In Hong Kong you can speak english with people and be understood by people. In Macao no one understands english except hotel staff or staff in tourist attractions and sometimes the staff in the casinos, don't expect anyone on the street to understand english, including taxi drivers. I thought it would be like Hong Kong but it's not, the vast majority of tourists come from the mainland. In the mainland I hear that basically no one understands english, especially outside of shanghai and beijing
