    ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

Was a caretaker for my mom who died at 100. In her last year her mind started to drift but an old musical like this would come on TCM she would perk up and remember all the lyrics. Arthritis meant she could no longer play them on the piano like when we were kids but she loved to sing along. We lived in Chicago but every year in October for their anniversary dad arranged to be in NYC on business and they would take in a show or two so she remembered seeing them on stage as well as in the movies and would come to life

In 1958, my entire 6th grade class walked to the movies after having a box lunch at a public park in Las Cruces, New Mexico. This was our ‘graduation’ gift from our teacher, Mr. Donald Williams. What a wonderful memory. Thank you Mr. Williams.

I'm 75 now and first saw this movie at age 10 or 11. So powerful. I am in awe at how clean the movies were back then. No nudity, no rolling around in bed. No "F" word. Yet this movie / story is enduring.

Absolutely, could not agree more, I am five years younget than you and I exepct like me, you have seen this film many times, especially on TV and thouight it corny, not realistic, dubbed etc but now with the years now gone by, especiall;y watching it on my 66" Smart TV and stereophonic speakers how truly good it was. Simply, this film has magic, grandeur and romance which trumps all the rubbish films that come out now.

A hundred and seven dislikes of this clip, and here I am at 65, blubbering like a baby at the sheer beauty of this music and how well it fits the message. That should tell you something about where we are now as a society. Good thing I can blubber in the privacy of my own home; I'd hate to shame myself in public.

Don`t be ashamed to "Blubber" Benjamin, I am an 87-year-old, and I saw this movie at the Majestic Cinema in Leeds around 1958/9. I cannot tell you how many times I have played this number on my PC (and before that on my stereo set) and I shed a tear or two every time I see or hear this fantastic number. I simply cannot understand why Mitzi Gaynor was not a "Number One", she has everything, she sings, dances, (I have been to one of her cabaret performances), and she can act most of the other stars of her era out of sight, plus she is probably one of the most beautiful ladies ever to grace Hollywood.

My father made us put our hands over our eyes when the "sexy" parts came on lol. He was about 32-33 at the time. I absolutely love eveything about this movie, the sadness, the love, the music, the memories. I have watched it many, many times over and over. When I first saw "South Pacific," I was a teenager and "Bali Hai" bowled me over even more intensely than this powerful scene. But I later realized R&H accomplished a magic in this scene unequalled in any other musical. The music is indescribable, but visually, there is truly a "wide screen " effect that frames the scene perfectly. That and the newly launched stereophonic sound were used here far more effectively than in just about any other movie I have seen in the theater. The images of Brazzi and Gaynor together are truly iconic, to use a term that has lost its meaning, but in this case, warranted. The jacket for the LP (vinyl) with Brazzi and Gaynor on the beach was everywhere after its release, and is still so evocative of the era when this classic was so fresh and full of hope and "romance.' It is far and away my favorite record cover.

The movie received 10 Acadeny Award nominations. It won one Oscar - for Best Sound. As you may know, James Michener's first novel, "Tales of the South Pacific," was a fictionalized account of his experiences in the Pacific during WW II. The success of his book gave rise to his great career, to the play, and then to this movie. My father was based on the real island during the war - it was a staging base for troops who would move on to fight on other islands. He knew of the Frenchman, and saw the real island fictionally named Bali Hai in this story.

We had this LP when I was growing up, I think with Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza. I must heard it many times, and the songs left a strong impression, especially "You've Got to Be Taught", which I understood very well was about prejudice, even when I was about eight. I suppose that years later, in the 1960s and 1970s, I thought of this kind of music as a bit square or old-fashioned. But now that I have lived a bit and understand how precious and rare true love is, "Some Enchanted Evening" never fails to reduce me to tears.

The only time I have ever seen it. But thanks to the magic of the songs, the album cover and mum's descriptions, I can play the film ... the essence of the film in my head. It was shown on Spanish TV late 80s. I remember settling down in a cheap restaurant to watch it during dinner and there was a power cut just 2 minutes into the film. Kinda frustrating. But maybe the fact I have never seen it again is what keeps the movie alive in my head. As I say, magical.
