The Uptown Records Story Part 5: Not everyone at Uptown Records was a success!

  • The Uptown story starts with its founding in 1986 via a $75,000 deal with MCA for a compilation album and effectively ends with Andre exiting to run Motown Records with a contract worth millions.
    Jimmy Jenkins, also known as Jimmy Luvs or “JLuvs”, had previously been the Vice President of Uptown Records alongside Andre’ Harrell.
    Jimmy “Luv” Jenkins - “Andre was the visionary of every record label that came behind us. The blueprint was Uptown. Without him, the spirit of the party ain’t go be the same because through any tragedy or anything we always party. That’s how we grieve, that’s how we celebrated, and that’s how we love.”

    I think Chris's only album with Uptown, "Changes", is so underrated. It's actually a very good album. Uptown didn't do a good job with promoting it, which is probably one of the things that made Chris upset with Uptown.

      I totally agree with you. There's so many good songs on that album, that should've been released. For example, "Good Love" with Mary J. Blige and my other favorite "Where Is The Love"

      @@djkellykel3383 Yup. Releasing "Good Luvin" as a single would have done the album some good. My favs are "Don't You Want To Make Love", "When a Fool Becomes a Man", and "Please, Please".

      But remember, he said we were getting ready to take Christopher Williams to number 1, but he messed up the plans by becoming unmanageable. Didn't attend promotions.
      Tony Thompson had the same problems with his album due to drugs and not promoting the album in person, which back then was more important than how it is now

    I definitely do not remember Nesto. Sidenote... I feel like Monifah is rarely mentioned regarding anything Uptown. Would be great to get her on here.

    • @HalftimeChat
      @HalftimeChat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She was signed by Heavy D before he left the business side and returned to music. By this time most of the old guard had left before she was signed

      @clarkkent502 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Halftime Chat yeah I know she was signed by Heavy, but I always thought she was signed at least by late 1994/early 1995 since her first album Moods...Moments dropped in 1996. I remember last year when Andre Harrell passed she did an interview where Monifah said Andre told her she could be the Black Madonna (😂). In any event I love that era and I’m glad I found your channel, you help bring back so many memories. 🙏🏾

    Nesto Velazquez had that song Personality. It was so dope at the time it was released for local radio play in New York. If any of the tracks on his album had that type of flavor, Uptown Records dropped the ball by not promoting it.

    @halftimechat you’re doing good work over there in the UK 🇬🇧 Horace Brown had some bangers on Motown. Things We Do For Love featuring Jay-Z was crazy along with One For The Money and Why Why Why! His Uptown release Taste Your Love was a nice R&B groove that had R&B fans waiting for him to blow up! Fun Fact about Ronnie Henson is that my former deejay and friend Hobo Scratch from Baltimore brought Ronnie to Uptown Records/Motown. He was so excited about the deal because he was his manager and a former street team promotions guy. However, somehow he got cut out of the deal and Ronnie Henson never blew up anyway. I was actually in his video What Are We Gonna Do as part of the posse back then! Amazing how many years have gone by since all of this. Keep up the great work 💯👍🏽

      @@HalftimeChat Yup. In Chris's Unsung episode, he admits to not wanting to be involved in music industry politics, not promoting himself to a certain extent, and smashing up Uptown's office when he didn't get the money he thought he was owed. I think Andre said that it was nothing that Uptown could have done for Chris after he blew up at the office.
