- An Indian officer's video giving Rahul Gandhi lessons on 'rashtra' at Cambridge University has now gone viral. Siddhartha Verma, a Commonwealth Scholar in Public Policy at the University of Cambridge, countered the Congress MP over the latter's reference to India as a 'group of states'. "You quoted Article 1 of the Constitution saying India is a union of states as per the constitution. If you turn a page back and look at the preamble, it does mention that India is a nation. Bharat itself is one of the oldest surviving civilizations of the world, and the term finds its origin in the Vedas, and we have a very old civilization. Even when Chanakya interacted with students in Taxila, he made it clear to them that they might belong to different janapadas but ultimately they belong to the nation that is Bharat," Verma is seen saying in the video. In response, Gandhi claimed that "Rashtra is a kingdom." "No, Rashtra is the Sanskrit of (the word) nation," the officer is seen saying. "The word nation is a western concept," Gandhi is heard saying in the video. Watch for more details.

Rahul is right. Verma's understanding is also right but flawed for a nation-state like India. It is easy for a NATION to make a constitution, but it is not easy case for NATIONS to make a constitution. That's why India is correctly described as "Union of states" in the constitution; our framers of the constitution were aware of this distinction between "nation" and "nations".

Literally no movement do you see? Which essentially means, if the government would not have changed in 2014, UP would still have become the 2nd best contributor to the economy because the frameworks were already in place. Simplest example is Ganga expressway. When did it start? In 2007, when Congress was at the center. And who marketed it? What was supposed to reduce was the poverty rate that has not moved at all. What was supposed to improve was the literacy rate that has not moved a lot in the past 10 years. To understand the performance of a government, one first needs to understand what to measure and how to measure. Though I know that marketing makes look things differently.

The scholar was wrong in his terms, Adhi Shankaracharya and all other vedic scholars called the whole indian subcontinent as Bharatha Kanta and never a Bharatha Rashtra. We were a union of kingdoms then and are a union of states and will be the same, and there is nothing wrong in it. We have unity in diversity as Indians. Even during Covid we have seen the PM taking interest in well-being of every state and took multiple all-state meetings to discuss how much work has been done so far. I haven't seen such proactiveness in other PMs before. Modi is more decentralised person than anyone else. But because you see him doing stuff and him everywhere, you feel he's a centralist. Well that's his job. To organize the states' chaos and portray India as a one-nation.
