    This boss has an interesting history.
    Originally, they were part of a short story released outside of the game, but the whole short story got adapted into actual game content for the recent remaster.
    It also sort of shows as that mini-arc of the game is way more dialogue heavy and the boss has way more cutscenes and setpieces compared to the rest of the game.

    • @gbtygfvyg
      @gbtygfvyg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      This boss and the entire scenario was actually cut content from the game that they adapted into a short story so they wouldn't lose the plot point. Same thing with ending E although I don't believe ending E was cut content in the first place and was just a canon short story that was put into the game.

    • @Chocomunchie

      @@gbtygfvyg Yeah, Ending E was the sequel novella that they decided to put into the remaster, and that was a great decision.

    The fun thing about boss music in NieR, and automata, it always suits the battle, which is impressive because when you first do most boss battles in NieR you are missing the true context, but the song feels right with or without it. A vague example would be something like a boss having music with sad undertones, your first encounter it fits because you think the boss just killed a character. Then you get the context, the boss didn't kill the character, instead it was just nearby and trying to protect its friend, now the music fits for a whole new reason, you're persecuting someone innocent and by extension killing its friend. Worst of all, you have to do it regardless because intentionally or not they stand in the way of your goal.

    This is one of the most brutal boss's I've ever fought in terms of my emotions being utterly destroyed and left sad and depressed.
    Though that's kind of a common theme with Nier games. They make you have emotions whether you want them or not.

    • @ewybean
      @ewybean 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      couple that with the fact that this song originated from the lighthouse lady who already has a sad history leading up to the postman/mermaid arc ahhh

  • @kuroganekaze
    @kuroganekaze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    So sadly there's a part missing from this song that plays somewhere around the middle. The boss puts everyone in a near-death state and starts charging an attack and the music changes for it iirc. But also interesting is that while the boss is charging the attack you can see angelic script which can actually be translated. Translation bellow because of spoilers if you're curious.
    The script can be translated to "I want to be human."

    This is one of my favorite songs from the NieR series. There's something different about how Eastern game studios view the role of music in video games that just seems to be missing from most Western games, and it's a real shame. I hope we'll see more Western devs studios give music the attention it deserves.

    • @Elyakel
      @Elyakel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think western studio see music more like ambiant thing
      Japanese saw music as gameplay/story driven thing and i think it's the best way to do it ( like in cinema it's the same thing but more present in japanese game nowadays , even if old japanese games does it too , old game have tendency to use leitmotif like Soken does , look at the old FF for reference or Chrono trigger )

    Fun Fact: This Boss (The Mermaid), the First Set of Armored Bosses (Hansel and Gretel), and a Dreaming Computer Tree (Sleeping Beauty) are Little Holdovers from the Original Concept for this game (that was scrapped pretty early on in production) that had a theme more centered around Fairy Tales.
    Obviously this wouldn't of been Disney's Renditions, more based off the Horror Story that are the Originals... (Seriously though the Originals for Fairy Tales are some Nightmare Inducing Stuff)

    In terms of mechanical difficulty, this boss isn't too bad. She does tend to hit you a lot, but I never felt in true danger. I'd say a 4 or a 5/10. In terms of difficulty keeping morale & emotions in check, I'd put this at about an 8.5.

  • @Rhekara
    @Rhekara 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The series is a bit chaotic (like it’s music) in terms of progression and each game has multiple endings.
    It all started with the PS2 game Drakengard: Ending E leads into the world of NieR Gestalt/Replicant, originally released in 2010.
    Gestalt was released in the west and follows “Father NieR” whilst Replicant was released in Japan and follows “Brother NieR”.
    NieR ending D then leads to the world of Automata and expanded upon via novels, musicals and other media.
    The NieR replicant you see here is a recent remaster that was released of the original game!

    Replicant is the most recent game and a remaster of the older version (sometimes called Gestalt as well depending on where it released) that is technically a prequal to Automata, the Nier crossover raid in FF14 starts Automata themed then replicant bosses show up and by the end it is Drakengard themed, which was the original game series that spawned the Neir series out of a joke ending.

    • @Shiro2809
      @Shiro2809 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      nitpicky correction: Nier Replicant isn't a prequel, it's just the first/original game remastered. a prequel is a thing that's made after something and that takes place before the original thing.

    This was my first ever game I played by Yoko Taro, only NieR Gestalt. (Which is basically the exact same game when it was originally released only they replaced the main character with an older man, the supporting younger girl is your daughter instead of your sister.) Playing the remade Replicant was a heck of an experience when I played this, it was brand new and I didn't expect any new content. Gestalt remains my uncontested favourite game, personally speaking. Mechanically, visually and such there are better games but on a personal level - nothing can top it.

    Hey Jesse, good job on all these reactions man, you are awesome!
    Just wanted to say there is another version of this song called "Fleeting Words - Family" that I think is worth a listen (doesn't have to be a reaction, but if you liked this you should give it a listen). It's a bit more melodic I would say and more emotional. Probably my favourite OST in NieR Replicant.

  • @gbtygfvyg
    @gbtygfvyg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure if anyone mentioned it but in the original NieR for the Xbox 360 and PS3, this was actually cut content that never made it into the game. When they did the remaster NieR: Replicant v1.22474487139... they went ahead and put this back into the game including making new music for it AND voice acted since they made EVERYTHING voiced (even one-liners from NPCs you probably won't ever talk to) which the original didn't do; only "important" scenes were voiced in the original. They didn't even reuse voice lines, everything was rerecorded with all the original voice actors/actresses too.
    Edit:
    But yeah this was easily my favorite track in the remake, every single version that showed up too which is like 5 different versions...

  • @Anddroiden
    @Anddroiden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    So hey i would highly suggest just checking out the first bit of the Ishgard theme in FFXIV "FFXIV OST Ishgard Day Theme ( Solid )" just because Fleeting Words has a cool musical reference to the track since NieR: Replicant 1.22 was made during the NieR: Automata crossover in FFXIV and since this track is completely original to the remake (1.22) Okabe added in this reference to the Ishgard theme.

    • @QuercusPrime

      I'm glad you mentioned this. Also, perhaps it could be a coincidence, but in 1.22's "Deep Crimson Foe" there is a certain familiar descending and ascending (like in Prelude) that wasn't present in the original version.

    • @Reshapable
      @Reshapable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wolfspledge1762 I mean... no thats not a coincidence. Musical coincidences definitely do happen, but not within the same parent company, actively (as of time of release) crossovering games, with two directors that are good friends and both very involved in the music of their games. In a new track made after the crossover was decided. The only way to claim coincidence there is by clinging to the technicality of it not being outright said. Which is like needing someone to tell you it's raining.

    Automata is the sequel to RepliCant. NieR is the series and the name of the RepliCant protagonist. The NieR franchise is a spinoff of Drakengard.
    This fight in particular is new content added to the remake RepliCant got because Automata was such a massive success. The game was expected to be niche and forgotten, basically square humouring one of their directors. It ended up selling 4 million copies worldwide.

    "I don't know the name of this character" made me laugh, he doesn't actually have a name. Most people refer to him as Nier, but in everything he's just "Protagonist".
    Nier Gestalt/Replicant (and the remake) are some of my favorite games, and the music is outstanding in them both as you're learning. And whilst the bosses are necessarily hard they're quite depressing when you know the story behind them. The games are probably the most depressing ones I've seen, lol.
    Fun fact about the protagonists in Yoko Taro (the main guy behind the Nier games), they always suck. In the Drakengard games you have rapists, pedophiles, cannibals, etc... as part of your party. Nier isn't much different it's just a bit more subtle and in a way you can mostly empathize with.

    • @ReiEmeraldTakedo
      @ReiEmeraldTakedo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. Protagonist in Nier is a HUGE bigot against the shades. If you don't attack the first shade he encounters, it never fights back. None of them will. You can't continue the story without killing it, but it says a lot that they never actually attack him until she's proven he'll kill them just for being a shade.
      Mind you, replicant doesn't have bad guys as party members. Kaine is a victim of bigotry. Being a half shade is really just an allegory for being intersex. Which was why the town she grew up in originally exiled her. And our best skelle boy is actually just a victim of genetic engineering. His story is incredibly sad, and he often shows a level of remorse for their attacks on the shades that protag never does.
