I was just casually watching her video and my mom sit besides me and stares for a while(she doesn't know english) and all of sudden said her hair is just so pretty.
Aww please thank her for me 😊
@@CarolynMarieReads Haha, sure!! 🤍
Its ok Carolyn, it took me 18 months to read Don Quixote 😅 sometimes you just need to be in the right frame of mind to really make progress on certain books, even if you love them!
The Graveyard Book is my favorite Neil Gaiman novel. It really needs to be made into a mini-series. Every chapter is like its own episode. I hope you enjoy it!
I just read this book for the first time and loved every moment of it.
The postman dropped off a package for me. He could see it was a book by the label, and he said "Happy reading" and I of course thought of you Carolyn! 🙂
Aw I love that! 😊
plot twist: the postman watches Carolyn's channel xD

I love Hamnet; it’s one of my favourite books.
I know its coming soon, so Happy National Pasta Day! oh, and, Happy Birthday, too!
Watching this for breakfast at work❤
Jamaica Inn is one of my favourite books 😍
Wow! I too like Jane Austen and Bronte sisters... they are just different 2 things which would just grab our hearts in different ways.. I would say that Jane Austen is light hearted with much to think like Bach and Bronte sisters are like heavy to think like Beethoven...
Yea "was not in the right head to read it" happens to me frequently and I abandon the books which I feel very attached to and read in a day or 2 later and think why on earth didn't I finish it last time...
I loved when I read The Graveyard a couple years ago. Jamaica Inn will probably be my next Daphne du Maurier. I love She's the Man, but I have never seen or read the original play.
I am currently reading Jamaica Inn and loving it! Daphne Du Maurier may be my favourite writer and My Cousin Rachel is one of my favourite books ever 🧡 Her writing and her mind were truly one of a kind
So glad to hear! :)
Wow I thought you only read classics I love to see these folks other books that you're reading
I looooooooved Hamnet. You definitely have to be in the right headspace, but it is perfect for fall, with the kind of witchy vibes Agnes gives :)
im currently on a big break from reading as i felt i lost my joy in it, fortunately still have amazing videos by you, thank you Carolyn♥️
I was in the middle of 'sense and sensibility' and I dropped it. I hope to finish it by the end of 2023.
It will be great to see discussion with Emma about the first two books
I've only ever heard of Neil Gaiman. After this video tho, Graveyard Book may just be my first Neil Gaiman book 😍
As for what books do I enjoy this time of year - murder mystery, especially around Christmas. Watching Knives Out & Glass Onion during Christmas of last year brought me so much. Cant wait for this year
The last couple of Decembers, I've been reading 'A Christmas Carol'. I found an audiobook narrated by Patrick Stewart, so I've been saving that.
I also have a ticket for a theatre show in December, by a brilliant touring company that I always try and see (DYAD Productions).
I don't even like Xmas!
Oo i have to check that audiobook out. It’s my favorite Christmas story. I finally read the book last Christmas and plan to do the same this year
Middle grade March book club is reading The Graveyard book this month.
Love your recommendations - I will see if I can get a copy of “Eugene Onegin” from my library.
i haven't read anything since the school year started (i'm a teacher, so very busy😢) but i'm hoping to read a few more before the end of the year. up next on my tbr is 'tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow' and i also hope to finish the mary oliver poetry collection im working on!
Luv Du Maurier ❤️! I have seen a couple of versions of Scapegoat and read the book. 5⭐️ JAMAICA INN is on my Oct watch list of movies. Maureen O'Hara is one of mostest fav actresses. Then the 📖. I do movie 1st, then 📖 if possible.
Thank you for your recommendations in your lovely and heartwarming way! 💚
I read wuthering heights and I love it and I have the book is penguin cloth bound edition
Jamaica Inn is soooooooo good! Also, Hamnet was one of the best I’ve read in a long time!
Good luck with your TBR! I want to finish Strangers on a train and then read Eugene Onegin or Circé. Maybe Pride and prejudice. Who knows? Stay safe travelling! ✈ 🚄 🛵
We will always support this channel. They're one of the best
Truman Capote's Christmas stories are really good. I was trying to save them for Christmas, but I ended up reading them a month ago since I was so excited to read them
I just recently read Jamaica Inn for the first time as well and really enjoyed it! The story is perfect for autumn, really gothic and atmospheric. There's also a BBC tv adaptation from 2014 that captured the book really well in my opinion.
So glad to hear you enjoyed it!!
Thank you. I will check that version out. I am only familiar with the Maureen O'Hara version.
I hope you get to Jamaica inn. I read it this summer and loved it.
Enjoy reading 📖 your amazing and wonderful books 📚 love them all ❤❤❤
Is it me, probably 🤔! But- it sounded like you said,"Northern GRABBY"!😂 Not to knit-pic over anyone extremously speaking. But I like the nick-name. Could be "North Anger Grabby"! Anyone might be angry if someone was grabbing at them. Lol. Love yr channel. Loved yr visit w Ms Emmie btw.
You are so smart when approaching these books thanks greatly value your knowledge
December is the month to watch another version of "The Christmas Carol." I just reread the book in January?? And copied down a list of every version. I started w the silent version. Just a small segment has survived. I think there are at least 15?😂
Squee!! I love love love The Graveyard Book! So excited for you to read it!
I also read A Christmas Carol every Christmas. And The Graveyard Book is wonderful!
The Graveyard Book is great, this is my favorite Gaiman book! You’ll definitely love it

I am finally tackling my Frankenstein books. I have already read the original «Frankenstein» by Mary Shelley and «Angelika Frankenstein makes her match» by Sally Thorn this month. I am currently reading «The dark descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein» by Kiersten White. Then it’s «Frankenstein in Bagdad» by Ahmed Saadawi and «Following Frankenstein» by Catherine Bruton left. This is so much fun😊.
There are SO many familiar books on this list. I'm reading along with the Game of Tomes bookclub. Northanger Abbey was a re-read for me, and it was my first time reading Wuthering Heights.
I haven't read The Winners yet, but it's on my bookshelf (I've read the other 2 books in the Beartown series).
I put Hamnet on the christmas wish list that I've already handed over to family (they ask for one each year).
I'll definitely be reading Eugenie Onegin and Twelfth Night with you guys. (On the topic of modern movie retellings of shakespeare plays, did you know that the movie 10 Things I Hate About You is based on The Taming of the Shrew?)
I have that same edition of The Bloody Chamber on my shelf but I haven't read it yet. (I've read Bluebeard before, as part of Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes).
The Graveyard Book is also on the christmas list.
Ghostways is also on the xmas list (I already have Old Ways and Landmarks on my shelf but haven't read it yet).
I've read two Daphne du Maurier books (Rebecca and Frenchman's Creek) and she writes atmosphere so well. I haven't read Jamaica Inn though.
I read A Christmas Carol last year and the year before.
re: Miika, when you said "a quest for cheese, and an epic tale" I thought, are you sure you're not talking about A Farewell to Arms? 😅
p.s. pssst, if Italy is the place you'll be travelling to, especially Venice, I highly recommend reading The Passion by Jeanette Winterson before you go, or taking it with you.
I pushed myself to finish Hamnet because I did not like it at all, I kept reading it because everyone said it was awesome but I just could not like it. I finished but maybe I should have dnf it because I feel like I suffered a little tru it. I hope you keef loving it 😊
Carolyn
I speak for everyone here !
WE WANT VLOGS AND YOU IN IT 🥺😘😘😘
I second this! 🙂
I safely received my Fyodor and Homer - thank you for sending them Carolyn, they look absolutely beautiful, framed and hanging on my walls.
I'm currently reading the atmospheric Moby Dick and will re-read A Christmas Carol in December as always. In between, I'll see what takes my fancy at that time.
80 days left until the end of 2023
you've got time!
What a coincidence! I‘m also in the middle of Northanger Abbey - at 30% and also enjoying it a lot (I‘m not surprised). :)
aww i love the graveyard book 🥺
Carolyn, here in Brazil it's Spring, but looks like Summer. I really loved your choices. Currently, i'm reading some Shakespeare comedies. I finished A Midsummer's Night Dream, and i'm going to read Measure by Measure now.
I ready the same Bloody Chamber story collection last week. Loved it. Could not recommend it enough.
I was also obsessed with She's The Man and have been planning to rewatch for about two weeks now so I'm taking this as my sign! I also had no idea its a retelling of twelfth night so now I kinda wanna read that too!
The Graveyard Book is soooo good....I wouldn't go as far as to say it is my favorite Gaiman (that would be Ocean at the end of the lane) , but it is certainly up there amongst the best!
Hi Carolyn, I'm reading The Bloody Chamber right now and it is very unique. One story from the book, The Company of Wolves, was made into a movie in 1984 and is brilliant if you can find it anywhere to watch. I love it. Very magical and creepy.
Jamaica Inn is such a good story, full of atmosphere. I was lucky to be able to visit the real Jamaica Inn, where the story was set, in Cornwall, a few years ago. My copy of the book is from there. Love it.
Best of luck with your reading til the end of the year and also your travels 😊 📚
you really did something there with your makeup, so gorgeee
Happy reading, Carolyn and I hope you end up reading all of them!
I'm close to finish Howards End. What a book!!
Books I hope to read before the end of the year:
Wuthering Heights
The Mayor of Casterbridge (I read around 40 pages in the summer and put it down. I find the language a bit difficult. I'm not an English native speaker, but do read quite a lot in English. Fingers crossed I'll be able to overcome the hurdle 🤞)
Lord of the Flies
Pedro Paramo
Dead Souls
Madame Bovary
A Study in Scarlet & the Sign of the Four
I love The Bloody Chamber and The Graveyard Book is in my top 5 favorites
I enjoyed this video a lot!
Books I want to read by the end of the year:
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
Silas Marner
Everything Sad is Untrue
Paradise Lost
Sanditon
Ivanhoe
Othello
I plan to read about 3 more books other than those...to be determined
Silas Marner is a good one. Hope you enjoy it.
Highly recommend Lincoln in the Bardo for October. Also planning to read Jamaica Inn. Trying to finish Great Expectations first.
❤
Haha I'm taking a Shakespeare class at my university, and 12th Night was the first play we read. It does get confusing, but annotating does help. Good Luck 😊
If you do have time to read Jamaica Inn this Autumn, I highly recommend it. It is my favorite of Daphne du Maurier’s books that I’ve read so far. It is thrilling and perfect for the spooky season!
I LOVE SHE’S THE MAN 😂❤ I also own the bloody chamber and I need to read it!
Hey Carolyn, it's nice to see you again. Of those titles named I am only very familiar with 12th Night, which was the first Shakespeare play I saw, way back in the late 1960s. It is less funny than memorable, tho tbh WS always had a problem with comedy. He's better with romance IMHO, and sees its potential everywhere people meet.
I am currently reading The Dark Interval by Rilke. And I am saving War and Peace for December. Maybe a Jane Austin in between. Good luck with your list! Thank you for another great video.
Ooo such great books!! Thank you 😊
I forgot I own the Graveyard Book! I should try to squeeze that one in this month. I tried reading another from him and I didn’t care for it so hopefully I like this one. A Christmas Carol is my favorite Christmas story. I finally read it for the first time last year and I plan to read it again this year
I am joining in for twelfth night and Eugene onegin, since I have not read either one. So I am excited! I love Wuthering heights, and am in the middle of it for the second time.
So excited you’ll be joining!!
Wuthering heights being one of my favourite novels...I can't wait for your discussion of it with Emma. I love the Graveyard book also. You look so pretty with that eyeshadow! What colour and Brand is it, if you don't mind sharing. Thanks
I think The Graveyard Book was my first Neil Gaiman. Since then, I have read a few more of Gaiman’s books. Can’t say I liked all of those I have read but I really enjoyed The Graveyard Book and Neverwhere.
You should definitely finish reading Hamnet, it's been my best read of 2023 so far, I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it. I should be reading Rebecca and Northanger Abbey and Wuthering Heights but I'm watching TH-cam instead 😂 safe travels!
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on graveyard book!! I feel like everyone at least likes it, I've never heard someone say they diskiked graveyard book it's impossible 😅
Lovely as always, Carolyn ♡
the books I want to finish are
Magic Mountain
Candide
Death in Venice
Dead Souls
King Lear
Akira (manga series)
I hope Hamnet's novel is as stunning as the cover.
I enjoy Daphne's novels too, love the gothic atmosphere.
A Mouse Called Miika is soo cute☺
Wow, that is quite a list. I thoroughly enjoyed Magic Mountain, Death in Venice, and Dead Souls. Happy reading.
@@ba-gg6jo Thanks. I'm enjoying them too.
Wuthering Heights is wonderful ❤ I've read it four times. I'm a Jane Austen girlie but Northanger Abbey isn't my fav. Still enjoyed it.
The books/plays I want to finish by the end of the year are
-The Seagull and Three Sisters (Chekov)
-Ethan Frome (Wharton)
-Red Badge of Courage (Crane)
-The Sorrows of Young Werther (Goethe)
-The Collected poems of Marianne Moore (I’m 4/23’s of the way done)
-Snow Country (Kawabata)
-A doll’s house and Ghosts (Ibsen)
-Long Days Journey Into Night (O’Neill)
In particular Ice King actually referenced two plays by Eugene O’Neill in Adventure Time so I want to take a crack at both (the other is The Iceman Cometh)
Love She's the Man! I miss Amanda Bynes movies 😥
My list for the rest of the year includes:
- 1984
- We Have Always Lived in the Castle (reread)
- The Giver (reread)
- Frankenstein
- Rebecca (reread)
- The Little Book Room (reread; this is a really cute collection of short stories geared towards children, which you might like!)
I, too, can practically recite She's The Man!
idk what Kelly Link's introduction is like but I have the Vintage hardback edition with an introduction by Helen Simpson who quotes one of Carter's main critiques on the way her stories are often called "retellings" or "reimaginings." So, I highly recommend reading Simpson's introduction, too. I used to think that's what they were, too, before I read them, but then I read Carter's quotes of hating those labels and the misunderstanding of her work and was like, OH!
oh no, now you have me wanting to/thinking of adding Jamaica Inn to my end of the year tbr.... That seems great for November but I don't want to make my tbr too long or else I'll feel overwhelmed and not know what to pick up for sure! lol
Will you be restocking your rabbit print? I recently started following you and saw you talking about it and it's absolutely stunning 🥰 would love to have it shipped to Sweden (Fredrik Backman land)
Eugene Onegin is wonderful ❤
I just want to read everything that you talk about! 😅
I start War & Peace next week haha
Got the rest of the year to finish it xD
If you enjoy Ghostways try The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot by the same author, well worth the effort. A good vlog as always. Enjoy your travels and stay safe.
I am Currently Reading Little Women for The First Time and Oh My Goodness I am Sooo Loving It😃I Also am ReReading Roverrandom in Tales From The Perilous Realm by JRR Tolkein: Also Really Loving It😊I Want To ReRead The Lord of The Rings or The Silmarillion By The Same Author as Above. I Also Want to Reread Either Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Or Wuthering Heights For Autumn. Your Awesome Videos Inspired me to Branch out: Want to Read Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier and or Ethan Frome🙂📚Thank You So Much For Posting These Most Awesone Videos and I Wish You Happy and Safe Travels🙋♀️📚🙂
Miika - the mouse who knew too much... Ok I'm gonna see myself out, as no one probably got that reference 😆
she's the man is so goodddd i didn't know it was inspired by Shakespeare so now i wanna read Twelfth Night too lmao
Yesss hahaha
Autumn is my favorite season but I've been in such a reading slump for literally like 3 years but this year has been really hard. Ive only listened to audiobooks and read 3 out of the four heatstoppers in paperback, i haven't actually read any physical books this year and im really disappointed in myself 😢 i just dont have the concentration or motivation. I would really love to at least read one physical book this year, its just been really hard mentally for me to focus. Does anyone have and reading tips or recommendations? I would really appreciate it thanks 😊
Hi, I would like to follow your Dickens verses Tolstoy book club and discussions, but I’m not sure how to, could you give me some tips. I’ve seen some of your recorded discussions with Emmie but I would like to see some live ones, but I can’t figure out how.
I suspect their may be other followers out there who don’t know how to hook up with live ones.
I would like to follow the Game of Tomes series as well, but again I can’t quite figure out how to.
I’m 64 by the way. So I’m often not up to speed with all things social media.
Thanks Claire B 😊
I’ve never heard Eugene pronounced that way. Did you hear someone say it that way? I’ve only ever heard it pronounced u-jean.
It’s the Russian version of the name Eugene.
In Russian the spelling is Евгений
English-speaking countries are so lucky. They don't need to study English in order to read books, work, or other stuff, like non-native English speakers who are trying to learn English so hard so that they can get more opportunities in their lives, whether it's for work or for reading. I myself want to read so many books, but a lack of vocabulary causes me to feel uncomfortable when reading books in English. It's kind of sad.
I am about to finish wuthering heights for game of tomes🎉 and i hate heathcliff 😡
Ooo 👀
Wuthering Heights is one of the most brilliant books I've ever read but I loathed the main characters, they were awful people !!
0:30 omg why are you so quirkyyyyy omgggg so fuuuuunnnny
