This has to be one of the most soul fulfilling and heartwarming video on TH-cam. Thanks for keeping the ol’ quarter open Wrecks! There’s no deeper blue

Wrecks used to open for us when Fahl & Folk played numerous times at the Acoustic Old Quarter. In fact the hurricane that sank the Old Quarter was on the night Fahl & Folk was to preform. Good thing we cancelled at the very last moment. I still perform this song to this very day!

Fantastic! Just read Richard Dobson's "The gulf coast boys". Recommended to any fan of Townes. Greetings from Finland

Thanks! This was filmed on a Canon XL1 that I bought back in 1998 to make a documentary on Blaze Foley (soon to show at SXSW film festival).

It's true, Townes wrote this song about Rex Bell, the guy performing this song. And it's true, according to Rex, that Townes would not let Rex perform the song with him, even though Rex was one of Townes' sidemen, along with the great Mickey White.

I think he plays all the time at his club -- he's kinda like the standing opening act, I believe. But he rarely ever travels, stays on his island (Galveston Island, south of Houston).

Arthur, 'Don't Call Me Art' Dekko here, Sure miss seeing you, Wrecks. I'd sure love to get the old PC Cowboys a gig out there. They (not me) are all getting on with their lives and i hardly see them. I love you, man. Buck Stonebroke says, hey.

Not clever, but man, I love this song. Good job, Wrecks.

I ask this in 100% non-sarcastic non-asshole seriousness. Who are you to judge a Townes Van Zandt song? Do you have the body of work to compare to a writer like Townes? Again, not being an asshole, being completely serious. Maybe you’ve written the greatest songs ever and I’m just not aware of it, idk. But to say “not clever” when it comes to you critiquing a Townes Van Zandt song is wrong. Townes doesn’t need to be “judged” or have input from the peanut gallery. You could’ve just as easily said “I love this song. Good job, Wrecks.” But you had to put your little dig in there about how the song is “not clever,” and that comes off not only as unwarranted, but also pretentious. Maybe next time you wanna compliment a song you don’t start off with a put down first? It’s just as easy. All the best your way.

@@JoshMorningstar I no longer have any recollection of what I meant or why I said that. Apologies that you took offense. I do not think Townes did, or would have. I wonder if maybe I was commenting on something Wrecks had said. Again, I have no recollection. I don't think Townes needs you to defend him anymore than he needs me to criticize him, which I'm not sure I even was, because one thing I do know for sure is that if pressed to declare a best songwriter of all time, surely I'd say Townes, or at least I can't imagine whom I'd say instead; and I find your long comment out of nowhere to be surely as pretentious as you found mine, though I don't think I'm offended so much as taken aback.

@@JesseDylanMusic: it's a simple song; while beauty was clearly the result I don't think particular cleverness was ever intended by its composer.

Yeah, he's awesome. By the way, Rex's stage name is Wrecks. Not sure what the story is behind his alternate name...
