It's actually freaking crazy how relevant his thoughts and ideas are today, 2500 years later.
we're humans after all, our nature doesn't seem to change.
People then didn't see or didn't want to see the flaws of democracy, regardless of warnings (this is a constant phenomenon when it comes to humans and happens regarding almost anything we do), so now we are down in the rabbit hole and people still won't listen, devilish little cycle. In my opinion, we need a devastation so we can rebuild hopefully with much more philosophers, or people who can and will think rationally.

you saved me from failing my political philosophy class. i was literally crying the night before my exam because nothing was going into my brain when i found you guys' channel, and binge watched everything until 3am. the animation really helped me remember the information since i am an extremely visual learner. read through my own notes multiple times on the bus ride to school, went into my 9am exam the same morning and passed with flying colours. thank you school of life.

@@gmc1413 Those who think school is about passing are destined for mediocrity. An average uninspired mind can remember facts for a few weeks enough to pass an exam, but it is only after you graduate that you will realize you have learned nothing.
Plato would call you a working class slave, destined to serve greater men like Auxiliaries and Philosopher Kings who actually love wisdom and knowledge and take the time and put in the effort to read and understand the lessons of the past and take that knowledge into the future.
You would not have the right to vote in Plato's Republic, but you probably wouldn't care because you don't really understand the point of that anyways, having never had a desire to learn, nor attended any free lectures because it seemed like too much of a chore, instead of the yearning for wisdom and knowledge that it should be.
You pass the exam, but fail the test, because the real lesson from Plato is:
"The unexamined life is not worth living"

+Kira1Lawliet But that's the thing - it did change. It got worse. In technology, we matched the Greeks and Romans in about the 1800s. In political, social and philosophical advancement we are in many ways behind them. Some things are better - healthcare, for example (In Britain anyway). But many ways we equal them at our very best and fall far short at our average.
Some people don't have slaves. Some woman have rights. Unfortunately there are still far too many places in the world where both of your statements do not apply.
My sister was doing research on slaves, and apparently a slave in I think the 17th or 18 century cost the equivalent of $40,000 dollars. However now the average slave costs only $90.
Robert Afoa I agree with you in some ways, but I don't really think that it is the best in terms of opportunity - it's just advertised to look that way. The lower jobs in society may have gotten better (i.e. office jobs rather than manual labour) but the pay gap between rich and poor is bigger than it has ever been(In Britain anyway). The world is described as meritocratic, but I really don't think it's all that good at being fair.
I still like Socrates more. He was a stubborn old jerk who literally killed himself to make a point.

+cocoarecords At his trial (for corrupting the youth and not honoring the gods) he didn't resort to sophistry, even though doing so probably would have mitigated his sentence to banishment. He basically said "I'm old and gunna die soon anyway, so allow me to carefully explain how wrong you all are."
Even in the brief time before he drank the poison, his friends pleaded with him to escape. While he could have bribed his way out and gotten away, he chose to go through with the execution and was pretty damn jovial about it.
Basically, the "point" was his philosophy in general. By handling his trial and execution the way he did, he pretty much ensured that everything he taught would live on untarnished. He was the master of sticking to his guns.

It's amazing how Plato's philosophy is so relevant to our modern society.
Yet after 2400 years we still couldn’t reach his standard of ideal society, and probably worsen. He would facepalm so hard at how our society had became. 😂
the ancient world (before the fall of the roman empire) was extremely developed in terms of knowledge and technology, unfortunately most of the knowledge was lost trough the dark ages thanks to the barbarians that really wanted to go into roman lands.

Honestly... I love videos like these for the comments under them. It's one of the few times you could say that about youtube videos. Enlightened, polite and apologetic if things get heated. Looking on some other "entertainment" or "brainless" videos there is nothing but hate, insecurity and bile going on. Refreshing to watch something so rich, and then to see the intelligence in the comment section just makes me happy.

The only question I still keep is how pre Socrates philosophers know about atom and oneness of the Universe and who, why and how after all that amazing forgotten knowledge brought our world to such an nonspiritual perverse unethical place to be, where only wisdom is a spiritual free game of a rich white boys - philosophers :)

Who else has watched The Good Place? I was just thinking that Chidi and Eleanor’s relationship is exactly Plato’s idea of letting your lover change you. Both characters made each other a better version of themselves. Chidi made Eleanor aware of her selfishness which caused her to change and Eleanor made Chidi aware of his indecisiveness which caused him to change. At the end of the series they were both better people than they started out as. I just think that it’s a really nice touch that the writers included this type of relationship as they discussed philosophy a lot in the show.

Plato's wisdom still resonates through society nearly 2500 years later. Amazing how little times have changed. Technology and ideology might have changed, but the individual certainly has not.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves philosophy. It's kind of sad that people call it useless (like going to school to study it) when it has so many great values and things we could learn. And it doesn't make it easier to like it when you're a teenager and God forbid you like anything different or intellectual. I've found my fellow nerds.
+Ash Trancy I know. When someone says philosophy is useless, it's usually because they don't really know what it is and what it has done. Everything one does is because of philosophy, everything we have done as a race is because of philosophy.
It's especially annoying when people question why you would take philosophy. There's more to life than just math and science, and quite frankly, I prefer the arts despite growing up in a rather science and math based household. When did education stop being about learning and more about practicality? I still love to learn the theory and thought more than how to apply it.
How the heck is philosophy useless. Philosophy is the questions you ask and explore to discover the things that are beyond simplicity and rules of math and science. Personally I love philosophy, it has to be the most fascinating subject (as well as art, I just love thinking about the stories and what the art says).

Watching the part about the Socratic discussion I remembered an interview Rebecca Goldstein gave to Robert Pollie . She is the writer of the book: "Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won’t Go Away". She said that Socrates believed in "lived conversation" for very profound reasons: One of the things we have to do in order to maximise our coherence is to see the "hidden assumptions" that are so deep down in our thinking. So deep down that they're invisible to us and the only way to bring them fore is in the argumentation. She said this must be the reason why Plato wrote Soctares' thoughts in form of dialogues.
May be there is one thing that bothered me a bit in the lesson. That thought about ugliness can be dangerous. Poor Elephant Man, Quasimodo, Cyrano de Bergerac... They were all very ugly at first sight but they were such beautiful people indeed...
And may be the last thought about the philosophers being the ideal leaders. I wish it was true... But as we know "the best and the brightest" created a lot of evil too, when they got into power. Well, but may be they were not philosophically well equipped. Outside of the academia I mean. In real life. Since there are many intellectuals who aren't wise at all.

Think more is probably the opposite to popular opinion these days. People seem to think that thinking more complicates things. However, the complication doesn't arise from thinking rather just letting your mind through whatever it receives from the external world and allowing the emotions those thoughts create to take a hold of you, in many ways the exact opposite of thinking consciously. Lovely watch!
People need to learn how not to identify with thought but rather observe the thought and let it go like a leaf flowing down a river. true story that.

Figure out what exactly? Plato had a legit hardon for tyrany... he would probably not admit it, but try reading some of his ideas and then compare them to ancient Sparta (which was an oligarchy, true, but the regime was so tought and unforgiving, that it was basically a tyrany)... And his ideas smell like a stew made from fascist socks (wouldnt be surprised if Hitler was a fan of Plato). His idea was to actually ban people who were ill of body and/or mind from proper treatment, to shun them fromt the society and to ultimately dispose of them (guess what that means). He also hated fun, meaning all forms of art, poetry mainly, were supposed to follow strict rules, including not ever using themes like crying, despair or too much pleasure. So god forbid if people were actually enjoying themselves... I wish people stopped putting him on such a piedestal, as he was just an old, self loving fart with no friends, or at least he presents himself like that...

I've read the republic until I got bored of it so I might be missing some crucial details but Plato wanted an epistocratic communism with common spouses and children. Basically, entire country becomes a single family and everybody does what suits their skills. His view on medicine is very outdated though. He claimed that it just prolongs the suffering of the sick.

Philosophers of today have failed us - the top religions of the day are Communist, Corrupt religions OPENLY preaching Nazi ideas
Communist - the language communists use to describe their great, loving leader & they are so happy to live under him, the threats against others are similar to what these religions use
Corrupt - in real life if someone were to imply that you got your job not because of your hard work & qualifications, but because of your "relationship" with your boss, you would get upset and a fight might ensue
But that is the NORM in religion - Heaven cannot be Earned, the only way in is to hve a "relationship" with the top man
Nazi ideas - the Nazis made being a Jew a crime - didn't matter who they were as people, their beliefs sent them to gas chambers in hell
These religions also threaten others with the same dire consequences - "God" will reward "his" people and if you don't convert to theirs, you too will be set apart and dumped into gas chambers in hell
And they preach these ideas OPENLY!
So much for our intelligence and education and lofty morals of reading philosophy

Simple ideas from simple primitive people - it makes sense that they would make God using the most powerful man of the day - the King - men who rewarded loyalty & obedience(belief). These were not democracies, a slave/subject may not serve two kings - if you are not loyal to the king(unbeliever) there is no place for you in his kingdom
Totally understandable if these were medieval times and we lived under Kings

Philosophy is a fascinating subject. I really wish I had people with whom i can have an intellectual conversation. Thoughts exchanged with thoughts, new ideas with new ideas.

Plato was an Idealist, a common philosophy today.
He heeds good messages for how to improve your life through education and rational thought that can often seem missing in modern idealism.
Idealism is optimistic in nature, but is not optimism. Many Idealists devote a lot of time to the more negative aspects of life, helping them to grow into their ideals of making themselves, their relationships or the world a better place.
This is necessary, for an Idealist to realize their ideals they must question+investigate what's needed for them and how or even if they can actually come together.
Here's a message from me to any Idealists out there:
The simplest things matter in making improvements, even if they aren't the ideal itself.

Cliff 🤦🏻♂️ exactly! Plato wanted people to think like him before being allowed to vote. That’s some crazy philosophy right there, I could apply this to my every day life and tell everyone they are wrong if they don’t agree with me 🤪 I don’t think I’ll be met with famous philosophers sayings from random people in the street encouraging me in my own madness.

@@aviawake2763 looks like you didn't study Platone' s philosophy. He explains why his philosophy is the only "doctrine" that people should follow if you want to really understand him. Otherwise you should stop talking about things you don't know
