      As someone who has dabbled in game design, I always thought it would use up an unnecessary amount of resources to have both versions playing simultaneously so that the game could shift back and forth between both versions so smoothly, but it doesn't seem to affect the gameplay at all.

    • @MatthijsvanDuin
      @MatthijsvanDuin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@DamienBlade Playing a few (or a few dozen) audio tracks really doesn't require all that much resources. Besides, you only need to have both tracks playing during the crossfade.

    • @DamienBlade
      @DamienBlade 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MatthijsvanDuin the reason I thought it was playing both simultaneously was because they have to totally in sync for the effect to work properly. I'm sure they could probably do it just using basic timing, but that seems like it would have it's own problems.

    "Dependent Weakling" is what runs through the mind of the boss. They see themselves as that, a dependent weakling, frustrated, with nothing but rage at their core, they fight you because there's nothing else they can do.
    I love how this track portrays that frustration, that rage, that turmoil.
    Dependent Weakling is a great title.

Lose your reason for living, suddenly its frighteningly easy to lash out and hate everything since nothing fills the void that what you loved most did.

    The 8-bit version is actually in the game when you "hack" an enemy you play this old school bullet hell mini game and the 8-bit version plays. When you win and leave the mini game, it goes back to the orchestrated version of the song. There's both versions for all the songs

      I will never get over how cool that is. I remember noticing it in-game and gushing over it for a while. I didn't like playing as 9S as much as 2B for probably obvious reasons (no, not the 100,000 polygons), but imo even the "weakest" parts of that game are incredible. The cool thing about the Nier Automata soundtrack is that every Track has three or four versions which are all running at the same time, but with all but one muted. There is usually one calm instrumental version, one more epic with more instruments, the vocals and an 8-bit version and the game can transition from one version into another seamlessly depending on the situation. An easy example of this was the beginning of the original Nier where a calm version of Song of the Ancients is the towns background music, but when you walk near an NPC who sings and plays the guitar, you can hear the vocals of the track too, depending on how close the NPC is.
    Other gameplay purposes can be that you change from exploring to fighting, or even into an epic boss fight. Another is when the second main character, 9S, starts hacking an enemy, the music transitions into the 8-bit version and back.

    Both nier and Mgr run their bgm simultaneously in different variations but always at the same timestamp so the engine just switches audiochannels and the dynamic change happens. It's kinda funny that this feature is so underused in today's gaming as it's literally possible to emulate in the rpg maker 2000 software...

    So to give some lesser spoiler context as to the name for this track. This plays for the games first "final" boss (nier can be weird and there are multiple final bosses). Essentially earlier we kill thier brother who was the brains of the operation and now the other lost thier purpose and is essentially throwing a MASSIVE tantrum...hence the title "dependent weakling".

    It's a bit intertesting thing regarding songs in Nier Automata - because one of two main characters is a Scanner Unit (9S), he has ability to scan and hack enemy units. When he does so, entire battlefield changes and music changes to the simple shapes and game turns into 2d shooter. Music in this mode also changes to 8-bit rendition dynamically.
    In general Nier Automata OST is way more epic in scale than in original Nier. I am not sure if anybody on Patreon requested you to react to Gods Bound By Rules, which is from original but still one of most epic themes I've heard.
    After release of Nier Replicant ver.something something Square became more agressive on defending their IP and keeping Nier OST to their chest - just a half year ago I was able to download any version of game's OST in any way I wanted... Now it's WAY harder to do and they do not deliver vynils to my country T_T

    I loved your statement about video game music. Some days I feel like listening to ffxiv or bloodborne or nier music instead of listening to any sorts of contemporary bands. Video game music has a way of capturing emotions just the same as any other music you'd listen to, and sometimes carry even greater weight because of the stories you experienced with this music in the background. And man, some of these composers are mind blowing

    This is actually just like all the other NieR songs you've heard, you're just listening to the combined version of one for once. Every NieR song has about 4-5 versions because the game has them all running at the same time, with only one being audible. When you transition boss phase or go to a different part of the map etc it transitions the song to one of the other ones in the background.
    Spotify has this combined version available for the whole soundtrack.
