After driving semi for 40 years, the best advice I can give to backing up is, steer from the bottom of the steering wheel. If you want your trailer to move left move the steering wheel to the left. If you want the trailer to go right steer the wheel to the right. It will eliminate all your double guessing

To be fair, the hardest trailers to backup are small single axle trailers. Especially when the boat or ski is in the water and you can’t see the trailer. The smart thing to do is to install pvc guides. Not necessarily to help getting the vessel back on the trailer, but to see when you’re backing up.

LOL! We often spend Saturday afternoons at our favorite local watering hole which just happens to have a boat launch beside it. We sit on the deck of the Pub and watch boaters launch their boats or pull them out of the water. It's astounding how many boaters are completely inept at this vital part of boating. I've seen vehicles roll down into the ocean, I've seen people forget to untie the back of the boat from the trailer, floating the trailer under their boat, or forget to put the drain plug back in, I've seen boaters trying to load their boat on to their trailer only to end up with their boat well past the trailer and sitting atop of their car. But the most common one is not keeping the trailer straight when backing into the water. I've seen people totally jack knife their trailer, sending it off the side of the ramp. And on more than one occasion I've watched so many attempts at backing up straight that I just couldn't take it any more and I've gone and backed their boat in for them. How they got their boat back out??? I don't know, I couldn't stay at the Pub that long.

Great comment regarding the dock has its own set of rules!! I can back a boat down the ramp even if the opening only has an inch or two on each side, be launched, tied up and out of the way in 5 minutes. Because I prep the boat AWAY from the ramp. This is with no help! It’s really easy. Now,,, having just started to learn how to properly dock a 52 foot Grand Banks Europa with only fresh water experience up to a 20 foot pontoon before, I took classes, have a couple of friends that have grown up at the docks and they have spent hours (too many hours they jokingly say, I think,, haha) making sure I can dock the boat at my private slip I rented at a private dock,,, came with the boat purchase,,,,. I’m getting to be ok, but it will take some more time to get really good at it. I don’t get sweaty palms at public marinas when cruising up the coast of Vancouver island anymore at least!! I’m just glad some of my early attempts were not videoed!! Haha.
    Thanks for the videos!!

You could have made some suggestions about reversing with small trailers which you can't see in the side mirrors until the angles become too sharp to easily correct. That driver was steering way to sharply as well getting him/her into an ever more difficult situation. Some sort of whip and flag attached to the trailer so you can see where is at. If you see the trailer in either side mirror, steer towards it to bring the trailer into alignment with the tow vehicle. It's unfortunate that small, personal watercraft, sized trailers are the most difficult to reverse. You can't see them in your mirrors (especially when empty) and the shorter the trailer the more quickly it reacts and gets you into trouble. I bet there are lots of TH-cam videos full of trailer reversing tips, but like you say, practice before you get to the ramp.

If you can't see your trailer in your mirrors I suggest mounting some PVC pipe on each side to wherever that doesn't interfere with loading and unloading that sticks up high enough for whatever vehicles you may use so you can see the pipe in your rearview mirror. You can even add beer holders to each one in case two hands are required to secure the watercraft so you don't end up here.

When I bought my first boat, I would go down to the ramp on rainy days and practice backing down the ramp because I didn't want to be "that guy".
Down on Cape Cod some of the locals bring their lawn chairs and coolers down to the boat ramps for free entertainment.

it all depends wind direction and if it is blowing and also the current of water also when docking and loading onto the trailer.

Because the ramp gets so jammed during holidays especially, instead of waiting a couple hours we modified racing go-kart pull stands to allow us to use a hand crank to pull the skis onto the stands then we can take them down to the end of the dock and slide them off into the water no problem. We have a 3.5hp engine and brakes so up hill or down is not a problem however we still use the ski trailer to load them.Have used the karts but it is extra work for no reason when it's time to leave unless there are tons of people waiting. The Kart is technically rideable with a hydraulic that lowers the cradle holding the ski down closer to the water or you can also slid it off with the tilt without lowering as well.

The "real reason" of ramp fails is people don't use a tow rope.
Before down the ramp, with the trailer and the vehicle perfectly aligned in the horizontal floor next to the ramp, I attach a big tow rope (mine is 10 meters / 33 ft. long) between trailer and vehicle and desengage the trailer from the vehicle.
Then, slowly, trailer and vehicle descends the ramp. The vehicle's wheels keeps always on dry and clean soil, and (relatively) far away from the water.
To recover the boat, the same: trailer submerged in water and attached to the vehicle (wheels well away from water) with the tow rope.
Then, with the boat attached to the trailer, the vehicle tows the trailer out of the water and out of the ramp. Reached the horizontal floor, I brake the trailer, reverse the vehicle, and engage the trailer to the vehicle.

Those boat ramps look to be about 15 degree angle? Here, they are only about 5 degrees. Invest in a mooring or a slot in a marina.

In the early spring on the opener you just about always have somebody who hasnt started their boat year this year, you know it ran perfectly when it was put away last Fall. The boat and motor are generally old and not in good shape by any means. When the guy finally gets the boat still on the trailer of course down into the water and they start unloading things out of the pickup and into the boat, food, life jackets, bait rods and tackle, you get the idea. Then the guy has to hook up the gas tank to the motor and generally tighten the connections on the battery, by this time 8 boats could have gone in and out of this landing and people are getting tense! Finally he starts to crank the engine over and it fires once then no more firing he has flooded it, well he cranks some more till the battery is dead and then about 5 guys who have been waiting 25 minutes to get out approach him and strongly suggest he gets his boat out of the way so they can get going. Luckily the guy see that these folks mean business and he pulls his pile of crap out of the way of everybody else. I almost feel a bit sorry for him but then no I dont, if you have NO clue what your doing then ask somebody or stand by the ramp and watch others do it but dont plug the ramp because you have not clue what your doing!

I have a kayak trailer that I used to pull with my 2dr Jeep JK. Now it was a pain, no backup camera and by the time you are able to see it it's already out of position. I now have a new 2dr Jeep JL with a backup camera and I cannot tell how much that helps. I was always embarrassed and scared to go to the ramp before but now it's a piece of cake. For anyone that doesn't have a backup camera and you're having issues it's worth the investment.

Was station in Key West and we where putting the boat in the water. I let the ex back up the trailer and before I could stop her she back the car off the end of the boat ramp. I got her to stop and keep the engine running, and they said it happens a lot due to the shape of the ramp. So they came out with a tractor and pulled us out. Last time she backed the car up at the ramp.

I love seeing people's reaction on the highway when they see me pulling a 23' Eliminator Daytona with twin eggbeaters at 75mph using my Historic (old) YJ Wrangler running 38's.
(It's hard to see while moving, but the Jeep was built for it with upgrades to brakes, axles, axle shafts, drive shaft, gearbox, transfer case, hubs, and a hidden load distribution bar that puts the tongue weight forward of the receiver).
