This episode was everything I hate about modern AVGN, but I'd say you should put it in what tier you think it should be in because it's your ranking video series.
It's interesting because this recent Sim City one is an example of what I hate most about modern AVGN, not very fond of that last Castlevania one as well

I felt like this video should have been more of a major celebration of AVGN and its 20 year history than a bland walkthrough of these games

Yea, I've been yelling at that clouds about that exact same thing. And then when he does the "Today... I'm gonna give myself a break and review a... good game for once... yeaaa" and then people seem to react like it's a great episode, to me it misses the point.
We've gotten to the point where the only way James can be somewhat entertaining is to deliberately humiliate himself. (As opposed to Rex Viper where he only unwittingly humilliated himself.)

I didn't like the episode at first but your opinion has at least widened my worldview in regards to it, so who can say where it belongs, it's your list. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me I ranked something wrong I could probably afford a pint.
First viewing on the episode just felt profoundly off, was F-tier worthy for me (not the worst of the worst though, to me Toxic Crusaders, Life of Black Tiger, and maybe Majora's Mask compete for that, felt on Mask it was the worst AVGN was as a critic, trying to shoot an old sacred cow but did not bring anywhere near good enough ammunition for it) but I also can see it just being a c-tier thing that's fine enough in construction, just not my cup of tea. I think a bit might be based on what you get from the nerd, for me, especially when I first watched him as a young kid that shouldn't have been watching him. He was like a time machine back into generations before mine, even if he mostly was showing the rankest parts of the period. It was nice to get perspective with the comedy, the difference to the scenes with atari/pong consoles and trying to get the phone charger is it's a dad joke in a way I don't like, where before it was him being pissed off at the 'good ole days', now its a standard boomer joke. I am not innocent to the Internet's relation with ponies, nor forgot things like Elsa gate and the momo scare so weird stuff in the app market isn't as big a shock like seeing Life of Black Tiger when it was first covered by Jim Sterling. As for the list, I always saw it as your own and say you should tier it as you damn well please, make it B, C, F, Pie, whatever you think it's worthy. Perhaps, as a far future endeavor, you could try a community poll to tier the AVGN videos.
Watching your impressions on this felt like I had entered a bizarro world where what I consider totally unbearable and unfunny is actually comedy gold. I wish I liked this epsiode even half as much as you did! And I totally don't mean that as a dig against you or anything, I just find it interesting how we have nearly complete opposite views with this one
hah, dig away! I hope I did a good job of poking fun of myself in this video. It's funny to me that my favorite episode in a long time happened to be everyone's least favorite so that's what made this fun to do

By the way...yes...BIG RIGS, TOKYO '97, SEAMAN...these are absolute peaks of the Nerd. My wife & I are also big fans of the TAITO ARCADE GAMES episode.
I didn't think the episode was bad. My least favorites are the ones with tons of toilet humor. I can take a little toilet humor, but sometimes he goes overboard.
Completely and utterly irrelevant to the video, but... The thing is, modern AVGN does (IMO) still work overall. Contra, the Last Ninja (iirc), Sim City, the last Jekyll and Hyde, the new Castlevania comparison, and probably FF6 (haven't seen it since I don't want the game spoiled, but James probably cares about FF6 so it's probably good) are all genuinely (IMO) very good, with worst of them being _maybe_ 6/10's and the best genuinely being modern classics... Only to completely bomb every other episode. Even if Horse Prince is (IMO, generously) not counted as a bomb, that doesn't stop the others from being so. It's like Dreamworks' consistency but with internet videos.
Haha, with the exception of Last Ninja, I think you named like all of my least favorite ones! :) It's all good, if anything the point of making this video is acknowledging that in some cases there's no accounting for taste and what a person sees and doesn't see in any form of media.

Dude , avgn has so many episodes and we all have different tastes and what we find great and funny , like one of my favourite episodes is the Atari 5200 but others it'll be mario 3 and some mad lads will find the LGN episode the best . We're all fans and we just want to share our opinions about what we like and dislike with hundreds of people calling you the scum of the earth

These kinds of rankings will always be super subjective. If you want to appeal to the opinions of the fans you'd have to do a gigantic poll or something. I think it's totally fine to just give your own and explain why you feel that way. Maybe "ranking" isn't even the way to go in the first place and every video should just be reviewed and rated? Anyway, my personal opinion about that episode was also very negative. I was never a Cinemassacre hater, always defended the show and such. I don't think of this as a "new low" or something, but there was just something off-putting about the way James was acting I think. Yes, he was overacting before, but I think it was simply too much in this one? Maybe the overacting in combination with the phone camera made it look even worse? To be fair, I didn't like his overacting in previous episodes either, I think it's always the worst part whenever he is trying to fake laugh. I don't think it fits the character in the first place. And sure, opinion will change, rankings don't hold up ... I don't think it needs to be this serious. So I "disliked" the video since I hope you'll just give your own opinion, because if I want to see the opinion of others I'm just gonna go on Reddit or something. Video itself was great btw. loved the intro, liked the idea of also filming this with a phone and the Spider-Man 2 joke of wanting to quit etc. Good stuff!
Thanks for the kind words! Yea, I mean the ranking thing is fun and for me the focus definitely has been the "review" part and making something that I think is entertaining. At the end of the video, hopefully it's clear that I'm acting a bit and it's not so serious, that's why I enjoy a bit of fan participation. It will mostly be my list, but I also like the idea of incorporating the audience where I think it makes sense and can add fun for the group.

I am kind of in the middle. I HATED PepsiMan. It actually angered me. I HATED Vegas Stakes...my wife & I still refer to that to this day as the worst episode ever. I disagreed with you on Jurassic Park Trespasser...I found the episode a bit of a mess, plot-wise...but found it educational (like some of my favorite episodes). But Horse Prince...I actually forgot it even existed. It was completely forgettable to me. Not that bad...but not that great.
Pepsiman was definitely a weird one, was a bit of a milestone episode for me too in thinking things were changing. I mean, I guess what I don't like about episodes like Trespasser is when there is the potential for something strong but then gets messed up by the really bad and incoherent writing. I think it would have been a lot better if the episode didn't try to go big and focus on the game development process.
I dunno, I do think it was on the bad side, weird ass choice for a game and all that; Im just not fan of AVGN doing modern mobile stuff. But there was definitively an overreaction against this episode just for the facecam gimmick, it was not that bad, just experimental.
Yea, I mean, I feel like if I was trying to make a "point" it would be that, a lot of the complaints about this episode existed long before My Horse Prince and for me personally, I think I'm at a point where I would take this over Sim City which I think was terribly bland and just a "walkthrough" of a popular game for clicks

James should just shave his head or wear a cap. When baldness is so ugly and distracting it's just not good for the channel since his face is on all the thumbnails.
I personally couldn't care less about the balding, but he should perform tattoo removal surgery. Why did he even get that "Google images tribal tattoo" in the first place? it looks freaking terrible.

@@marloges he's not a nerd though, at least not a video game one. The character was originally a parody of Matei and it's obviously all an act. James has very little interest in video games outside of the few he played as a kid (e.g. Castlevania)

@@marloges he's not a nerd though, at least not a video game one. The character was originally a parody of Matei and it's obviously all an act. James has very little interest in video games outside of the few he played as a kid (e.g. Castlevania)
