Hey, I was looking into buying a 2001 x5 4.4i that has known transmission issues and try to fix it and sell it for some money. After some research, I found out the 3rd gear ratio is off and I'm not sure what to be looking for. Everything I've found says to replace the transmission, but I can't find anything on how to actually get the transmission out of the car. Any advice?
removing and installing transmissions on all wheel drive vehicles isn't easy, you need to have experience and tools. We recommend having a shop do the work. Let us know what you decide
Great vid, question, mine may have just failed, the dealer said the trasnfer case may be okay and it might just be the Actuator gear, how can I verify which has failed?? Knowing this may save me a ton of cash so I appreciate any advice.
bimmermerchant when I erase the code the car starts to ride fine for about 15 mins then service engine comes right back and gives me “output speed signal” I did some reading it might be the pulse generator sensor
I have a 2003 BMW X5 3.0i (E53) and I just found out that it has a GM sourced 5 speed automatic transmission aka "5L40E". Do you know if this is a reliable transmission? How is it's reliability comparable to the ZF unit in the 4.4i? Have you seen a lot of failures of this 5L40e transmission? My X5 has 162K miles and runs excellent but I heard some horror stories about this transmission but I wanted to be sure. Thanks

Hey do you know where the output speed sensor is located on this transmission ?
based on our experience, you will need another transmission. We've had similar issues, replaced sensor in valve body and didn't fix the issue.

Ok. Give us an update and let us know if generator sensor fixed your issue.

Hi,I need to change my transmission fluid whats the specification for the BMW X5 E53 4.4
Pretty much like a 4x4 truck. drop the driveline, TC, then tranny. Great fun when you have to do it on your back. (that's what she said lol)
