Didn't Lars say they had been on tour for 17 months? If so, James couldn't sing like on the album every night. After singing these songs (they always did long shows) in various conditions, several days a week will hurt your vocal chords. Specially outdoor festivals in Northern Europe. The cold wind at night is any singers worst enemy.
@haraldsletterod for sure, even at the beginning of the making of the Black album if you saw the Year and a half videos, during Sad But True recording James couldn't sing at all. Fast forward to Load/Reload if you listen to Low Man's Lyrics or Unforgiven II he's able to produce clean and crisp notes even with crescendos and all like any other accomplished singers, he must have taken lessons, also he was really into Tom Waits and Nick Cave at that time
You can tell Lars hair isn’t going to last way back then 😂

The Black album, Load and Reload are hardrock albums. Although they started as a trashmetalband, they changed over the years and became a mainstream heavymetal band.

Kirk Hammet is without doubt the worst guitar player ever to play in a decent band. How, how , how? None of his “solos” are in any kind of scale and the noise between playing notes is nothing short of total amateur.
