I live right outside of D C, and older gardening ladies taught me 30 years ago (I’m an older gardening lady now!) to add 1/2 pine bark chips, 1/2 compost to my horrible red clay soil. I end up with about equal parts of all chips, compost and clay. It really helps. I’ve been told no peat or sand, because it more or less can make pottery! Linda, at least your clay is a pretty dark color!!!

My clay soil in the Niagara Ontario area is horrible and has zero drainage. I plant high, amend with triple mix and mulch well. I’m hopeful my newly planted hydrangeas survive. So far so good. Great show Linda

I’m in the same area, I shred my leaves in the fall and top dress the beds. I mulch with pine bark. I’ve got three limelight hydrangeas that are doing fine, probably smaller because of tree root competition and they could use a bit more sun.

I live in the Waterloo area and we also had clay soil, we had many deliveries of screened soil to amend our gardens. Now the gardens are happy and so I'm l not having to dig in the hard clay😊

Linda, I am concerned that you may have ran across an Asian jumping worm when you were planting a hydrangea. Normal worms do not jump that way. Maybe keep an eye out for more. They are invasive, and what I have read is that you should capture it, freeze it and throw it out.

That was just a large earthworm. We call them nightcrawlers. It was just retracting into it's tunnel in response to the light.

Ciao from Italy. We have red clay soil, it was so hard to dig for the vegetable garden. I built from old bricks raised beds just a frame added sand and torfe every year, it improved a lot but after 4 years of tons of veggies decided we needed much smaller, so changed location and planted there pumpkins. I hope this tip will help to someone.

Linda your garden and home look absolutely charming! What a transformation. In my younger years I was a V neck kinda gal. however after my seventh decade arrived it was back to crew neck, elbow or 3/4 length sleeves. . . .eventually no matter how thin, healthy and well preserved you are, things go south!!

Linda, my hydrangeas do quite well in zone 8a NC . My soil is definitely clay. I amend the beds with compost and do plant high. Also mulch each year. For the most part I have no trouble as long as the plants can withstand our heat and humidity. Thanks for addressing this issue.

The clay soil in Illinois and Connecticut were such a struggle for me after gardening in the San Francisco Bay Area, where anything grows! I remember my neighbor ‘s fantastic blue- pink climbing hydrangea which spilled into my yard, and the bountiful Lantana that grew year round! Now I’m preparing to move to Coastal Connecticut which I k ow nothing about! We will be building new construction and creating a garden from scratch! Big changes and challenges. I’ve been taking notes from you, Linda!

Oh my gosh! I am laughing....My clay soil is red and like digging up a brick. Despite it weighing a ton, I dig it out and haul it into the woods and then fill the hole with better dirt and compost. Sometimes that doesn't work long term when the roots start reaching the brick soil. Over time I have added a ton of compost all over to get better soil. But, it has been a 30 year project!

@bonniemaciver I was also wondering if that big one she came across was a jumping worm. I definitely have them here in NE PA and they behave much differently than the typical worm. I've also noticed that the lighter colored margin on the jumping worms is up higher on the body as opposed to being more in the middle, which makes them easier to identify.

      @alyssapartlo4837 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I was thinking the same thing. I have an abundant supply of them but they haven’t eaten roots, they just take nutrients from the soil so I continue to amend my soil until more research is done and we can find a way to eliminate them.

I have clay soil too....like most people do! I know that you have mentioned in other videos that you recommend walking as little as possible in your garden bed , since it compacts clay soil. That is why we see you "hop" from stepping stone to stepping stone. I am guilty of this, and need to set down some stepping stones in my garden,

this was a very helpful video. I have clay soil in my garden. A few of the plants you mentioned i just planted over the weekend so I feel pretty good that they will take in my garden. Also- the tip about not fertilizing/watering as much is a great tip. I usually just keep an eye on the plant and it will let me know if it needs water. I do alot of container gardening too so I usually have to keep them hand watered. You're garden is really looking full and luxurious! Looking forward to seeing more as the season progresses.

❤ I really love the Hapi Gro however I had to drive from Michigan to Little Rock Ark to get it. And trying to get Lowes management on the phone or even to speak to anyone at OldCastle...forget it. No one has any answers as to why I can buy it in my state. It wasn't even available in illinois, wisconsin, indiana, and it's so frustrating when I go to my local landscape suppliers and show them a sample of Hapi Gro, they have nothing that comes close. What a bummer.

Hi Linda, Love your channel, I have learned so much from you not only in gardening but also dressing after 60 years of age. You have great taste. My question is, my father taught me many years ago to shove the running watering hose down into the newly planted perennials to get rid of all the air pockets. While watching the bubbles come to the surface, you can be sure to get rid of airpockets. Thanks for making thrifting so cool, I've been doing it for 40 yrs, even though it was looked down on. I would never have been able to create my new garden on clay at my age without my power planter (dewalt drill with auger) I only ever dug where I was going to plant, shoved a bit of compost in the hole then the plant then some clay and then I watered. Not digging over meant that there were fewer weeds which was good because in the worst places the soil is so sticky you can only scrape them off

They come in black, navy, green. Reg. Or long. I need long. I was thinking that if they did well I should.order 4 more pairs in different colors. At my age I am into comfort at least at home. Wish they made short out of same material because it gets hot where we live. By the way I have 2 of those navey Asian lamps and got them before you showed yours. I also started adding all the blue in my house around when you did. Lol lol. That's just a few of what I see we have alike. I told you sister from another mother! Lol. Yard looking good. I live in Colorado & we have clay soil - I amend my soil with manure - perlite- & my homemade compost - I mostly grow succulents cause I live close to Denver & it gets to hot to have special flowers . We have hail also so I have mostly ground covers perennials.I buy cactus mix in big bags to mix with compost - clay - perlite when I plant .. I also dig a large hole for each plant & amend it. I use mulch & in my garden I use real straw to cover ..thanks for doing this video - also I bought two metal hoses that u recommended & they are perfect- so light & easy to water anything .. the name is BlueBala. I need some more boots so thank u..

I love your videos and have learned so very much. Thank you. As for the pants, the link doesn’t seem right. Can you list the brand. They look really comfy.

Could that worm be an Asian Jumping worm? I was watching Visit Our Garden and Robbie mentioned them. Reminded me of that worm you dug up. 😮

They should watch Gardening with Creek Side to really learn how to garden in clay soil.

you forgot expanded shale. Expanded shale will permanently improve clay soil per the experts. i am into Baptisia and yellow flowers this year. What kind of baptisia do you have? i had an alba come back this year. i ordered a 'lemon meringue".
