You should have mentioned the OctoCamo, which is the coolest stealth mechanic ever which in turn encourages the stealth aspect of Metal Gear games.
