I'm Japanese who grew up in Japan. I think we prefer making windows small in bigger cities (more population), so no one can creep and see the inside of house. We can definitely make bigger windows in open land like this. I'm enjoying your videos Sundai! Thank you for taking us along with your journey!

@@SundaiLove Japanese Brazilian living here in JP. Thank you for this series! love it! as for using curtains/blinds I definitely agree that it's more for security reasons. It's really common in Japan to leave the windows slightly open etc. on hot summer nights so if it's a big ass window it's just too easy for uninvited guests to get in. Also my parents bought a house with lots of windows and they apparently need to keep the windows on one side closed because the friendly old neighbor next door keeps "popping in" from the window for a chat.
Here I am thinking folks got smaller windows to keep the cold,sound and moisture out( those look like single-pained windows to me)... I learned a thing or two in these comments

The Totoro house was fairly small(I happened to find a “real life” model with my kiddo on Roblox) I’m thinking more the upper dormitories in Spirited Away!

The good news is you don't have to do it all at once, but the bathhouse is so close you might be able to enclose it into an extension on the back of the house, and it would create a space for a private back deck.
I was thinking the same thing. Making a connection with the bath house and main house and maybe even putting heated floors for that connection for the colder months. The wall is probably load bearing but if it were me, I’d get one of the exterior walls knocked down and replaced with decorative load bearing columns to make it more into an engawa

Thing is, the plaster parts of the walls are not load bearing at all. It's like english wattle & daub. It's only the wooden posts that are load bearing.
Yes, i was thinking this as well! Changing where water/sewer lines go is way harder than changing where shelter goes. Honestly it would be kinda cool to have like, a mini-bathhouse

Just an idea: If you want to keep the bathroom house you could connect it to the main house with an indoor corridor like Tokyo Llama did. I think it would look really nice and you don't have to go out in rain and snow when you want to take a bath in the middle of winter.

I follow a married couple that lives in Japan. Rachel and Jun. She’s from the US and he is Japanese. They went through the same thing you’re doing now. They built their home from scratch. They incorporated American and Japanese things into their home. Example. They used American outlets in their home. They made sure they had plenty of outlets everywhere, House well insulated etc. It may help you in your journey with road blocks that they came up against and ideas you may not have thought about. Blessings, Peace and Happiness in your new home.❤

The difference though is that Sundai said she doesn't have the money to spend on buying a regular house, much less building her own with custom features like what Rachel and Jun did, hence why she wanted a free house that she can renovate. I'm sure if she got her way up to the number of followers that they have, she'll be able to build her own Japanese-American home one day
@@LittleRedPoppies I know Sundai is not building from scratch. I also know she is trying to do a lot of the work herself. I suggested the other channel for ideas and/or problems that may come up. Being that Sundai is American, she might like some of the ideas they incorporated into their house and solutions to issues that came up.
@@YECRED22I think it's a nice connection to have. Could be helpful to source materials, have some insight on the American toilet and bath situation.
As soon as I saw all of the extra space, I knew that was it. The house is perfect and you have an opportunity to have a full building office for content and shoots, a workspace to store all of your tools and equipment, and a beautiful guest house that you can have people stay in when they come. Not to mention is has the bamboo forest that you love, the space and plants, and the the privacy. It's awesome!! I hope they accept your offer and you can get to work on making it your dream space.
You and Ash having all these adventures in Japan are the best thing about TH-cam.
my husband and I are building a house in Osaka. I also HATE how small windows can be, but I made sure to get enough windows for sunlight. They said that people choose smaller windows because of privacy reasons and don't want people to be able to see in.

I can't with poor lighting, if for some reason I couldn't have curtains, I would choose constantly sticking and removing cardboard over tiny windows.🤣

Ive literally had zero support, no family and no dude helping me along the way, it takes a lot to do the damn thing alone. Bought my house last spring and im very proud of myself! Started a side hustle this year AND pursuing my career. I came from nothing as a foster kid and im certainly something now!💪💪

So much potential I love it! You can always use Workaway or WWOOF to get some helping hands. I’m sure people would love to come join and help you renovate this place for Free or very little money. Especially if they get to see Japan in exchange. I’m from Germany and I went to Hawaii to help renovate a Farm that looked like way more work. It was an amazing chance to learn about the culture, connect with amazing people and also super satisfying to see how the place slowly looked nicer every week! (If you start projects like Workaway..me and my girlfriend would definitely apply, we love watching your house hunting series.) cheers Sundai amazing video!

Yess, the Totoro house was an amazing space and all those outbuildings can become part of the main house with outdoor walkways if you have a vision, or studio space, office, guesthouse, so many options and don't have to be completed all at once! The land is unbelievable, what a gorgeous spot, hope you get it!

We had a mature cherry tree in the backyard of my childhood home in Chicago. My mom would send us out with bowls and have us climb the tree to pick them in the summer. Just had a nostalgic moment lol I love the one with all the buildings, it's a little village. I'd want a gate surrounding the property, you know, just in case Dexter came to town.
I’m glad you finally found a place, I’m pretty sure we all know in Tokyo it’s houses are on top or on the side of each other while you just got a HUGE 1 plot house with like 6 houses all to yourself which is a very lucky find in Japan, glad to see you striving

Are you going to make the red house a guest house??? Maybe turn the other two in to a work space, and a hangout space? And the main house is your cozy home space?? I have so many ideas, I’m sure you do too! I can’t wait to see what you come up with 💕
Honestly I think the place she loved has good bones she can turn the red building into a rental and make passive income or have been a place where patrons can stay if they wanna help her fix up the property, like when people fix up chateaus they have guest who volunteer to help restore. Then she can turn one of the sheds or the blue building into a work studio for videos or DIY projects/ construction. As well as the house is great it doesn't need that many rooms she can bust open a wall and make a bigger bedroom room or a bigger bathroom with a tub. Only thing I worry about is electric, wifi, and plumbing if that's squared off I would get it.

The last house. As a handyman and soon to be interior designer. I can see so many potential with that house and those buildings around it. Just of my head without looking to much into the land and layoute, what I personale would consider:
- repurpose the first open building into a Garage/workshop/storage.
- Remove the second little building and the blue building and remove the concrete.
- Remove stable
- repurpose the read two story building, move/strengthening weight bearing walls, and change the windows placement more toward garden area (garden house on first floor), second floor as a guest room/apartment.
- totally rebuild and enlarge the bathhouse and connect to the main building, and make it into a proper big bath house.
- make half open corridors between the three main buildings.
- Main building, tear it down to the framing and rebuild and modernize at the same time, do a bland of old-style meat modern interior needs.
- For garden, to make maintenance a bit easier I would make a bland of Japanese and western garden (perhaps with a style of traditional British garden)
That's how I would do it personally. But for them, I think the best would tear down most of the buildings except the first building as a garage/storage/workshop. And have everything else, either build into the main building or as an extension (is also the cheapest). But I would tear down the blue building and the little second building first, and temporary keep the concrete floor, nice to store building materials on and be used as a workspace when building/restoring.

For better or worse, kinda like you. Tomorrow we close on two properties (sadly, not in Japan but Chicago) and I don't freak out until after we sign the papers and then BAM the worry sets in. Usually it all works out. That last property you went to seems like it would take lots of planning and renovation and some money but then it will be fantastic for you. And spiders can be scary but they do eat other bugs...so there's that.

About the architecture charging: The only thing I could think of is the fact that the houses with the huge windows don’t allow for much insulation, making them less energy efficient?
