Yep. They sould've made a distinct category for movies imo. Koe no Katachi is undoubtly better than all the TV anime contenders in the best animation category. They could've added Kizumonogatari III Reiketsu-hen to make the award more challenging to get LUL.
Yeah, They could've gone with Movie animation and a TV show animation categories, if they really wanted to showcase animation. Movies and TV shows has too much disparity because of budget and time constraints.
I legit don't care who wins anime of the year. The fact that Houseki no Kuni got so much recognition is enough for me. A CG production that ticks the boxes for almost every category? People seriously shouldn't knock it for its animation style, because it actually was a nomination for best animation of the year. Phos would be best girl if she wasn't an androgynous gem.

On a serious note he was my favorite dragon character and that’s from someone who usually hates Emo&/orGoth anime characters but watching him turn into a hardcore gamer and embrace nerd culture if I may call it that was a trip and the friendship he develops with koboyashis drinking friend was especially heart warming to me

Gintama has too many jokes that require you to be in the know to actually get it. While Konosuba you can jump in and enjoy without needing to know much popculture etc.

It's clear Made in Abyss is going to be Anime of the Year, but the fact that Houseki no Kuni is even nominated makes me happy.

Trust me, Bondrewd is villain of the year once Made In Abyss season 2 hits next year. The elevator scene was only a fraction of how fucked up that white whistle is. The fact that he was nominated alone for only having a presence in the finale of season 1 goes to show how much worse things will get.
I was honestly surprised to see him nominated with what we have seen of the story so far. He didn't even directly appear in the adventure yet, only in flashbacks and off in the distance. I honestly can't wait for his arc, it was pretty intense event and his fight with Reg is going to be awesome.

Youji Senki really got snubbed in my opinion. The story of Tanya is able to comment on everything from religion to capitalism while still managing to be an exciting war story. Tanya herself is fantastic character who you are left unsure whether she nothing more than a cruel person in over her head in her war with Being X or if she is someone who wants to show that a person can work themselves to a point where you don't need a god to succeed through hardship and that any being demanding to held in such a regard is just an egomaniac who can't self-validate.
mrtotheextreme Tanya herself is a hypertalented person who is also a sociopath with a complete disregard for human life. They reason they enable her despite being disgusted with her actions is because the society they live in (capitalism/imperialism) benefit directly from her being a hyperefficient killing machine. If they didn't need her to prop up the current power structure, they wouldn't give her the time of day and reward her sociopathy, giving her other talents a chance to grow.
It's no coincidence she never actually gets to go to college and become an accountant or something, or how her previous life has him fire people for others as a living, or how God wants her to pray her way into becoming better at killing, or how she never rises to the top of the heirarchy in both lives. It's because both societies rely on the ignorance of those in power of their own naivety and disregard of human life. The people in Magic Germany are holding a Good War, that will expand their borders and bring prosperity to their own people. The death of millions from a war? Oh well. At least Tanya is self aware, but self-actualisation has no place in power structures that do not value humanity.

The CGI of that Cube was good, but not even close to the entirety of the CGI used in Houseki.

My anime of the year: Land of the Lustrous. This show just spoke to me in such a deep way and has some of the most interesting character dynamics and growth I've seen in a series, let alone in a 12 ep series. Very happy it's getting the recognition it deserves and I eagerly await Season 2.

As much as I love Ancient Magus Bride's opening song, it really dont deserve a spot here for best opening, there is like nothing going on in the op, at all, apart from the one spinning shot with Elias that are pretty well animated, all the very nice clips are from the show itself, so the op literally have, nothing going on

Pat DelaMigra Its because JoJo is such a niche genre in itself. Everyone who watches JoJo loves JoJo and all thought Kira was a god amoung villains (which he really was). But it's hard to convince non JoJo anime fans to watch for a couple of reasons. 1. How intimidating (good or bad) the fandom is, and 2. The feeling they have to watch all of Jojo's to be able to get part 4 (I can understand, and the true fans hate skipping parts and would last out at the idea). In hindsight, it was pretty amazing that he came so close to winning. Nonetheless, I will forever be salty that Kira lost, and lost to that poor excuse for a villain from Erased.

Made in Abyss, My pick for Anime of the year. This is probably the only Anime I've watched in the last few years that has me thinking about it almost everyday since the last episode. I highly HIGHLY recommend you watch it if you haven't already. GET ON BOARD ALREADY!!!
Not having finished March comes in like a Lion and passing over it everytime is a huge disservice to an amazing show. I understand you can't watch every nominee from every category before commenting on the contest and publicizing your picks but skipping a one off show like Fate Apocrypha for best Action is way more accepted than skipping over a show thats in 6 categories and immensely deserving in nearly all of them.

21:17 I think that Made in Abyss fits this much more for me. Hero Aka seemed like a pretty generic idea executed well. Sure, it was entertaining, and I could recognize that it is a quality show, but there's really nothing special about it beyond that. It's shows like Made in Abyss, which you would never see anything like in any other medium, that make me remember my love for anime. No other medium would accept a story as out there as Made in Abyss. The whole idea of it is ridiculous and wouldn't go well with mainstream western audiences. An adventure in which cute looking children are basically on a journey to their certain deaths? But the anime medium achieved that, and made it into a full fledged beautiful work of art.
Made in Abyss's story and world set up something uniquely special. The worldbuilding is so unique and so intriguing, it's not like any show I have watched in years. My desire to know what the 5th and below layers are like creates more interest in the show on its own than all of the quality animations, characters, plot etc that Hero aka can pull off. It's just another show to me, and I wonder how you view it as the anime of the year. To me, the uniqueness and intrigue of the world and the story in Made in Abyss really encompass what made me love anime. Not another shounen anime done well. Similar to Naruto, back in the day. The Akatsuki acted as the same mechanism that the Abyss acts. The mysterious unknown, which I wanted to know all of its secrets. I wanted to know who every member was, I wanted to know their backstories, and I wanted to know their powers. Back in the day, that was enough mystery to intrigue me into the story. Now, Made in Abyss has invoked that same great interest that makes me dying for the next season. I'll happily leave it as one of my top 3 favorite anime of all time, and I say that it is hugely impactful in my anime experiences.
That is why I choose Made in Abyss over Hero Aka for best anime of the year.
I feel like March Comes in Like A Lion is not being talked about enough. It's an awesome show with great characters, complex themes especially with the recent bully arc and while not much happens in the animation, the frames of animation are beautiful combined with the abstract artwork and different colors they use. I'm gonna vote for Rei Kiriyama as best boy and March Comes in Like A Lion in Anime of the Year. It really speaks to me as a show that handles the topic of isolation and loneliness really well as well as the recent bully arc. If you haven't seen this show, I highly encourage you all to do so.

While I understand where you're coming from with Kado, I still would give it to Land of the Lustrous. The Kado cube was amazing and mind-blowing for sure. However, no other anime from 2017 has shown such fluid character movements and expressions when it came to 3D. I would even say it was groundbreaking in that aspect and definitely deserves the award. ^_^

Well, at least MHA has broader appeal to audience, one of the best shonen anime in recent year and it is from one of my favorite studio BONES who did outstanding work on the animation for most of their show, including Kekkai Sensen, I wouldn't be disappointed if it won most of the awards.

Joey Carthew What are you talking about? It wasn't even the show with the most nominations. What nominations do you feel MHA didn't deserve? Yuri on Ice was getting nominations for best boy, best animation, anime of the year all of which it deserve. The fact that it won all three, and then some, which made it clear that it was purely ravenous fans pushing it because it was the most popular anime of the season. Additionally, MHA came out in the middle of the year and has remained part of the conversation within the community despite other popular coming out. Last year shows like Re: Zero and Mob Psycho got completely overshadowed by Yuri on Ice during the nomination process. If anything shows like Land of Lustrious is getting a more significant push the MHA.
I wish to thank you for your continued support towards Re:Creators. It absolutely is my Anime of the Year, and really, my new favorite Anime of All Time. It fulfills my specific niche more perfectly than anything I've ever seen before, and hearing you reiterate over and over again that it is an outstanding show just makes me smile.
Now if only Symphogear could start gaining some traction.

I know. My Hero Academia, Magus Bride, Witch Academia, and even Made in Abyss or Land of the Lustrous have become mainstream series. March Comes in Like a Lion and Rakugo went under radar (like always), but they should win several categories.

I can tell you haven't seen any of natsume series. It dose have some similarity but it is very different in many ways. They may have similar themes but how they look at them and deal with them are very different. Also the character cut a lot closer to heart for me. It is one of my series I love most. I would recommend to watch it, but that is just me.

Honestly I'm really scared that attack on titan 2 will pull out a win in best CGI simply because of its popularity and the fact that most of the less serious anime fans will probably not have heard of either of the true contenders. I mean AoT 2 had decent CGI but nowhere near the level of Kado or Land of the Lustrous so I will just hope silently that my remaining faith in the community is warranted.
Nah, the CG in AOTS2 is very short and not as good as Land of the Lustrous. Houseki no Kuni is definitely gonna win this round for Best CG.
Well that's why you shouldn't bother paying attention to award shows nor putting faith into a community. It's all biased. I get that you love your CGI shows, but that's you, you enjoyed those shows for your own reasons. Knocking off AoT S2 because it's more mainstream is not fair for other fans who genuinely loved it as well. It's all popularity choice, but doesn't define that that show is the best of its category. You can love your show all you want even if it didn't win some dumb category award that shouldn't matter. It's just bragging rights, which is just stupid cuz it's the internet.
I disagree with your pick for the best hero but mostly based on the definition I use for a hero. When I think of a hero I think of someone who is willing to jump into action to help someone in distress. While I think that Nanachi has some of those qualities she is a bit of a recluse, only helping our main heroes once the damage had been dealt. My pick goes to Gin, she encapsulates my definition of a hero and also has one of the most badass moments.
It makes me very happy to see a big anime TH-camr also loving Re;Creators. Coming off the paper I wrote on Postmodernism to be greeted by Re;Creators, a Postmodern masterpiece of an anime, pretty much ensured it would be anime of the year for me.

because you know she literally died for her friends and she was always willing to help EVERYONE out which actually got her in a bit of trouble with her teachers and such. though to be fair this is personal biases since Yuki Yuna is one of my top 5 anime of all time (and is probably going to stay there for quite some time) so yeah. I also know it's extremely unlikely shell win but a girl can dream right? 😜
Also Yin wasn't supposed to be the protagonist. She was one of the three main characters sure but the protagonist is actually supposed to be Washiro of course just like Yuna in Yuki Yuna you really don't notice she's the main protagonist at all but look at me babbling on about things I probably know nothing about 😁

Crax Having a good rating doesn’t mean it’s still not underrated. I feel this one is still so low under the radar and the main reason is due to Fucking Amazon Strike Thank God It’s Dead. I just watched it 1-2 weeks ago and I thought it was amazing. If amazon strike was still a thing I would have likely missed out on this Gem.

Gin is not the main hero of her own show, the show is literally called Yuuki Yuuna is a hero which focuses on Yuuna while the part she is in is called Washio is a hero and focuses more on Washio than Gin. Plus Gin does sacrifice her life to save not only her friends but her family and all of humanity. She definitely deserves best hero over everyone else in my opinion.
You forgot Inuyashiki, man! He's the main hero and he sacrificed himself to save the Earth, not just humanity.

Exactly what I was thinking. I love Nanachi to bits and pieces but Gin goes above and beyond being a hero. It's a shame that YuYuYu is so underrated that most people won't even bat an eye to Gin.

Houseki no Kuni was such an amazing CGI anime, it was byond beatiful. I honestly don't know why they didn't put that anime on there, other then it didn't get that much attention maybe?

-Not a single nom for Ballroom? That show did underwhelm, but still had at least two best boys. Children of the Whales could also have been thrown a bone, although that was mroe understandable.

-There really only was one decent villain this year, for shame
-Is it really fair to stack the AOTY category with continuing shows? They have a clear advantage.

The fact that Owarimonogatari 2 wasn't mentioned in any category (not even Best Continuing Series or Best *Opening*) is a crime.
I responded to this earlier, the problem is that to get to Owarimonogatari 2 you have to find your way through everything that comes before it which most people will never do so it was never going to have even a remote chance of making it on here. I loved Monogatari to bits but even I have to be realistic and Owarimonogatari 2... Was freaking amazing but I have to be honest here, Owari was never going to stand a chance of winning simply because people would look at the mass of seasons which made up the monogatari series, try to figure out where to start and then say "fuck this, I'm outta here" then march off elsewhere.
Magister vulpes yeah, I get that, but I still think i should be up there. Even though not many people made it all the way to Owari 2, most of the ones who did gave it a 10/10, which is why it was #1 on Mal for a while, then dropped to #3 for a few days, and has been on #7 ever since (i think). If the nominees has been chosen by popular vote, I think Owari 2 would be up there

TenLittleMen but... The cityscape of Tokyo... You've got to admire the artistry of a bunch of slightly less detailed cubes arranged in an environment (I'm going to assume that there isn't alot of establishing shots of the cityscape).
It was good...... but then that ending though.
I can already see a lot of battle between Land of the Lustrous, March comes in like a lion ,Made in Abyss and Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. Seriously I really don't know which of this would win.

Rakugou Shinjuu was a masterpiece. It deserves some recognition. It is an art. People should at least watch its 5 episode before choosing any other option for the best drama awards.

Hero Aca almost got a tear out of me, Inyuashiki had tears running down my face, and that execution scene in Made in Abyss had me in a ball crying and wishing the pain would end.

The Anime Awards this year is SO much better than last year. I commend Crunchyroll for the changes made and nominee choices in each category. I hope this will be a proper award show rather than just a popularity contest. As TotalBiscuit says, an award is meaningless unless there is justification given for why the award is deserved. I personally will be voting Made in Abyss as Anime of the Year.

I'm halfway between San-gatsu no Lion and HeroAca for anime of the year. I have just adored this second season of San-gatsu no Lion so much, so many of it's dramatic moments have plucked my heartstrings, and I keep recommending it to my friends on twitter like, every time I watch an episode.
Speaking of which, there is a new episode out and I'm delaying.

To be honest, the reasons you give for putting HeroAcaS2 as AotY are my reasons for putting Made in the Abyss there. The use of music, the unique atmosphere, the strenght and impact of the initial episodes, it all made me screm "Yes, yes, *YES* ! This *IS ANMIE*! This is what the medium is capable of!" . I'd say it deserves atoy for showing off the fantasy and emotions in a way only the animated medium is capable of, presenting a level of imersion live action is yet to match and quite possibly will never reach. It's unique, hits hard, and feels *real*, in a way characters rarely do
For me also worth considering are comparisons:
The "superpowered highschoolers" premise was present and explored in live-action, and integration of special effects is at a level where they can be realistiacally presented as a part of the world without breaking the immersion.
On the other hand, A full-on fantasy world is still a hard thing to seamlessly integrate with real characters, and while it certainly has been done and has been done well, the combination of children protagonists and cruelty is something no live-action has presented on this level this awesomely, with the emphasis on *awe*
