You mention something that hit the nail on the head: in older videos we go on a journey with the Nerd. James even mentioned in one of the BTS videos that AVGN scripts are written to give the impression of a live reaction. In modern AVGN all we get is a low energy description of what we saw or agonizing over having to play yet another shitty game. 2:59 feels like he isn't even in character.
Probably not honestly, for a couple of reasons. I want to start bringing back more content that isn't just Cinemassacre related and I also don't have nearly much to say about MM as I do with AVGN. Most what I have to say is "I'm glad he introduced me to some classic monster movies" that's about it.
@@SuperAnthony3 I also feel that way with so many episodes. I have literally seen them _all_ but I can never remember when they came out or what "era" of James it was. Was it side burns era? Pre-movie? Post-movie? Post-Mike? Was it pre-tattoo? Was it cameo era? Was it screen wave? Old room? 'Board James' James? That's the main reason I'm watching this series and I do appreciate this all being put together if not just to revisit. I already know which are gonna be rated amongst the best because I still remember those episodes and watch them every now and then. However, these weird one-off type episodes may as well be completely forgotten in my memory banks.
@@TheLockdownKidNYC This happens to me too. I get AVGN dementia. I could've SWORN that the Sonic 06 episode was from like 2010-11, but no. Another relic to eventually be forgotten from the Bimmy Era.
My favorite episodes are the ones with no fancy special effects or 'battles' with objects around the room - Just him sitting on the couch talking about the game.
Looking back at the episode, I thought that the guy from the Sega Tapes was more like a crossbreed of Billy Ray Cyrus and Max Headroom rather than being like a cross of "Foghorn Leghorn and Gambit from X-Men." Then again, that's just me.
Imagine discarding all your friends for Screenwave of all things, this is why I think James has no drive or energy anymore and it shows, I feel bad for him.
I honestly think Screenwave was more a symptom than a cause. James was burnt out and understandably struggling to make the content fresh so he brought on screenwave. As people noticed the content dip they became the scapegoat. It's fun to poke fun at them sometimes (which I do in this vid) but I do think ultimately by 2016 & 2017James found himself at a bit of a crossroads.
The Plumbers episode reminds me of my dad. He was rarely big on the stuff I'd watch as a kid, but sometimes he'd see James. And usually found him funny, aside from the skits. I remember him liking the Plumbers episode. If my dad saw an episode like Sega VHS he'd probably just be annoyed by James' commentary and be way more interested in the tape by itself.
This is one of the first AVGN episodes to truly bore me and the seizure inducing visuals during the tapes doesn't help matters either. The Howard Johnson's VHS tape had hardly anything to do with game tips other than occasionally throwing in the Game Gear to remind the audience that this even had anything to do with video games. This episode could barely hold my attention. I know it's not me hating humor or whatever because I can throw on a season 4 episode and laugh at it. But with this episode, not so much.
There was material to work with but sadly the jokes aren't funny and the reactions aren't funny either. So, you need at least one of those two things to make it work.
Seeing the plumber's comparison was nice and refreshing. The vhs episode was one that I watched once when it came out and never had any desire to go back to it. The plumber's video. I can almost do word for word thanks to how many replays it has gotten. Kinda strange that James seems like two different people in that comparison even though it's the same person.
Yea, I mean in fairness to him you change over time. Like the kind of out there humor and pranks I pull to do are not things I do now, so I get it. It was just a different energy back then.
@SuperAnthony3 I get that as time goes on that people will change. Just that the old videos aged so well because it felt genuine. Like James was a stand in for a kid in that time who just wasted money or a rental on a bad game that they are stuck with for the weekend. Nowadays James' writing and delivery just seem forced. Like he is only doing this just to please some higher ups. I know Screenwave isn't in the picture anymore but neither is James' passion
This is one video that I opened a smile when I saw it was released. These types of "not video game" or compilation videos were some of my favourites of him, even his recent ones such such the Amiga CD32 and Mortal Kombat videos I loved. Sadly, this was boring and annoying, the opposite of what I expected, quite a disappointment.
Thank god this buffalo dump of a AVGN video got ranked in the F tier . I wonder if James did plumbers don't wear ties now how it would end up , would we get the same kinda video or something really bad ?
Nice observation about the videos being hard to watch when the content discussed is already unbearable. I agree with that. Keep up the good work. Would love to hear you actually talk positively about a A or B tier episode for a change, but I guess we have to wait for that 👴🏻
I forgot the sega episode existed, and sadly I am reminded of it. I don't understand, james acknowledges it is annoying, so why are you having your audience suffer through it? This is your content!? I agree with your comments about how the older stuff made sense in that it was more immersive. I think this has already been addressed, in that hes burned out, trapped if you will. We're all trapped in the thing we choose to be our bread winner. Thats why mike is gone, not that i care, bc I believe it was mike who fired bootsy, etc. I can respect and admit avgn was better with Mike if only for well...everything, writing, directing i assume, etc. James left alone has only 📉 i know we all grew to love James or any online personal we enjoy, but it just goes to show, James was always just actor, NOT a film director (sorry james) and yes his forte was monster madness & his film talks 🤓 We ALL want to see a return to form, but i think we all know, its not happening. Come on, we got the fucking glitch gremlin...WHO ? Anyways, always good to see your content.
It's actually a funny thing I have to consider - like when I review a part that I think is bad or boring, how much do I keep to get the point across but how much do I cut so that the viewer isn't just as bored watching, say, Deja Vu as I was
When i said, "this is your content!?" I was implying james regarding his upload of the sega video, so apologies if there were any confusion on my end@SuperAnthony3

Yea, I think it's the key ingredient that made so much of his content special. It's a lesson I try to incorporate in my videos now when I can.
Like Jimmy vs Bimmy episodes. Makes it really clear how the show (and James himself) changed.
Thanks, I'll probably keep doing those where it makes sense and then make one long video out of it
@@SuperAnthony3 btw are you ever going to cover Monster Madness? I think a lot can be said about how it changed too

@@SuperAnthony3 I see. MM is the reason he changed his channel recently. The whole plagiarism thing.
@@odinetsthepale6581 yea, I think it was a bit of a wakeup call for everyone
This whole episode is like a fever dream. You remember it happening, but not exactly WHAT happened or who was involved.

his friends left on their own though. Slobs are just trying to keep the boat afloat, but the one sinking it is James himself.
