The anime where the best girl is a guy.
Reminds me of something: I was watching One Punch Man with my siblings a while back, and that show has very few female characters, most of whom aren't all that sympathetic. So we decided that one of the male characters (namely, Mumen Rider) was best girl.
No series can top Baka and Test for that. Wish Geoff would cover that series just so I could hear the phrase "best girl Hideyoshi" spoken aloud. By someone who isn't me.

A detail you missed is that the white silhouettes Moriko is looking through the window are the real appearances of her guild companions. Noting the very first time we see the real Pokotarou. Also I note this scene like "her friends and love interest are much closer than she thinks."

I felt this show was a real treat. As someone who's played MMO's for over 14 years. It's themes and characters are easy to relate too for anyone who's been invested in the medium.

You can how tell how old Geoff is by the fact that he's using a Twilight era joke in his title.
You probably don't know those, but MMO Junkie reminded me of a german audioplay based on World of Warcraft. It was largely comedy oriented, had the same themes and was (in my opinion) even better than MMO Junkie, simply for the fact that it took place in a world I knew in and out. It's called 'Der Boon'. This and its spiritual sibling 'Allimania' are still referenced to this day by german players. ^^

I really love the little details in this show. In the ending they actually pay attention to the canon layout of Moriko's bedroom AND properly reflects it while showing Moriko's reflection on her computer screen AND removes the reflection at the end when it shifts to show her renewed appearance from the computer's actual perspective rather than a reflection.

if you ever do March comes in like a Lion, season one's OP has to be done with the ED, since the OP and the ED convey a story when viewed back to back.

Saw the tweet with the thumbnail and I’ve been looking forward to it for a while. This is one of my favourite shows this season and I’m loving the dub so far.
couldn't agree more that the op rocks. I still find it funny that the fat guy and squinty guy get more screentime in it than in the actual show.
I did not expect MMO Junkie to be my most anticipated series week to week. I'm so glad that CR gets to stream the OVA, because it just looks fun
But yeah, definitely my favorite anime this season. It's perfect for my current timeschedule too. Something I can look forward too but not so deep that I'd spend hour upon hours looking for fan content, theories, and extra information
I like how she spins anticlockwise when she's first spinning on the chair almost like her life is not progressing like a clock moving backwards but when she gets up and takes the first step the chair is spinning clockwise like her life is starting to get better once she decided to do something

I ended up rewatching the series last night, and I think ended up loving it more the second time because I think I relate more to Moriko than I realized: In the middle of a stand-still while figuring out what to do, and video games being my escape. I also just love the relationship between her and Sakurai, it's so beautiful and cute!

The OPs this year are pretty great, but there’s no Vento Aureo or Mob Psycho 100 this year, so it’s worse than last year, sadly.
There is so much pressure on the Vento Aureo opening, both song wise and direction wise!

This analyzations is soo good! It helps me find out what's good and what's not good in story boarding and story telling through visuals!!! Especially the mirror part, I didn't realize the symbolic significance and characterization in it!
I love this anime soooo much. I met my fiance on an mmo (Wow) and he moved countries for me and moved straight in. We've been together 6 years now.
This anime captures so well what it's like to have relationships on an mmo,even friendships, and the issues that come with that.
Your analysis on the op of mmo junkie is very nice! My favorite parts of the entire op are both the lake scene and when it shows off the guild members.

I always loved the little details in this show. My favorite thing must be when Morioka sits down at her PC in the ending and the credits scroll along with her mouse wheel. It's a small thing, but so clever!

If someone were to kidnap me and gave me the choice to watch SAO or the Twilight Saga Movies, I would pick SAO in a heart Beat.
Evo No it isn't. Lesser animation and generic rom com do not "a better SAO" make. You SAO haters will just latch onto any fucking thing no matter how good or bad it is simply because it has a similar premise to SAO that you can use as ammo against SAO.

MMO Junkie is easily my favourite anime of the season. Every. Single. Episode makes me grin like an idiot and the story is just so compelling and relate-ably awkward. While I met my girlfriend because of the military I can guarantee that there is a sufficient amount of adorable awkwardness in Every relationship. Thanks for the video, Jeff!
really loved this show. i finally got the motivation to try watching anime again after over a year of complications due to school and work, and this was the first show i went to. i watched it in its entirety within the last week just in time to catch the finale, and i honestly needed such a nice, lighthearted show for this time in my life. so, i'm glad to see you liked it too and made a very interesting video on its OP! keep up the good work, Geoff!

I remember after my first suicide attempt, I was in the hospital for a while, my legs couldn’t work and that would later affect my mobility throughout life.
My sitter showed me this anime and it is not only close to my heart because of that, but also for the connections of mmos and video game groups and friends.

I was surprised this wasn't in the meta game video as it subverts the trapped in an MMO genre, as she is trapped in real life and is free in the MMO world. But I'm new to the game, so not sure if it's been done before.
I'm a little surprised that Geoff didn't mention the SUPERB editing in the section where Morioka stands from her chair, where the circling of the chair, her steps, and the cat alarm clock makes such a good movement curve that it kinda makes you forget about the simplistic animation. It doesn't really deter from the video being great already, I just wanted to point it out. Or did he mention it and I missed it?
Watching this video 6 years after watching it on launch and after finally watching MMO Junkie. Gosh, I loved the show and I love this opening so much.
my graphics teacher would love this because the one thing he repeats daily is work smarter not harder copy paste items re use old assets as he used to be a graphics artist

So I doubt youll see this but I just wanted to let you know that i love your whats in an OP video's and this is a compliment because, I tend to not watch anime op's like ever. If I like the music I might look it up to listen but not to actually watch. But your videos are just so good and detailed it all makes sense and gives me an appreciation for the op itself. So you know... Keep doing you boo boo.
You mentioned them sitting on a tree and I immediately flashed back to when I met one of my best friends in an mmo- in a tree, laughing with each other.
Not gonna lie, I almost cried.
This has straight up been one of my favourite anime this season by a wide margin.
Funny thing is i met my best friend on a MMO very similar to the game that they played, in fact the game shows up on certain screens at various times during the show in the convenience store. and it even has an event going on during this post for MMO junkie. the game was called mabinogi if you want to know. anyway. anyway this game really hits home for me, more then almost anything else because i met a person in a game that i hold dear to me, and if things played out differently i would probably have dated. personally i think that would be a giant mistake since us being friends is the best thing i could ever hope for since it doesn't complicate our current relationship :D
Funny when it came to MMOs I never played in a group with people and I would often charge in alone, I remember my MMO experience being more lonely and finding the challenge ahead to strike down.
Oh yeah, I’m not really sure why, but I think this anime ‘shouted out’ a real MMO. In one of the scenes at the convinience store, it’s on the screen on the counter. The game is Mabinogi, which exists, while it also is kind of promoting the anime on it’s start screen. They even have gachapon boxes with items that relate to the anime you can buy
Its weird, I started watching this yesterday at the exact same time you uploaded this video. Its not normally the thing I would watch but I caught on an anime website.
Nice little detail on the pink haired character equipping new clothing and the physics freaking out for a second.
I thought that this OP has more depth to it, but I could not notice it myself.
This video got me interested in watching the show. One of the few times i have stopped a video to catch up so i am not spoiled. I am so glad that i did. This show was amazing. Thanks for covering it and getting me hooked on an amazing show

This show was amazing and not one to gush normally but it really connected with me on a lot of levels. When the biggest flaw a show has is me just wanting more of it well that is acceptable.
I don't think we will see anything like this again.

Omg I am so happy you covered this OP. I was so worried you would skip it because of it's lack high budget animation but I love it so much as well as this whole anime. I am the same age as Sakurai and I relate to him and his avatar Lily so much!!! I think this anime had a better love story that Yuri on Ice and that is saying something because I loved Yuri on Ice. I hope you do more MMO Junkie videos, especially a what's in a scene because there were so many good ones!!!

Also, hopefully you can answer a question for me. What's up with the paint roller(?) that Moriko uses a lot when she gets nervous or stressed? Is it a lint roller? I assume this is some Japanese cultural thing that I don't get.
I really enjoyed this video and I'd love to see more like it. I obviously love you breaking down why brilliant OPs from classic anime are so brillaint, but something like this is a really interesting contrast. It doesn't have the depth or beautiful animation of stuff like FMA and/or Spice and Wolf, but it's success in more technical basics is still very interesting and great to learn from. A walk before you can run sort of thing. So, again, I'd love to see more good, but not legendary OP analyses. It might also be good to do some on really bad OPs and talk about why they fail.

MMO Junkie is the hidden gem of this season!
Loved the video, This anime is in m opinion the best about otaku life I've seen since N.H.K ni youkousou, yes N.H.K. is deeply psicological while this is a romantic comedy but it is so well executed, the characters are so simple and yet well created, so human you cannot help but to love them and their relationship feels so natural that it is a breath of fresh air among most anime that deals with romance, I totally love it and if there is one thing I could ask from it would be more episodes or at least a few OVAs hehehehe
MMO Junkie is second best of the season for me, with first being Girls' Last Tour thanks to its masterful sixth episode and third being Land of the Lustrous due to its jaw-dropping camera work in Episode 10.

I actually started to watch this one based on Jeff's previous recommendation and the fact that it's a josei, initially I was under the impression it'd be just a "irl SAO" harem deal and was really uninterested, but since it's a josei and those are usually at least different it was worth a shot and I've been enjoying it with my fiancée ever since.
Also helps that when we started dating we used to play a lot of Ragnarök Online together, so this anime is rather nostalgic; it's also interesting to see how it portrays Japan's adult life which is not really common to see in animes.
Small detail, way too late, but I just decided to rewatch MMO Junkie because it's a delight and also something I know very well in dub, so I can just have it in the background, and I noticed a little thing about one particular credits scene. A minute into the OP, when Hayashi and Lily are near/over a lake, the credits are placed under them, obscuring their reflections in the water. They're both reflected as Lily and Hayashi, but reflections are an important part of the show and the OP, and seeing them intentionally obscured when they're around each other is clever.
10:50 You got that way wrong. If you consider the shot ordering, it would make more sense for this to take place before Lily and Hayashi meet. The subsequent flashback to their time together in Nanter Saga sells the point. This is referencing how Morioka had to quit Nanter Saga in favor of her job, leaving Sakurai behind. The same job she ended up quitting later, resulting in her meeting Sakurai again, albeit in a different game (since the old one died).
This does two things. It demonstrates how the story comes full circle. It also shows how they both long for the simpler happier older times, which is farther sold, both in the OP and in the series itself, by the fact that Nanter Saga has a chibi art style. It's a parable for childhood friendship, growing apart, and then coming back and falling in love as adults. It's a fairly old and overused plot-line, as anime goes (there's at least one or two forlorn childhood friends in almost every harem), but converting it to a digital form makes it new again.
Oh huh, I didn't notice the modified Window shot. Honestly though, I might disagree and prefer the empty background over having Hayashi "standing there." It plays to Mori's isolation. MB analyzing the spinning chair shot on the other hand, that had me pumping my fists in the air.
A "What's in an OP" for Gosick would be AWESOMEEEEEEEEEE

I can imagine when Geoff both finished writting and then recording the script he felt so proud of that last line he actually went away from his keyboard and then felt obligated to stay away from the keyboard for a long enough time for him to have made it valid for him to say that and so just had to find some kind of way to take away his time before he could go back.
I have been really loving this show, glad you covered the opening! I was waiting on whether or not you would cover it, so I am happy to pointed out things I hadn’t noticed!!! Those last few episodes left me clinging on to the cliff for dear life, but they were also very fun. Sad to see it come to a close as I will be watching that last episode soon, but all good things come to an end. 😂

You left out the one detail, Geoff! The TITLE-CARD TEXT!
The text on the title-card being at a slanted degree gives the implication of having difficulty being suited in the condition but somewhat remaining standing nonetheless, in reference to the protagonists (but mostly Morioka). The color of the text, with the red and blue colors being reference to the 3D effect of the colors but remaining 2D, denotes that while a total impression is given in an illusion of 3D, its reality is based solely in the simple two-colors of 2D, in which is allusion to their MMO life. Additionally, these colors both strike resemblance towards Hiyashi and Lily's color schemes and their lightly-touching-but-mostly-coinciding existence with one another - while the two's personal lives intersect in some capacity, they otherwise exist side-by-side through the game. Behind and within the text, the background flashes by, indicative of their lives going by without much focus as background noise with the focus of their relationship being more in focus. At the end of the title-card's text entering screen, both sides of text straighten out with one another, together, standing tall.
Even without that small tidbit, awesome video as always! INFINITE LOVE, MY MAN.

Something to note, 11:45, Moriko isn't looking at Lily, she's looking down. But Lily IS looking at her. Presumably, this could mean that Sakurai KNOWS that it's Moriko he's thinking about, but Moriko doesn't know that Sakurai is Harth.
Well it's nice to know that the moving of a single drawing of a foot didn't drive you crazy like it did for me.
My thoughts: Wait, is that how feet work? It's so stiff, but maybe it's supposed to be like that, but I don't really watch feet that much or draw them, much less animate them, so why would I know anything, ahhhhhhhhhh.
