I remember seeing them at the engine room (I think that was the name of the venue, had all the band logos painted on the wall of who all has played there) in Houston around the time that teething was making it's way around the block. When I heard they were coming, I was going CRAZY. I couldn't wait to see them and Incubus. I had only heard New Skin by Incubus and thought their whole album was like that song, boy was I surprised. 🤷🏻‍♂️👀

This was the first Deftones song I heard when I was 12 years old. I'm now 36 and have never stopped listening to this band. This stuff is my childhood/middle school years. White Pony my high school, the soundtrack to my college years (Saturday Night Wrist era). Gore was when my wife and I got married, and Ohms is now my new Dad years. Thanks, fellas for all the great years and songs.

My band in middle school and high school played every single song from your first and 2nd album. We performed at parties for free and at school talent shows. We just loved Deftones obsessively. I was lead guitar and we were actually surprisingly talented and managed to almost capture the Deftones sound obviously we could never match the true talent and sound of Deftones but we tried and we managed to do it very well. Our favorite song to play was Root and man I loved opening up that song cuz people would go crazy and its actually deeper than that because it was not only my favorite song to play on guitar but it was also our drummers favorite song as well and he ended up committing suicide shortly after high school and it's just a song that is strong in memory for me and what makes me remember him and our time together. He was the most talented of all us by far. If any of us had a chance at really becoming someone in music it was him. He could do anything on drums simply by ear. He made me want to be better cuz the way we created our own original songs was usually either by him creating a beat or by me playing around with riffs to find something catchy and him coming in with a beat to elevate it. It was truly special to be dropping some melodies on my guitar or starting with a simple catchy riff and how he could just take it up to a 100 and pace it perfectly than our bassist would come in and our vocalist would come in last with his melody no lyrics just his vocals spewing anything just to find the rhythm than coming up with the lyrics. Making music is a human connection unparalleled. When a bunch of young kids come together and form something unique all from just being creative and every one of us able to fill in the gaps on the spot was so fulfilling. Im sad to say we all went our seperate ways after our drummer died and ive since put the guitar down.
Ive played on and off throughout the years but I haven't played in a couple years now. I am getting the itch and may pull out my old Ibanez and fender. I still got my distortion peddles and amps. I also had a pick from Dimebag Darryl in which he used during a show I was at where he scratched an x into it and inititialed D.D. on it. My dad was Pantera Coal Chamber and Anthrax security guard that night and also Chiropractor. I got to go back stage and meet these bands and he would adjust their backs 😆. Also met Megadeth and Chicago. But the Dimebag Daryl pick is a special item for me. He always carved an X in his picks. It's cool and it has Pantera logo and is lime green with his initials markered on it. He played the whole show with that pick and I was lucky enough for him to hand it to me backstage. How cool of a memory for me. Also Coal Chamber put on a great opening set that night for Anthrax and Pantera. The mosh pits during Pantera were insane and I actually got beat in very bad by some dude that pulled me out of the crowd and everyone around than beat the shit out of that guy and were all screaming he's just a kid leave him alone. I was not participating in the mosh pits but they grow so big that it started to encroach on me and thats when this crazy dude pulled me in out pf nowhere and started punching back of my head as I laid on the ground and I saw everyone come help me and they beat the shit outta this guy. Its was a crazy night but I enjoyed it even with getting shit kicked outta me. Anyways idk why im pouring my guys out here but shit memory lane was fun and maybe someone will get something out of this comment. If not oh well it felt nice to get some of this off my chest. I love Deftones!
