He was a preacher in a small Texas town Till he turned to whiskey and sleeping around and all of his angles came tumbling down and he wound up in Dallas too close to the ground There was always a bottle and not much to eat he was out on the side walk dead on his feet and lord its a sad congregation to meet when a man of the cross becomes a man on the street and its one for the master but it was two hard to keep three for the grown man who cries in his sleep four every sinner his mercy runs deep but none for the Shepard who was lost with the sheep he's down at the mission everyday around 4 but the soup from the kitchen is what he's there for he talks about Jesus and stares at the floor and nobody knows if he is there anymore and its one for the master but it was two hard to keep three for the grown man who cries in his sleep four every sinner his mercy runs deep but none for the Shepard who was lost with the sheep and its one for the master but it was two hard to keep three for the grown man who cries in his sleep four every sinner his mercy runs deep but none for the Shepard who was lost with the sheep
Wow! Amazing that you guys figured out the 1,2,3,4 in the chorus! I'm not even sure Blaze knew. He didn't mention it, and I never told a soul. Merle certainly didn't get it. He changed one word and altered the entire meaning of the song. So here's a reward for your diligence and talent in parsing: "Three" is also the holy trinity. Congratulations for being smarter than the average Hag! I sure do miss Blaze.
I got it... wish I'd have found Blaze when he was living... feel pretty sure I was exposed when he was living just didn't get it at the time....I was hooked on Willie, Kris and Merle with a whole lotta Hank Sr
Carlene I've been dying to hear more of you tunes since finding this recording years ago. Do you have anymore songs that are recorded? I've scoured the internet for pretty much anything of yours I can find. No luck, except the new song you posted about Blaze.
@flairross He was 39 -- but his friends said that he lived life fully and packed a lot into those 39 years. Sad that he died but he lived life to the fullest, according to his friends. Glad you found his music!
Great, thanks Ryan! So it's a play on words "one" "too" "three" "for" which I'm willing to bet tickled Blaze's sense of word play. Beautiful, poetic lyrics.
Thanks for this. How beautiful. Love my idea of Blaze and his music and who he was. Had never heard of Carlene Jones but now I have. Like Blaze said, "was that a doozy or what?" A doozy indeed. Let's go party.
It's one for the master, but it was too hard to keep three for the grown man, who cries in his sleep and for every sinner his mercy runs deep but there's none for the shepherd who's lost with his sheep
Yeah, it's a real teary song. I corrected the title, it's "None for the Shepherd." Hank Sinatra enters the shot at the very end and shakes hands with Blaze. Thanks, Anna, love ya!
Indeed! It's hard not to conflate him with the Shepard/man on the street/at the mission/lost with the sheep. Gawd, when he moves his head to take everyone in.....Hank Sinatra did a wonderful job to capture this for us. Love ya right back Kevin!!
If anyone is interested in the true, un-censored and very honest story of Michael David Fuller ( AKA Blaze Foley ), written by the girl he spent several years with and whom he wrote many songs both for and about, google Living In The Woods In A Tree by Sybil Rosen. A phenomenally well-written book; at once sad, fulfilling and poignant, it's both a celebration and expose' of his life as told through her eyes... I couldn't recommend a book any more highly.
Thanks, Carlene, and thanks for the song. Even though my hearing is degrading. I can usually seem to hear the lyrics that others can't. Thanks for sharing your music with us.
Mercy. Wasn't sure if this was a recording or specially put together. Takes one's breath away. Mercy but that man had some strange and v. beautiful charisma.
This is the most beautiful sad song I've ever heard. Sad because the shame of addiction knows no boundaries and beautiful because there is no sin that can stop us from entering in to heaven except unbelief in Jesus, the price was paid at Calvary. I've lost a lot of loved ones to this disease and I know they will meet me on the streets of gold as I enter in.
What a beautiful song, Ms. Jones. Thanks for it. I try to keep the memory and legacy of Blaze Foley alive through my music, playing every song by him I know, every time I get the chance, and telling folks about him when/wherever they'll listen- "Well, he's the greatest damn songwriter you've never heard of." I do believe I'll have to add this song to my repertoire too- I'll be sure to nail the lyrics... :-D
I'm amazed at this man's talent. How many of these talented songwriters have to die before we all realise that our world is completely messed up. Another Texas citizen dies from a gunshot. How surprising is that? When will you folks cop yourselves on ? Probably, when most of your children have been shot. The right to own a gun only means there are more guns and gunmen on the streets. Even a child could tell you that. I hope President Biden changes that crazy law, pretty soon. Regards from a country that knows what too many guns on the streets can lead to. Gerry Farry.
And it's one for the master, but it was too hard to keep Three for the grown man who cries in his sleep And for every sinner his mercy runs deep but there's none for the shepherd who is lost with the sheep He's down at the mission every day around four but the soup from the kitchen is what he's there for He talks about Jesus and stares at the floor And nobody knows if he's there anymore
He was a preacher, in a small Texas town Till he turned to whiskey and slipping around Then all of his angels came tumbling down And he would up in Dallas too close to the ground There was always a bottle and not much to eat He was out on the sidewalk and dead on his feet And Lord it's a sad congregation to meet When a man of the cloth becomes a man on the street
Been a TVZ fan, Blaze fan, all around Texas songwriter fan for years and I'm a songwriter myself...never heard this till now. What a beautiful fucking song. How this never got swept up to bigger artists like Pancho & If I Could Only Fly is a shame. This isn't just a good song its a great one. Should be recorded properly by someone for times sake and credit given where credit is due.
As a matter of fact, Merle Haggard recorded this song in 1999 in an obscure album titled "California Blend." He changed one word...replaced "none" with "grace"...and called it a gospel song. No one knows it's out there.
Its nice that youre in here commenting Carlene :) We do need more info about you though ;D Have you released any songs on LP or CD? This stuff is too good to not hear more :D
Is Carlene still around? Do you have any contact for her? Our country band in Portland, OR covers this song, and it always goes down a storm. We'd love to send her a recording or something. She's touching hearts all the way up in the NW! Thanks! -Lewi
So glad you enjoyed that BadAss. Do you Blaze's music? If you liked this, check out Mopacmedia's page. He's made a gorgeous documentary about Blaze Foley (Trikmitruk's closest rival, lol!)
I don't know but I believe they are good lyrics and worth seeking out. I suggest you attempt to find Carlene Jones on the Internets and ask her. Please report back what you find out, thanks! (:
LMAO @ Carlene 3:17- "Lets" go party". I'd say by the look of Blaze he's well on his way to havin a heck of a good party. Looks like he couldn't find a drinkin glass so he settled on a strawberry jelly jar. Ha bin there myself, whatever holds ur poison.
Other than a few recordings on my computer, the only other version of this song was done by Merle Haggard on an album titled "California Blend." He changed the title to "Grace for the Shepherd." I don't know whether it is on the fucking internet or not. Hope this helps.
Funny stpry , ashs were fallin n i looked out the window n nothin was left livin around ; i was lonely 👌 oooops... They never listen ;-) god bless u , us , 🙏 li or le----- 🙏 Andy ? 🙏

Carlene Jones Hi, can you tell me about Blazes songwriting style? Did he write anything down at all? Like lyrics, or Chords or anything?
Carlene, Thank You!
Love your voice and style. Thank you.
I got it... wish I'd have found Blaze when he was living... feel pretty sure I was exposed when he was living just didn't get it at the time....I was hooked on Willie, Kris and Merle with a whole lotta Hank Sr

I love the heart that wrote this.
I listen to most country gems but i always find my way back to this song. The beat song in existence!
Hands down!
This is the greatest noise my ears ever heard
this is just amazing, this is the real underground.
@flairross He was 39 -- but his friends said that he lived life fully and packed a lot into those 39 years. Sad that he died but he lived life to the fullest, according to his friends. Glad you found his music!
Kindest regards to Carlene Jones. Beautiful song.

How utterly gorgeous...makes my heart ache....
Love Blaze, such a beautiful song. Carlene sounds great.
Just beautiful
This is timeless stuff. Yet feels incredibly relevant right now.
Great, thanks Ryan! So it's a play on words "one" "too" "three" "for" which I'm willing to bet tickled Blaze's sense of word play. Beautiful, poetic lyrics.
Thank you for this video. Carlene with Blaze. Prachtig 👌
Absolutely beautiful song and delivery RIP Blaze
Thanks for this. How beautiful. Love my idea of Blaze and his music and who he was. Had never heard of Carlene Jones but now I have. Like Blaze said, "was that a doozy or what?" A doozy indeed. Let's go party.

It's one for the master, but it was too hard to keep

but there's none for the shepherd who's lost with his sheep
One of the best songs in the world ever. So unknown. So sad :(
Yeah, it's a real teary song. I corrected the title, it's "None for the Shepherd." Hank Sinatra enters the shot at the very end and shakes hands with Blaze. Thanks, Anna, love ya!
Love it. absolutely beautiful!
God I love this, I cant tell you how many times I've watched.
In the words of Blaze -- "that's a doozy!!" Beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Hank and Kevin. -- Mandy
That is just beautiful

Fantastic

This comment may be a rerun but 1234 them comes up again in Blazes Blues
@mopacmedia Do you know how old he was when he died.So sad to hear how he died.I only found him 18 months ago what a presence,
I wish I could have seen those days, I dunno why, I think because it was so simple.
That was so nice. Thank you.
He was a preacher, in a small Texas town
Till he turned to whiskey and slipping around
Then all of his angels came tumbling down
And he would up in Dallas too close to the ground
There was always a bottle and not much to eat
He was out on the sidewalk and dead on his feet

It’s impossible to get hold of the audio version of this song :(

I think Gillian Welch should record this song.
As a matter of fact, Merle Haggard recorded this song in 1999 in an obscure album titled "California Blend." He changed one word...replaced "none" with "grace"...and called it a gospel song. No one knows it's out there.
Wanna hear Merle Haggard sing this song? Check out an album called "California Blend" by Chester Smith.
Did Carlene release any music? def. hard to find if so...
Its nice that youre in here commenting Carlene :) We do need more info about you though ;D Have you released any songs on LP or CD? This stuff is too good to not hear more :D

I don't know but I believe they are good lyrics and worth seeking out. I suggest you attempt to find Carlene Jones on the Internets and ask her. Please report back what you find out, thanks! (:
My late brother adored that pathetic old sop and now I see why
R I P Blaze and Tony
Carlene do you have any albums? I'd like to hear more of your music
When are you gonna post Jubal Clark?? Jubal's material would really blow the lid off of things!!!
I saw a photo of him at 38. He aged fast. Maybe unwell?
Definitely hard living - he and Townes did a lot to numb the pain they felt.
We need Jubal Clark footage, folks!
I'll second that.
There ain't nothing like an old lady from Texas
LMAO @ Carlene 3:17- "Lets" go party". I'd say by the look of Blaze he's well on his way to havin a heck of a good party. Looks like he couldn't find a drinkin glass so he settled on a strawberry jelly jar. Ha bin there myself, whatever holds ur poison.
