Only 3 rules to launching a boat:
    1. Put drain plug in.
    2. Check that you put drain plug in.
    3. Double check drain plug is in.

More importantly, don't forget to use the blower motor before you start it, so you don't explode your boat and maybe yourself. I've seen a few videos on that. I went out on my stepfathers friends boat. I asked him a couple times and he said, yes I put the plug in before we launched the boat. I should have double checked. We hauled about 20 miles of Jersey coast and barely any water came in as we were moving. When stopped and fishing he would periodically use the bilge pump. First time he did, there seems to be an awfully lot of water and it's still going. I pulled the engine cover off and I see the water coming in. Dan, where's the plug? I put it in. It's not there. There was a spare one in one of the side compartments. I jumped in and put the plug in. He must not have tightened it all the way and fell out. Good thing for the spare, 20 miles off the coast and I would have lost probably $1,500 worth of poles and tackle and be floating for a while. One of the many interesting days on the water. One time on a friend's boat, my friend Craig screamed, there’s birds up ahead of us. Steve says, hat's fine, they will move. No, they're standing. Narrowly avoid a new sand bar. Good times.

Not always the drain plug. My neighbor blew a freeze plug about 5 miles from the boat ramp. I went ahead to get his truck and trailer and had it ready at the ramp when he got there. On the way up, he told me he pulled his drain plug out and ran full throttle until he got near the ramp and put the plug back in. When we got it on the trailer, I pulled up a bit to let what water he had in the boat, drain out. Saved his boat.

In this instance, put the bow ON the ramp. Skip the dock. Sacrifice a little gel coat and glass to save the engines and wiring from going under water. Leave em running. Install the plug. Verify that the bilge pump is running. Get a manual gusher going. You can relaunch in 30 mins.

I have a sad admission to going back about 40 years or so. I went out in my dad’s 12 foot Sears aluminum with a 9.9 Evinrude. It was a very nice little boat for buzzing up and “down” the river. No problem when I was buzzing, but when I dropped anchor in about 30 ft of water and was just set up with my line for sturgeon, I didn’t think of the plug then even! I hooked up right away, I moved to the side of the boat(I was standing on the seat) and the few gallons, or tens of gallons, I never saw, moved with me!! I went in, the boat rolled over and down it went,,,,. The foam from the seats had been carved out to store the tackle boxes!!! I was wearing a life jacket thankfully. I reeled that sturgeon in as well, all the while scared it would ram me!! I had heard stories of this, but I have yet to substantiate those stories. It got close enough as we floated to the shallows that I just stood up, and took the hook out of it. Let it go as I always have with sturgeon. My truck keys were in the tackle box that was open and still mostly sitting in the big hole in the floatation,,,,,,. I walk 4 miles along to river to get to the house. I missed dinner, got hell. Then they asked where the truck was. I was terrified to say I lost the boat, but told the whole story all the while my brother and dad were laughing so hard they couldn’t stand up. Dad wasn’t laughing when he found that in a river where you can almost always walk in it for 90% of its surface, I had anchored in one of the sturgeon holes,,,,,. THEN I got the lecture. We went and got the lifejacket, which made him laugh asking why I was so far down river. I told him that how far the sturgeon and I floated,,, it was then I realized he hadn’t heard about the fish because he was laughing too hard earlier. It started all over again.
In the end, he dropped me off at my truck, I drove home and the next morning I woke up to a cab full of packing foam we had from the shop!!! That happened for a while,,,,,. We never did find that boat,,,,,,. The new one, and every small boat we have owned since has had the floatation foam left intact!!! I was never terrified because it was all kind of surreal that day.

When you leave the plug out: take the boat up to speed on full plane(level). That will drain the water out. Once drained. Cut power, full stop. Trim up. Engine off. Someone with a life vest jump in and put the plug in. Bugle the rest out.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
    Aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man,
    The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.
    The weather started getting rough,
    The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost.
The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
    With Gilligan
    The Skipper too,
    The millionaire and his wife,
    The movie star
    The Professor and Mary Ann,*
    Here on Gilligan's Isle.
    Full Version Continues:
Now this is the tale of our castaways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
    It's an uphill climb.
The first mate and his Skipper too,
    Will do their very best,
    To make the others comfortable,
    In their tropic island nest.
No phone, no lights, no motor car,
    Not a single luxury,
    Like Robinson Crusoe,
    It's primitive as can be.
So join us here each week my friend,
You're sure to get a smile,
    From seven stranded castaways,
    Here on "Gilligan's Isle."

When you don't put the drain plug in, ru the boat ashore. At least you can keep the motor out of water and dig a hole to put the plug in, then start pumping. It's easy to get a bunch of others that have been drinking to help push your boat back out.
Might cost you some more beer, but well worth it.
