Taking trips like this used to be second nature, just another way to enjoy the freedom that came with retirement. Back then, I could hop on an Amtrak for fun without a second thought, but inflation has really changed the game. Now, every adventure feels a bit more calculated because the costs are harder to ignore, especially with sequence of returns risk looming over my withdrawals. It’s like I’m always weighing whether I should be enjoying the moment or worrying about stretching out my savings. It’s a tough balance, but I guess that’s just where I am now
I’m nearing retirement myself, and I had similar concerns. I started investing later than most, and just relying on ETF compounding wasn’t cutting it for me. After working with a financial advisor, I managed to restructure my investments and am now on track to retire with around $5 million. If I hadn’t sought advice, I doubt I’d be as confident in my plan right now
I usually steer clear of recommending specific people because financial needs are so personal. But I can say that working with Emily Ava Milligan has made a world of difference for me. Hi Scott! Really enjoy your videos, but wanted to make a suggestion. For the whopping price of £2 you can ride the Witchway X43 from Manchester to Burnley. It’s a fairly short journey, but you could incorporate it into going somewhere else. The bus itself is AMAZING!!! Would love to see you checking the x43 out!!
There are two types of train providing the Dublin - Cork service, you were on the DMU service where First and Standard seats are identical but for the complimentary drinks & snacks. The significantly better seats, wireless phone charging etc with 2+1 seating configuration is on the Push-Pull MK3 stock; yes the windows are tinted but not terrible. I choose the MK3 stock service and avoid the DMU services like the plague. Glad that you enjoyed the visit.
Mk3s are long scrapped. There's only Mk4s and the DDs on the enterprise. The wireless phone charging is only on the 2 (out of 8) refurbed first class ones ATM.
They have much better seats in the recently refurbished First Class or City Gold as they are branded - but the ride quality of the Mark 4 coaches is still poor enough (Ireland's deep bogs are extremely difficult to run rail transport smoothly) and the brakes frequenty stick. They are made by CAF of Spain. Having said that about our bogs, Spain's trains are notorious for poor ride quality, particularly Talgo. The 22000 DMU train in this video is a Mitsui supplied Japanese train with much better ride quality and faster acceleration (particularly those with the upgraded gearboxes). If the 22000 Premier Class railcar had the seats of the first class Mark 4 it would be the best of both worlds. Ultimately, the long term goal is to have hybrid battery 22000s with upgraded gearboxes this is dependent upon trials have proven to be successful. These upgraded 22000 trains will be much quieter at stations with less engine vibration and faster acceleration (up to 1 minute per stop will be saved). Down the road they will be eventually replaced with OHLE trains in the 2040s on the main InterCity lines.
Just spent a long weekend in Cork and didn't find the accommodation too expensive. Stayed in the Moxy at Camden Quay and it was really affordable. Amazing city and definitely worth a few nights - easily the best city in Ireland.
The underpass to where the Airport bus goes is right beside Platform 1 where you arrived in station. You have to go through the ticket barrier and do a sharp left back towards the platform and it takes you to the underpass.
I did see the underpass as I walked to the bus stop. It's probably very obvious in the station, but when stepping of a train into a new station, there can be a bit of information overload.
@@PlanesTrainsEverything www.google.com/maps/@51.9015149,-8.4581755,2a,75y,274.66h,76.62t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1smnH9D-sPCsqNDOtpptvHwg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?coh=205409&entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTAwOS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D You arrived into platform 4. That's the subway to platform 5 and to the new interchange where the buses are.
The worst about the 22000 DMU sets (the type you were on) is that when you book online, you can never guarantee which direction you face. I prefer to be in a seat facing forward because I feel dizzy going backwards. I try to always get the MK4 loco hauled train to Cork because you are guaranteed a seat the way you want to face (plus no engine noise / vibration underneath the carriages)
I agree that the Mk4 loco-hauled is much better for the 3 reasons you mention. The Mk4 are older, don't have USB-A, and have the so-called blue tint, but it never bothers me and I hardly notice it at all. Another great Mk4 feature is the quiet coach, which you never get on the 22000 DMUs. Finally, if you need to walk the full length of the Mk4 train, you can do that, but the Dublin-Cork 22000 trains are normally two separate DMU sets coupled together. I really hope that IE can refurbish the Mk4 and the De Dietrich coaches and keep them in service until electric intercity trains are ready.
@@df9959 I think they are refurbishing the MK4 coaches. A few of the City Gold coaches have been redone with new tables and leather seats. Also, I think they dropped the City Gold branding and just call it first class, even though the tickets still mention City Gold. I don’t know if the rest of the coaches will be redone though. I prefer the fabric seating to the leather seats myself though.
The MK4 trains are a lot more spacious too, including First Class seats. It's just a more pleasant experience, which is why First Class is more expensive when an MK4 is servicing the route.
Aw brilliant to see you and Steve together....more please? Great video scott.train good value.woukd have liked to have seen more around the cities but obviously you would have had to stay...all the best till the next one...🏴🍺

Ah this brought back some happy memories of travelling on this line when I worked for Virgin in the 00s. I was heading to the Cork Megastore to assess whether we could use it as a stock processing hub for new stores in Ireland, instead of our hub in England. The conductor on the train was so excitable, it was hilarious. When we reached Mallow I seriously thought he was going to go 'pop' when he announced our approach. 'Mallow, oh it's Mallow, Mallow, Mallow, it's Mallow, next stop, yes, yes it is, Mallow, Mallow..." It was a beautiful journey in places. I'm from the north and my cousin is married someone from mallow, just outside Cork , and even I find the cork accent hard to understand, can't imagine how hard it is for foreigners 😅😅😅.
I've never been on a train in Ireland ... despite the fact I live here! ... been all over Britain on trains but never at home sadly. This is inspiring me to make a trip!
Loved the Irish breakfast!! In the tough economic times of the late 80s in Ireland, there was a great deal of Irish immigration to The Bronx. So much so that the street where I worked sported an Irish bakery, which offered an Irish breakfast early in the morning. They were amazed that I ate the white and black pudding along with the Irish bacon, sausages and beans. Great memory!! Chuck in Northern New England
There's good food in Cork. English markets worth having a look at. Great pubs and decent art galleries. But as you say hotels cost a bomb at the moment.
Brilliant video Scott , it was great to see Steve ( I follow you both ). I think it's time you did another video together . Keep up the excellent work 😊 .
Hi Scott, enjoyed Cork video, Heads up, re your comment Dublin Airport when you thought Ryanair were gonna use an Airbridge, flew Ryanair Edinburgh to Barcelona El Pratt Tuesday 1st Oct, was really surprised when we did indeed roll up at an Airbridge on arrival, absolutely wonderful, loving yours and Steve's travel adventures
Totally agree with you on the price of hotels over here at the moment. Absolutely ludicrous. And interesting to see that there was a trolley service on the train. I use the Wexford-Dublin train a lot and there's been no trolley service on that since the pandemic and no plans for it to be re-instated any time soon either.
All Cork trains have trolley service. Other InterCity services are expected to get trolley services by the end of this year. There's supposed to be a vending machine pilot shortly.
The story is that apparently the caterers got ridiculously expensive and the National Transport Authority rightly told Irish Rail that they weren't funding catering at 3 to 4 times the previous price. Trolley services need uncrowded trains to be able to move freely down the aisles. Irish Rail have gotten a brief respite due to the additional middle rail cars coming online. They'll get further relief when they increase the frequency to hourly on all InterCity services to cities plus Sligo in the next 3 to 5 years, but it could be brief relief if the passenger demands continues to grow. And a lot of the growth is happening on InterCity services (particularly traditionally off-peak InterCity services too) rather than the DART. The 22000 can support 10 railcars with a double-set but most of the station platforms only support 7 railcars and SDO isn't an option. I've heard no one mentioning lengthening platforms to future proof capacity. 230m is about the length needed for every platform for 10 railcars. If trolley services do get frequently blocked by passenger overcrowding (the 22000 can take 4 standing passengers per square metre of standing room) then they might have to reopen the 22000 Premier class cafés once again.
That was great viewing. Only visited Ireland once, back in 2017 and I got a horrible cough and cold the moment I landed 😂😢. I did Dublin to Cork but back then it was Loco and carriages. Was very scenic.
Great video, we would love to see you here again in Cork, we would buy you a coffee to get you back up to cruising altitude and on to your next adventure, keep up the good work 👍👏✈️🚄 E
If you book on the loco hauled InterCity train you get a far better all be it more expensive experience, reclining seats that are comfortable and way more space. The train you took is more like the British commuter trains and offer a "Premier" class, basically just a leather seat with a lamp at the table, services down here in Co Kerry offer these "Premier" seats at no extra cost, no reservation needed either. But definitely opt for the InterCity trains, way better in my opinion. That "Luggage" space is actually a wheelchair space as far as I know, the luggage storage on certain trains is poor, but again, the InterCity trains offer luggage space in the dummy car at the end of the train. Love the videos Scott and nice to see you down our way in Munster, I'm a Scotsman living in Co Kerry btw 😊 Just another tip, for the real 1st class on the bigger InterCity trains you can upgrade your seat to 1st class for about €25 onboard the train, subject to space of course, it can work out bit cheaper.
Its funny Because i was born & raised Dundee but now live in Merseyside and love watching u and Steve Marsh both great together u guys should do another one i love the one you guys did from Dundee round Scotland
Good video. One thing to note, if you were not aware of it already: Dublin Cork trains can be either the 22000 class Diesel Multiple Units or DMUs, which you were on for your trip. The other, which are more common on Cork-Dublin services, are push-pull carriages with a locomotive at one end. These carriages might have given you a better first class experience as they do offer 2+1 seating in first class, as opposed to the 22000s which only offer 2+2 seating even when you pay for first class; generally I would not pay for first class on a 22000 train for that reason. The Dublin-Cork carriage sets also offer a 3 pin AC power socket to people in first class but I don't think USB charging ports on trains/buses were a thing back then. Finally, the blue tinted windows you were afraid of are (or were last I checked) used on the Dublin-Cork carriage sets. Most Intercity railway services in Ireland nowadays are done with 22000 class DMUs with the following exceptions: 1) The Dublin-Cork train which has push pull carriage sets. 2) Dublin-Belfast services which have their own push-pull carriage sets that are about 10 years older and finally 3) some Intercity services from Dublins' Connolly Station to places like Sligo and Rosslare use commuter grade DMUs, they should be avoided as they're noisy and uncomfortable AF for a long journey.
Many thanks for an excellent video. Cork is worthy of a longer visit. Consider flying to the small regional airport in Kerry which has flights from Stanstead and a bus service to Cork.

I really enjoyed watching your video. My mum's side of the family originate from southern Ireland and some of them came from Cork.
what's your 2nd best story?
I'm from the north and my cousin is married someone from mallow, just outside Cork , and even I find the cork accent hard to understand, can't imagine how hard it is for foreigners 😅😅😅.
It was great to see the 2 heavy weights of Scottish TH-cam together regards to you both
I've never been on a train in Ireland ... despite the fact I live here! ... been all over Britain on trains but never at home sadly. This is inspiring me to make a trip!
Hi, am watching your awesome video, from New Zealand me am., have been in Ireland way back in 1986 be nice to get back there in the future !.
The full (add name here) breakfasts in the UK and Ireland may not win any healthy eating awards, but they do set you up for the rest of the day!
@@PlanesTrainsEverything Absolutely!! Lived in England in the early 80s. Ate a full
English when I knew the day would be grueling.
There's good food in Cork. English markets worth having a look at. Great pubs and decent art galleries. But as you say hotels cost a bomb at the moment.
the Holiday inn was fairly cheap in Cork back around February when I stayed there , 60 euro a night ..
This is another awesome journey with you from Cork to Dublin in 1st Class
and another awesome video Thank You.🚈🚋🚋🇬🇧:).
Glad you enjoyed it
Loved that you bumped into Steve Marsh, would be good if you could do a collab again
Brilliant video Scott , it was great to see Steve ( I follow you both ). I think it's time you did another video together . Keep up the excellent work 😊 .
I love both of you
Hi Scott, enjoyed Cork video, Heads up, re your comment Dublin Airport when you thought Ryanair were gonna use an Airbridge, flew Ryanair Edinburgh to Barcelona El Pratt Tuesday 1st Oct, was really surprised when we did indeed roll up at an Airbridge on arrival, absolutely wonderful, loving yours and Steve's travel adventures
You missed the underpass between platform 4 where you arrived and platform 5 where you would be so close to the buses.
2 legends meeting in the airport
Great Video Bud 👍👍
Totally agree with you on the price of hotels over here at the moment. Absolutely ludicrous. And interesting to see that there was a trolley service on the train. I use the Wexford-Dublin train a lot and there's been no trolley service on that since the pandemic and no plans for it to be re-instated any time soon either.
I think I was lucky with the trolley service.
All Cork trains have trolley service. Other InterCity services are expected to get trolley services by the end of this year.
There's supposed to be a vending machine pilot shortly.
@@jgcondron yeah, I read something like that, too. Still, a bit sad to see the shop disappearing, vending machines just aren't the same.
@@barvdw I see that they're often broken.
Fantastic, especially the 11 hour last leg Cork to Glasgow “adventure”.👍👏👏👏
Can’t believe someone has done that on TikTok! Great video as always Scott!
Great watch thanks Scott.
Watching this in Cork at the moment my old home town although I live in Dungarvan now.
Accommodation is always crazy in Ireland. The only time of year I get deals is the first week or two in January.
Love the videos Scott and nice to see you down our way in Munster, I'm a Scotsman living in Co Kerry btw 😊
Just another tip, for the real 1st class on the bigger InterCity trains you can upgrade your seat to 1st class for about €25 onboard the train, subject to space of course, it can work out bit cheaper.
Good tip regarding the upgrade!
i love your vidoes
Two legends 😊
Its funny Because i was born & raised Dundee but now live in Merseyside and love watching u and Steve Marsh both great together u guys should do another one i love the one you guys did from Dundee round Scotland
A pint at the weatherspoons at standard. Got to done. Love flying to Ireland, easy in and out
You n steve both brilliant in what you do 👏 👏
Oooh that lazy door at Cork Airport. Gets on my nerves. But great experience with Iarnrod Éireann, had only traveled 2nd class with them.
i havn't been this early since my cross country train was on time!
"Full Irish Breakfast" .... pass, no for me. Cold beans & cold hockey pucks 😢😂😂
Always ask for a Hot Plate I DO make's sense to me 😊 unless it's a Salad 🥗😅😜🥊🤸
great video as always, loved the behind the scenes bonus bit and seeing steve as well, will you do another collab video that would be cool
Superb video excellent channel
Showing a meal is one thing but watching you shoveling it in is quite another.
Funny guy on ur phone 😂 , looks worth the extra for first class 👍👍
Outstanding video as always Scott. Good to see a glimpse of Steve Marsh. Creepy about the catfish tiktoker - i have stood for a national political party and under no uncertain terms were candidates to have tiktok channels or risk de-selection.
Great to see my hometown featured! Curious as to why you didn’t fly Cork to Glasgow or Cork to Edinburgh though?
We stayed in the Ashling Hotel just across the Liffey from Huston Station, definitely NOT your budget hotel but well worth the cost. I swear the Guinness in there was piped directly from the brewery. Have to say the Dyblin tram network made getting around very easy indeed
Yes, Dublin does have a great public transport network.
I was in Scotland last week. It was raining and windy but the countryside was still green and beautiful.
Nice video, almost feels as if you are travelling yourself
