  • During my stay in Dublin to place the GMD Class 201 Locomotives into service I had some free time to do some exploring on the Irish Rail System. The Cab Ride pass was a ticket to some great experiences.

Delighted to see myself again after all this time! I'm the driver in the video and remember this being filmed like it was yesterday.

What an experience for our enthusiastic visitors. Drivers like Tony Power the backbone of of our system and wonderful representatives of all that’s good about Ireland and Irish railways. A lovely farewell hoot and wave as he powered up Killarney bank. Failte Ireland please note.

Great video. Glad tony power got to see it after all these years. Another driver who was 'sound ' was Tony Johnston , let me join him in the cab of 075 , from Bray to Connolly. In 1995 too . Great guys.

Railwaymen are a very special bunch and unless you’ve worked on a railway it’s difficult to imagine. Thanks for showing this video….I’ve travelled on the line several times but never up with the driver. The new DMUs might be efficient but ‘something’ has been lost now the loco hauled trains have gone into the history books. I’ve subscribed and hope to enjoy more of your work. Regards, Rob in Bournemouth , England.

A time when all trains were loco hauled in Ireland and the 201 Class locos were brand new. This was the same time the first DMU's arrived (the 2600 Class). Little did we know then that every train in Ireland would be replaced within 14 years and mostly by DMU's.

Love the conversation in the background "who'd want to be filming 747's when you can film this"
Little did you think that your video could be accessed internationally 28 years on through the platform of TH-cam!
    Its a changed World.

How exactly did 2 Americans get a cab ride in 1 of these? They dont just allow into the cab of a loco

1 American and 1 Canadian 😁 GM Diesel had sent us to Ireland to support the 201 class being put into service. In true Irish hospitality the Railway gave us passes that allowed us to ride any train cab. Most of the time we rode 201 class as part of our testing and observing there operations. We saw the branch line train when we arrived at Mallow and thought we'd ride some of our old power still in service.
