Note that I do describe Leorio as “normal,” “humble” and lacking in overall talent and skill in combat, but that is in comparison to the main characters of the show - Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Netero, Morel, Knuckle, Hisoka, The Spider, etc. But he is physically strong, and he does have combat skill. It’s just that we hardly get to see him fight in the series. Compared to the average Joe, Leorio is definitely quicker, stronger and better in a fight. And this is demonstrated even more in the manga. But my frame of reference here was in comparison to his peers in order to better emphasize the themes associated with him that I described.

I think Leorio's lines in Hope x and x Ambition highlight the problems with the world more than the entire chimera ant arc. "I thought I could become a doctor. I wanted to cure kids who have the same disease, and be able to tell them it was free of charge! Then I could have told his parents, too. That was my dream...What a joke. Turns out that to become a doctor, you need even more money! Got it? The world runs on money..." There are people in this world with the potential to carry mankind into an age of peace and mutual understanding, and they can't do it because there are even more people in this world that drag everyone else down so they can make a buck. HxH cuts straight to humanity's #1 problem in the fourth damn episode of the show.
The moment Leorio said 'the world runs on money', I found it so laughable to hear something so sour but true, a truth that is so sickeningly real, and yet many of us are unfortunately doing half as much to solve such a problem Even now, I doubt it'll motivate me to work as hard as I should to attain such a goal, but his words- his message- will surely nag at the back of my mind telling me: I'm not doing enough to bring about that change to this world
@@Nedoxu that's why I like socialism better every one gets runned over by tanks equally but seriously true socialism is not something humanity could ever achieve that's why captilism works better for us.
True but then again it only makes sense for him to not be around fighting the Chimera ants for example, it's also something that makes him a great and realistic character.
exactly why Leorio's punch was one of the entire anime's highs and why the entire crowd in the auditorium lays into Ging when he just says "Right." when Gon is leaving (to see Kite)
My favorite thing is how Gon's injury was the worst thing that could have happened to Leorio. The same thing is happening to Gon that happened to his friend, except this time there's no way Leorio can help him. He worked so hard and ended up exactly where he began. That's why his scene with Gon after he was healed was so impactful. I too wish there was a scene like that with Gon and Killua, but I would never want to trade out that scene.
My dude. He's just impossible not to love. Any time he's on screen, he's just great. He can make you laugh and his skills are constantly improving as time goes on. Am I talking about Leorio or Alec? Yes
May Leorio be a better doctor than even Pitou. Leorio is the audience of the story, the most normal. He's relatively weak compared to his peers, but his potential for strength has always been flirted with. Moreover, he resembles a purity that not even Gon displays. Where Gon is the epitome of genuine curiosity, which makes his moral ambiguity such a treat to explore in the narrative of the story, Leorio represents ..well, human nature. He's impulsive, at times ignorant, moody, honest, and supportive all in one. Essentially, Leorio checks all boxes for how to not be a successful Nen fighter, and I'm in for that because that isn't what he's meant to do. He's wants to be a doctor, and I hope Togashi can at least give him the development his fan base believes he deserves before potentially having to wave the white flag on the continuation of HxH. Great video.
How is gone innocent when he smile when killua kill someone, that kid is physcopath😂😂. Oh and on 1999 vers i think one of the character say how gon have the same vibes as hisoka
He’s definitely a real one, he’s underrated, mainly because a lot of people I’ve talked to say he’s very selfish when he’s actually not. Even though he tries to portray himself as money hungry, but it’s not for greed.
Leorio has always been my favorite character. He’s unbelievably relatable (minus the perverted behavior), and extraordinarily well rounded, in my opinion. I love everything you say in this video. Our doctor boy needs more love!
The cool thing about Leorio's character in relation to his friends is his relative lack of power. He and Kurapika have a similar dynamic to what Killua and Gon have, a beneficial/toxic relationship where each character both gains from and sacrifices for the other. Kurapika was able to provide Leorio with power he lacked in the Hunter Exam, for example, but Leorio got to support Kurapika in Yorknew City when Kurapika had gotten in over his head. I have way more to say on this, but I'm still working the idea out in my head. I'm hoping that Dark Continent is for Leorio and Kurapika what Chimera Ant was for Gon and Killua, an opportunity to push their dynamic to its breaking point and then reconstruct it.
I feel as though the author of HXH was a very reserved person in his youth and he quietly observed people and the world around him. He noticed certain personality types and the philosophies that drove people. When he makes a character it’s like him saying “I see you” to those people he observes. And that recognition of differing personalities is something that can resonant with everyone cause each character is so vastly different from each other.
there is nothing that compares to the moment after the super long Chimera ant arc, after the long battles and emotions. they cut straight to Leorio yelling his ass off on the phone lol it was great, it was literally like seeing an old friend again
@@CrowPiper I remembered how relieved I felt during YorkNew Arc when he appeared helping Gon and Killua to earn the money. Even though he's supposed to be the weak one. Now you reminded me another is after the Chimera Arc. He's really concerned about his friends.

winja2109 yeah it’s sucks, but unfortunately the fact that he’s human stopped him from being able to hang with S-Class demons. Too bad he couldn’t physically keep up because his sword can do some damage.
Just to point out the elephant in the room, this is why Leorio is so widely accepted, because the audience would hope to see some of themselves in them, which, in the context of Leorio's characterization, isn't impossible. The fact that he isn't the strongest character further emphasizes this. It's possible to reach the good nature that Leorio presents even based on his earlier convictions of wanting money just like any normal person-- before further expanding on it. Leorio is so likable because, arguably, he's the better, more evolved heart of humanity. What strikes me the most about Leorio is that in all the plethora of different characters that just aren't black and white, Leorio seems to be the most pure of heart of all of them, a fact that I missed when characterizing all the other characters. Leorio's just a good guy. (p.s: I love the way that Ging shows his respect for Leorio, and considering that ol' Alecz' here has interpreted Ging to be an extension of Togashi, it's almost an indirect way of Togashi affirming his own respect for Leorio in HxH)
Leorio is my favourite of all four protagonists. Him always having to keep up with the rest if the squad reminds me of my elementary school days where I was in the same position. Unlike to Leorio however, I didn't had any goals, dreams or even an own opinion back in the day, so it was easy for others to pick on me or leave me behind. Anyways, out of the cast, he's the closest one to an average bloke. But what stands out are the things this video brilliantly broke down. I don't think I'll stomach HxH ending without Leorio getting his own arc or at least a memorable subplot. How long will the narration sleep on this gem of a character??
Y. Lightning then u kno. im betting the DC arc will be Leorio's arc (alongside Kurapika). not now bc its all Kura, but at some point, i bet Leorio will get his spotlight
Loved that you used a thumbnail from the same shot that you got the Kurapika thumbnail, but they give off very different feelings through the titles. Kurapika's, being about solitude, shows him alone but in higher detail implying his self reliance and strength. Leorio's shows him alone but what stands out is the warmth of the sun on his face somehow better showing his compassion and influence those around him. Both perfect thumbnails from the same shot, but for very different videos.
He´s one of my favourites in HunterxHunter. I don´t care how physically strong a characer is. I care more for their morals and worldview and Leorio simply has a wonderful heart. He´s very relatable in his actions and flaws. It will be strange to hear another one voicing Leorio (should the anime ever continue), now that Keiji Fujiwara died. He really gave him a vey down-to-earth and warm voice. I wouldn´t mind more "normal" characters like Leorio in shows like HunterxHunter but seeing such an -relatively- ordinary guy as one of the main cast makes him more special
Agreed. Captain Pip in Hellsing is a favorite because of his blunt honesty, he’s far from perfect but knows how the world works and is loyal no matter the costs.
I see Leorio as having the moral standards of our world, which makes him stand out in the world of HxH. The most rightous and caring character in the show! Parriston is the complete opposite. He wants to break and toy with people as his prey. While Leorio wants to cure and help, as much as possible. They're most likely set up to be enemies/rivals for the future arcs. Cheadle is already against Parriston, while helping Leorio. He'd also be the perfect foil to challenge and make Leorio develop. Hopefully Togashi has a lot in store for our 4'th "main protagonist".
8:27 I would also add that Netero himself says after the fight, when everyone is gathered into the main room that Bodoro had more experience, but in terms of raw combat power, Leorio was the superior. Togashi has a habit of subtly indicating Leorio's strength without throwing him into a fight. In the manga, Leorio was able to partially open the testing gate on his own, IIRC. Also during the election arc, Pariston lists qualities that he believe a good chairman, he mentions Combat ability, Experience, and Caliber. He goes on to list which quality each of the candidates lack, and all he says for Leorio is that he lacks experience. (He was probably bullshitting but that particular scene always stuck out to me). I feel that Leorio keeps getting a bad rep because we've never seen him in action except when punching Ging.
Yeah, that’s very true. I failed to mention it here because I didn’t think it would have added much to the message of the video, but Leorio is an above average fighter, and the manga accentuates this more than the 2011 anime. He’s inferior in comparison to his peers but that’s mainly because they’re so special. I accented that inferiority because of how it integrates with the themes I mentioned, but I didn’t mean to insinuate that he was useless just because he isn’t great in combat in comparison to them.
The cool thing is that it makes him still pretty deadly because of him have good knowledge of the body so I would be surprised if he's a decent fighter and a great doctor.
I agree. Although I always wished his knife skills were as good as Colonel Hues from fullmetal Alchemist. But, even as he is, he's my favorite of the 4. Tho I do like all 4 evenly.
That's a shame, because he's one of the few characters in HxH that I actually really like. The show becomes automatically better when he's on-screen ^^
Everyone’s back story was so sad, but when I heard leorios it hit me harder. Maybe it’s because it was more realistic. I have so much respect for leorio, he knows how the world is and he’s such a good person in the end. I want more of his past.
Leorio is my second favorite character after Kurapika despite not making an appearance that much throughout the show. I hope he gets the attention he deserves at the Dark Continent because I love him so much
When I was 8, I had the biggest crush in Kurapika cause I thought he was pretty, but badass. Now that I'm older, I seriously want to marry a guy like Leorio (besides being a creep)... plus my mum will be proud if I married a Doctor. Finally made it in life LOL
Two more things for the Election arc: 1- the way Gon was hopelessly laying in hospital probably triggered how Leorio’s childhood friend died and he felt useless in both especially with Gon after what he did to get to college to be a doctor he couldn’t do anything but talking and in his speech in his election he said “all i can do is talking to you all”. 2- in the end of the election we get told that even if an honest good man were to win he will lose it anyway because that type of persona doesn’t seek that kind of power leaving it to people like Pareston in the end.
I never thought about it that way, but I absolutely love the reading that Leorio didn't just pass the exam because he got "lucky" and got help, but because he's the kind of person you just WANT to help!🙂🥰
Leorio solos Royal Guards and Meruem with ease. And now seriously, Leorio is my favorite of the Legendary Four (Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio). He has heart made of gold. I want a friend like him.
@@idirbouchdoug1567 yes, at the end of the chimera arc Gon evolves into an ascended adult form of himself to fight Mureum but after he uses his most powerful nen punch attack the ant king absorbs his power and becomes super strong and pwns Gon but then Leorio teleports in and one-shots post-punch Mureum along with all of his guards.
Always heartbreaking to remember the sub voice actor for Leerio passed. He bought such life and range to the character. Will never be the same - such an amazing persona.
I didn’t need to cry so early in the morning, man :(. I hope Leorio doesn’t die in the dark continent arc, it would make the series more dark that it already is.

Leorio has always been one of my faves of the 4. His honesty and willingness to help is just something I admire. I love the scene where he almost snaps on Hanzo during the Gon fight and is always the right person to have in your corner. I feel like his role in the succession war will deal more supporting for Kurapika. Clearing his head during the chaos or even helping him get over his whole revenge thing. He's after the eyes anyway so the troupe is an afterthought. Who knows maybe Leorio could get fed up with the innocent death and get physical. Either way I can't wait to see more of him

Got it? The world runs on money..."
There are people in this world with the potential to carry mankind into an age of peace and mutual understanding, and they can't do it because there are even more people in this world that drag everyone else down so they can make a buck. HxH cuts straight to humanity's #1 problem in the fourth damn episode of the show.
@Average Walkthrougher That's kind of what I was pointing out, yeah...
The moment Leorio said 'the world runs on money', I found it so laughable to hear something so sour but true, a truth that is so sickeningly real, and yet many of us are unfortunately doing half as much to solve such a problem
Even now, I doubt it'll motivate me to work as hard as I should to attain such a goal, but his words- his message- will surely nag at the back of my mind telling me: I'm not doing enough to bring about that change to this world

Thanks very much.

I forgot how much I loved Leorio, this made me cry.
Did they continue the manga? :(

Do you know what episode the thumbnails are from?

I wouldn´t mind more "normal" characters like Leorio in shows like HunterxHunter but seeing such an -relatively- ordinary guy as one of the main cast makes him more special

I think that's being optimistic about our world to an extent
Yeah, could've worded that better. He resembles someone who came from a civil society, who's put into the world of HxH.

Leorio is one of the few cases of "character growth by having no growth". He doesn't change. He's just a good, honest person and it works.

Two more things for the Election arc:
1- the way Gon was hopelessly laying in hospital probably triggered how Leorio’s childhood friend died and he felt useless in both especially with Gon after what he did to get to college to be a doctor he couldn’t do anything but talking and in his speech in his election he said “all i can do is talking to you all”.
2- in the end of the election we get told that even if an honest good man were to win he will lose it anyway because that type of persona doesn’t seek that kind of power leaving it to people like Pareston in the end.
