  • -- THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR MOBILE POLICE PATLABOR --
    In 1988 Sunrise would go on to add another Mecha franchise to their ever-growing lexicon of mechanical madness. What a sentence that is. Mobile Police Patlabor details the lives of the Special Vehicles Section 2 officers as they fight crime, solve mysteries and go about their daily routine. Taking place in the near future of 1998, bipedal vehicles called Labors have become part of daily life, and it's up to SV2 to keep them under control!

    Patlabor is a treasure. The series, OVA and movies all bring something slightly different to the table, but it all just *works.*

    Many mecha try to do "what if big robot was real?", but Patlabor is definitely the most authentic. It really does answer the question if mechs were real, and the answer is that not much would change at all. The lives of soldiers and police officers are actually quite mundane, and are only occasionally spotted with brief moments of action. The mechs hardly ever get deployed in the world of Patlabor, and when they do, they often just stand around while a negotiator, SWAT team, bomb squad, etc. does all the heavy lifting. Headgear could have totally made a hardboiled police mecha, but instead they chose to make a much more leisurely show that tries to capture what real police work would be like if giant robots were involved, and it is better because of that.
    I have two mecha shows I think you should check out; Full Metal Panic and Armored Trooper VOTOMS.

    • @Retcon404
      @Retcon404  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      VOTOMS looks really cool and right up my alley, it's just a long-ish show so it's a little harder to work into the schedule. I actually really like Full Metal Panic, I watched the original run of that show a few years ago and enjoyed the romance/mecha mix. Definitely a fun show and one I'll get to here.

    Patlabor was one of those series that even if it wasn't your favorite you couldn't help but love it. From ova to series to movie Patlabor hit a lot of good points and made it's world not only believable but fun to be in. And that's really what it's biggest strength was, being a fun ride. It didn't always make sense but damn if it didn't bring you in and make you want to see more.
    Also I'd like you to review the original Voltron series, since that too was a series that I watched religiously when I was younger. I think it'd be a great Anime Retrospective.

      ooooh now voltron is a good one. I've only ever seen the 2010's netflix one, which i know is a little hit or miss in the community. I'll have to take a look a the original sometime.

    Patlabor is such a gem. It blends action, comedy, drama and mecha so seemlessly. I often find myself struggling with comedic and slice of life anime, but Patlabor just creates such an engaging world with interesting characters that it sucked me in.
    Really wish we could get a new OVA or something. The movies are also just fucking phenomenal (the animated ones, not the live action ones).

    Hell yeah Patlabor time. So glad people are starting to watch Patlabor more than ever. What was just a VERY niche mecha show probably 5 to 10 years ago and hasn't really been big in the west since the two films (which were overshadowed by GITS releasing) is finally starting to see some traction again and I am 100% here for it.
    One of my all time favorite mecha series.

    The OST is 80s Z-Gundam/Bubblegum Crisis level awesome! Picked up the CD from BookOff a few years ago and it remains in constant rotation on my phone. Also love Yutaka Izubuchi's mech designs both here and in 0080 War in the Pocket. Captain Goto is one of the coolest chilled-out stealth genius anime characters of all time. Patlabor 2 the movie is one of Mamoru Oshii's absolute greatest works IMO. The OVA, TV series and 3 movies are all on HiDive (along with the GOAT space opera Legend of the Galactic Heroes). SoCal folks, see y'all at Anime Expo this weekend!

    I always compared the comedic eps of Patlabor to a Brooklyn 99 style Police ensemble comedy... with mecha

  • @twelfthknight
    @twelfthknight 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Patlabor is weird for me because I watched the Mamoru Oshii directed second movie first - I believe it was a dubbed version on late-night television - and while it's a phenomenal movie in many ways it doesn't represent the tone or characterization of the TV anime when I eventually got to it. Much more You're Under Arrest with mechs than Ghost in the Shell. I've never seen this OVA though, it looks like this version was Sunrise feeling out how far they could go while staying within Patlabor's premise.
    As for suggestions, doing one of the Macross series or OVAs would be interesting to touch upon as you progress through your Gundam series analysis given Gundam's influence on its inception and style and how its developed in parallel as its own space opera universe franchise.
    Maybe do something from Bee Train as well. Whether its Noir, Dot.Hack/Sign, Madlax, or Avenger. Bee Train had an interesting style that made them pretty memorable for the decade or so they were actually making anime for but at the same time they were also kind of ambiguously frustrating. Maybe I have feelings that need to be unpacked here, I dunno.

      I"ve watched Patlabor in order of Movie 1, Movie 2, TV series 1, OVA New Files (=tv series 2), Movie 3 and then Early Days. I was highly impressed by Early Days, even after all the Patlabor exposure I've endured.
      The OVA, Movie 1 and Movie 2 are real gems. The two TV series are fun and definitely recommended to watch, but the fact it is operating on a TV series budget and schedule is noticeable, still has some amazing gems like Snow Rondo, You Win!, SV2 Wiped Out!, etc. Movie 3 didn't really do it for me, but that might be more a case of personal taste. It just doesn't have that Patlabor swoosh, that while arguably not being that present in Movie 2, Movie 2 is just so well done.
